Antlers - 6/10
It wasn't half bad actually. Some nice gloomy setting, cool practical gore and creature effects plus I have a weak spot for Keri Russell.
 
Ravenous - 9/10
I love this movie. Love the story, the setting, the characters and the allround great performances from the cast. But the thing that really elevates this movie to something special is the absolutely amazing score. That truly is a masterpiece.
 
The House of Gucci - 7/10
I watched this mainly because of the cast. Adam Driver did a good job, Lady Gaga killed it and while I'm not really a Jared Leto fan, he did a good job as well. If you didn't know it was him, you wouldn't recognise him under all that make-up. He looked very convincing.
The pace of the film felt a bit off at times, but never felt boring or too long.

Black Widow - 5/10
Florence Pugh really stole the show in this one. Apart from her and David Harbour this was just very bland and nothing special.
 
Every time I watch it I do so hoping to come to some sort of....liking of it. Afterall, I went from being highly unsatisfied by Alien 3 in its early years to freaking loving it on par with the first two nowadays. Alas I can't seem to get there with Resurrection.

Related, the theatrical cut of Aliens was on TV last night and I decided to watch it - I really really noticed the absence of the Special Edition scenes. As with Alien 3 I find the longer cut so much better.

Of course it'd probably be too long for today's audiences, isn't that right James Cameron? (I'd share his snark when it came to Aliens though)
You know I've come to appreciate Alien: Resurrection as sort it's own version of Multiverse of Madness. Sure I separate it from prior canon but I can't deny that it's fun to revisit from time to time.

As for ALIENS theatrical vs. SE I'm torn on which I prefer.

On the one hand due to ALIENS being a Top 3 all-time favorite of mine I can't help but just want "more" of it. And a lot of the SE scenes are really well done and do indeed enhance the overall feeling of a long grueling ordeal (in a good way.) But on the other hand there are some bits with really dodgy acting (the colonists, Hudson and his sharp sticks speech) plus the Sentry guns, while super cool in and of themselves, still give the characters an extra cushion of safety between them and the Xenomorph horde for a good portion of the film that wasn't there in the theatrical. At the end of the day I'm glad to have both cuts because it would be very hard for me to choose the better viewing experience.
 
I have memorized the Theatrical Aliens so well, that the SE makes it feel like the pacing is way off….

I really do not like the LV starting scene, it robs the film of the mystery of what happened and the journey with the cast to find out….

Plus is kinds stupid the first egged person was Newts dad.

See for me we're substituting that mystery for a more tangible sense of what was lost at that colony and giving added oomph to Ripley confronting Burke later about his role in the demise of all these families.

Yes, I like that they put faces to the men, women...and children that would later die horribly to give more weight to what was lost. It's juts a pity that the acting of the two guys discussing Burke's instructions was so poor. I never thought that that sequence robbed the film of any mystery, did anyone actually think that they'd travel all that way just to discover that it really was a downed transmitter. ;)

You assume correctly! I still remember the first time I saw it. It was on tv late at night, I had never heard about it, but it had Begbie and the guy from The Time Machine in it, so I decided to give it a watch. Absolutely loved it.
It was also one of the first times that I really noticed the score during the film, because it was so quirky at times. Hearing some jolly jig while one of the protagonists is being chased by a killer-cannibal with a knife was... something else. :lol

Back when this movie came out, I was working at Blockbuster Video (we had them here in Australia) casually while I was at uni. I remember the DVD range in the year 2000 was tiny, so I used to watch pretty much every new movie that came out and thankfully this was one of them.

I've been waiting for it to be released on Blu Ray or 4K here, but alas no joy. It's been quite a few years since I last watched this movie, so I'll either rent it or track it down on DVD.

I watched it on Disney+ the other day (in Europe btw). Maybe that's an option for you?

I don't know what causes it, but the discs sometimes feel a little bit sticky like there is somekind of gluey residu on it. Maybe from the print on the top side of the disc, don't know... :dunno

That's unfortunate about your DVDs - I don't have many left as I upgraded most to Blu Ray (and then 4K UHD). It seems like most things in the 21st Century, DVDs weren't built to last...

It is starting to look like that's the case. I too have done a lot of upgrading to Blu Ray, but I also still have a lot of films on DVD. Most of which I don't watch too often and didn't feel compelled to upgrade, but also some that never got a Blu Ray release here.
But, I'm not throwing them out just yet. I want to see if I can perhaps clean them or something.
 
Jersey Girl - really sweet flick
Adventures Of Tintin - ok but concerns about uncanny valley animation and the fact there was no sequel!
Sum Of All Fears - unintentional Affleck week, better than I remembered
Mission Impossible 2 - awful but better than I remembered
The Gray Man - ok, disappointing, should have been better, generic Netflix action
Venom Let The Be Carnage - truly special awful
The Wolverine - very good except the ending
X-Men The Last Stand - barely passable
 
NOPE 9/10

I went in expecting the unexpected and it did not disappoint, predictable plot did a 180 into the unknown and that's OK. lolol
Oh wow… I thought it was very meh.

I have not been that impressed with any of his work. I thought US was awful so at least this one was better for me.

I took a chance on this movie because I'm a big fan of Stranger Things ( Matarazzo is in it) and I'm a big fan of Election ( i.e. the Matthew Broderick/Reese Witherspoon/Alexander Payne film that is clearly the source inspiration of Honor Society)

This movie is both good and bad. The good is that Angourie Rice and Galen Matarazzo have real chemistry. The writing is mostly sharp for Rice's character and the dynamic between the two isn't forced

The bad is that it's horribly woke on multiple levels. Like most Netflix productions, there is some kind of open desire to take an actress in her early 20s, who looks 14, then attempts to just plainly sexualize her. I don't know why Netflix keeps doing this, but I guess it's a marketing ploy that drums up some kind of viewer demographic.

The main character, "Honor" is a legitimately bad person. But since the film is woke, she's apparently not a bad person. All men and males in the film are bad or evil or incompetent.

Payne's Election worked because it was based on an incredible book ( worth reading, released in 1998 by Tom Perrotta) But also it didn't try to wash over the flaws of anyone involved. There was an ugly pathology to Broderick's teacher character and something sociopathic about Witherspoon's iconic Tracy Flick character.

As a spoiler ahead, the biggest problem.......



Matarazzo's character Michael is portrayed as a surprise "bad guy", the problem is the actor is well recognized from Stranger Things and it's well known he has a disability/condition/special needs issue. So if you make a character the surprise bad guy, don't pick an actor who has special needs. That's just messed up.

The Michael character and the Honor character are really playing the same kind of dark ugly game with each other. Except she's virtuous because she happens to help people accidentally and he's somehow a bullied outcast yet still an evil person.

I get why both actors took the roles, they get to lead a movie and show some adult themes to drag them out of "kids movies", except this film has very little real heart in it. Given that it's marketed more to preteens and Spiderman/Stranger Things fans and a few cross over Election fans like myself, it's actually kind of insidious.

There's a good movie trapped in here, there are interesting characters here that are also trapped too. It's just soaking neck deep in woke.

It's like Andrea Dworkin decided to rewrite The Impossible Now while on a bender.

Also I'm starting to have misgivings that Netflix is being run by basically pedophiles. Millions of subscribers have already left. Is it needed to sexualize either preteens or girls who look like they are preteens to sell a film?

Interesting enough, something like 500 Days Of Summer or Netflix's own Candy Jar ( 2018) are better examples of respecting the characters. Key to note, the male lead is Candy Jar is black, so maybe that's the only reason why he wasn't painted as a villain.

We all get it Hollywood - You want everyone to believe all men are evil. Just evil. Unless they are hot and have no flaws like McDreamy. LOL. This is what happens when you let an entire industry be overrun with woke wealthy college grads turned into writers who totally despise anything anyone has ever loved before in their childhood.

I'm tired of identity politics being force fed into what amounts to propaganda aimed at teens. Just tell a good story for the sake of telling a good story. Then again I watched Rocky 4 in theaters and I was enthralled by the jingoism.

Angourie Rice and Gaten Matarazzo do a more than credible job with what they are given in the script. The film should have just focused on the two of them without all the side stories. McLovin has what amounts to an extended cameo to hope to get the SuperBad crowd involved.

This is not a bad film. It's got the core building blocks of a good film somewhere deep inside. Of course the bizarre thing is it's about kids wanting to go to college, and it's unclear who can afford that anymore. LOL. One of the worst things about Hollywood is how you have rich influential people making films on their best guess on how the working class actually lives. They just throw a dart and imagine a life living check to check.
 
Wrong Turn (2021) - 4/10
I was expecting the mutant inbreds, but they took a different turn (pun intended) with this one. The problem was that the protagonists were a real bunch of d-bags. Therefore I didn't care about any of them surviving, so that kinda takes away the thrill of a survival horror film.
