I'm lazy, it's a known fact but just a question for you peeps that have seen this....what caused the destruction of the world? Was it a religious apocalypse or nuclear or what? They may have said in the movie but if they did I completely missed it. Maybe they never said what it was?!?!?!
Man been awhile....let's see.

There was no reason given for the destruction. Just seemed to me this was the apololypse and end of days for the human race. It was more about the survival of the father/son and how far would you go to keep him alive and is it even worth it. The cause of it was unnneeded as it wasnt what the story was necessarilly about.

I didn't mean to imply I thought the film was based solely around the apocalypse. I just wondered if I missed what caused it whether it was in the movie or the book?
The destruction was never explicitly explained in either the movie or the book. It could be deduced that the destruction was nuclear in nature, as it was specifically mentioned that the clocks stopped at a certain time (I can't remember) and all electronic devices ceased working, which would be indicative of an electromagnetic pulse casued by a nuclear device. In addition, the change in climate could be attributed to a nuclear winter as well.
That's kind of how I took it too, nuclear that is. The reason I mostly asked was as I thought about this movie and what I would do in that situation it changes my view point based on the reason behind the destruction.
If it was man made, nuclear or what have you, then I suppose I would try to do what Viggo's character did and keep my family alive based on my personal beliefs.
If it was god made/ biblical then I guess I might either kill myself instead of struggling or something of that nature. I mean if the BIG man decided to end the human race I might not see the worry in committing a sin and taking my own life. Or maybe you should still die naturally and be allowed to enter the pearly gates if that's where the human race went.
Just some thoughts but that's what I liked about this film, it sticks with you for a couple of days.

Jonah Hex - 5.5/10
Goodfellas 10/10
Not the best Scorsese movie but it still gets a 10 from me. But god I hate Ray Liotta's laugh. Hate it so much it almost made me want to dock off a point.
