This is one of my favorite movies of that genre, rarely do I even meet anybody who's ever seen it.

Yeah I am a pretty big fan.. Its why I was willing to shell out 50.00 + shipping for it :lol

I don't watch it a lot but I have seen it at least 5 or 6 times over the years. I always give a pretty long break between viewings. Keeps it fresh for me.

I have to say the cover art for the regular release is bizarre, with Rourke superimposed on the bottom in some weird position. Seems a very odd choice.

They couldn't do better then that for Rourke :lol

I like the rest of it.

The Last of the Mohicans 8/10
Leon The Professional 8/10
Solo 6/10

The Deer Hunter 6.5/10

So I watched this last night. First time I have seen it since RCA video Disc

I don't know.. Its good. But there is a much better movie waiting in there.

First off.. I am pretty sure the characters in this pre war were the blue print for all annoying characters in Slasher films.. I mean just watch My Bloody Valentine or The Burning. Just loud and obnoxious people without much character.

Spend less time at the wedding. A bit more time with some normal behavior or at least some well written behavior.. I am pretty sure that all had to be improvised. Spend more time building the friendship between CW and RD.

Less time at the wedding means more time at home post war when everything was more interesting. RD coming to terms with the war. JS dealing with his injuries, CW decent into insanity.. I don't know... Anything but that Hour long into to nowhere.

Sounds like I am bashing it.. I am a little I guess. I just see the potential for a truly great film that I would revisit. Its good but just misses the mark.

No offense to the fans.. Just my take. Maybe you can open my eyes to something I missed.

I consider The Deer Hunter one of the greatest films I've ever seen; maybe top ten, almost definitely top twenty. I know lots of people complain about it being too long, and like you, they usually point to the wedding scene needing to be trimmed substantially. But I have the opposite takeaway. The wedding/celebration scene, and everything that goes with it, makes what happens later in the story more impactful for me.

By having the wedding and reception stuff go on for so long, and not really using cuts to trim away the atmosphere, it's like bringing the viewer in as if we were actual guests there for the whole thing. :lol For me, it established the bond between these characters much more richly than you could accomplish with several shorter scenes and different contexts. Watching how they celebrate, and handle the skirmish at the bar, and deal with the changes awaiting them hours away - all while getting a sense for their culture (both the Russian heritage aspect, as well as the Pittsburgh aspect) . . . it really brought the characters, their background, and their friendship to life for me more than most films accomplish. And that made all of what came after hit home that much more.

One of the films I'm wowed by the most, and if it were trimmed down (even the wedding and reception scenes) I don't think I'd feel that way because of losing out on some of the "naturalness" of the character personalities, bonds, and friendships. Guess it's all about individual preferences in terms of how we each would rather have character building be developed. Shame you don't enjoy it more for what it is, JAWS, but you're definitely being fair and insightful about it. I can see why you (and others) wish it had been different, even if I personally wouldn't change a thing.

9 out of 10 from me.

I get the fly on the wall feel from the wedding scene. I think I would like it more if I could relate in anyway to any of the characters.

They really did remind me of characters in a slasher film before the killer shows up.

I had no issue with the length.. If only the length was used better. Like spend more time at the end of the film.

Like I said I didn't hate it. Which says something about the talent involved.. But man I think the film is three scenes away from brilliant.

Film did have an impact on me though from watching it the first time. I remembered things from over 30 years ago.. Not just the classic scenes either. Scenes like RD telling the taxi driver to keep going when he saw the welcome home Michael signs and the moment when Fredo slapped his girlfriend for letting the other guy touch her ass.

My rating is reverses for DH with your Last of the Mohicans.

Never got the appeal of that film. And I am a huge DDL fan.

Ya know.. As much as I love Last of the Mohicans... I can understand someone not liking it.

I personally love the look of the film and the locations.

More then anything I love the Musical Score. It takes the film to another level for me. That is one of a few other things that this film reminds me of Conan the Barbarian :lol Excellent production design, not much dialoged, some decent action and a film score that elevates it to another level :)

I pulled a back to back triple feature last night.. Not done that in about 15 years.

Jurassic Park 9/10
The Lost World: Jurassic Park 9.5/10
Jurassic Park III 3/10

JP is still a classic. I don't love as much as I use to but the T-Rex scene alone is enough to guarantee that I will return to this film many more times in the future. Over the years I find my biggest issue is the look of the film. I cant put my finger on it. I love the T-Rex scene and how that looks but that's about it. Watched this in 4K also and the transfer was a huge step up over the old Blu ray.

The cast is good for the most part with Ian being the stand out. But here is my hot take.. I almost like TLW better

If I could combined elments of TLW with JP I would probably have a film that would easily break into my top 5 movies of all time.
I prefer the look of TLW over the first JP and think the score to TLW surpasses JPs score also. I like that Ian is the central character and love the field expert Eddie, and the big game Hunter Roland. Other then the Gymnast scene I love all the Velociraptor stuff in this one more then JP (Not counting the T-rex rescue)

My biggest issue with the film... Ian's Girlfriend Sarah and Vince Vaughn's character Nick.

Both IMO are just too stupid to live and are the real villains of the film. In fact every death in the film can be attributed to Nick and Sarah. It was Nick and Sarah who let all the Dino's out thus destroying any form of possible communication (which would lead to many deaths). It was Nick and Sarah who had to mend the baby t-Rex leg and thus got Eddie Killed because he had to rescue them from the Mama and Papa T-Rex. It was Nick who decided that the life of a Make T-Rex was more important then Roland's and sabotaged his ammo... How many died during that T-Rex Encounter when Roland could have taken out one or both of them? And then the fact had Roland just used his Ammo he would not have resorted to the tranquillizers and thus the Make T-Rex would have never been taken to SD.

"We came her to observe you came here to take... You have no Right" or something like that... Barf!!!

I guess the argument could be made that he saved lives by not allowing Dinos off the island but the thing is... At that time Ingen only had the plant eaters to take back.. Nah.. Nick you are a villain. :lol

Sarah the freaking Dino expert walking around with Baby Dino blood on her jacket after telling everyone how good the smell of the T-rex is..

Then there is all the "scientific dialogue" that Julianne Moore gives that sounds like Denise Richards talking about Nuclear science in The World is not enough. She really drive me crazy.. Sarah also angers me when she defends the Ian's child's decision to hideaway and come on a freaking Dangerous island..

Blah... I really hate those two characters.

If you could take those two out and have a better ending.. I might like this one more then JP. Because even with all my complaints I find it an easier watch then JP even though its not as good a film as JP.

JPIII - Blah... Spino looked cool. I like Alan Grant.. That's it. Movie is ****.

I agree on all points, especially the location as it was filmed in my home state, and it is quite beautiful here.

It?s was the story. Perhaps if I had seen it in the 80-90?s I would I liked it more. It just felt too much like a historical version of a Schwarzenegger film.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 6/10 - This was only my second viewing. I would have gave this film a 1/10 the first time I saw it. But after watching JPIII recently and having really low expectations this time around I found myself pleasently entertained. I could see watching this again and having the score drop down to 4 or 5 out of 10.

I like the first hour just fine and the film looks amazing on 4k.. The 2nd hour gets dumb but I really just tried to focus on the Dinosaurs and just go with it.

Its probably the dumbest of the JP films but the first hour was enough to allow me to like it more then JPIII

A slightly better acted Schwarzenegger film :lol

But yeah.. I can see it being dated for some. Its got some cringe lines in it for sure.

Is it the soundstage-y look of some of the night scenes? The "skies" and lighting feel artificial, but they give the movie a bit of retro charm IMO.

I didn't care for Fallen Kingdom the first time I saw it either but for some reason I still bought the 4K, lol. There was just something about it that was tempting me to give it another go and I'm glad I did. Yes it's by far the silliest of all JP films but I find that that fact, particularly with regard to the *second* hour (which I happen to like), give it a fun and goofy "USA Up All Night" (but with a massive budget) vibe that I find fun to watch.

I agree about Julianne Moore and Vince Vaughn in The Lost World. But I hate them so much that I could never compartmentalize them away from the rest of the film and still give it a high score. They (and to a lesser extent the gymnastics bit) literally ruin the movie for me.

Yes, LOTM is one of several 90's films that are all about the music for me. Two other big ones being Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and Dragonheart, both with themes burned into my brain from being continuously tied to epic Oscar montages for the better part of a decade, lol.

I feel like LOTM is "good" but it never really sucks me in unless it's the part where they're fleeing the fort and the one girl commits suicide off the cliff. Then I have to tune in just for the epic music, lol.

The biggest problem the Jurassic World films suffer from is that the studio has always wanted to make a dinosaurs on the mainland film. For that to happen they had to execute the park failure in JW and find a way to get the dinosaur's back to the mainland in FK.

They achieved this in 1.5 films and it's like they thought 'Oh ****! We've got the dinosaurs where we want them now but we can't make that film now as we're only halfway through this film. How do we fill the next hour of film before we can make that film?'

Bayona did some good stuff in the second part of FK, mainly with the horror aspects of the Indoraptor. Although it doesn't feel like a Jurassic film (IMO).

There's some lazy homages scattered throughout the mansion scenes too. The Brachiosaurus is the only one that works in the film.

the studio has always wanted to make a dinosaurs on the mainland film

I never understood this. Fans have been vocal about this being the weakest part of TLW since 1997. It's not like the Legendary Godzilla movies are doing well enough to indicate that's changed.
