Star Trek - 6/10

Just...it has a lot of annoyances. Some big (Vulcan destroyed by time traveller? Simples, use time travel again to reverse what he did, like Star Trek has always done - why can't it be done here? Especially when old Spock is the one who pioneered the slingshot around the sun method in IV), some small (Lens flare. And why are phasers now little lazer blobs instead of the continuous and more realistic lines of light that they used to be?).

Its not that I have a problem with the alternate reality thing - in fact I think it'll be great fun - its just that it doesn't make sense in the context of the Star Trek universe. These things have always been reversible before, theres no reason this wouldn't be. Theres especially no reason that old spock wouldn't use time travel to save his own planet when he used it to save Earth in Star Trek IV.

It's a summer action movie. Stop trying to over think it.

Stop trying to justify valid critiques with the fact that it's a summer action movie. Bayformers were summer action flicks, still didn't change the fact that they sucked. :dunno

A film is a film is a film is a film. Someone paid money to have it made and someone else paid money to see it. No labels can make up for that.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched.

It's still a summer action movie. A summer action movie, is a summer action movie, is a summer action movie.

They aren't "films". They're movies. Star Trek was a fun movie. Not a thinking movie. Enjoy the green tits, and explosions!

Why pay for those when you can get them for free elsewhere? :naughty

Just saying, not everyone is willing to pay money just for an excuse to turn their mind off. Look at Piranha 3D, for instance; it was obviously a stupidity fest and it even failed there.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched.

Uh, no it didn't. You're completely wrong. It new exactly what it was, and what it was going for.

It actually did very well, critics wise.

Don't believe me?

By the way, you don't have to turn your brain off, but you shouldn't go into a summer movie expecting something it's not going to be. It's meant to be entertaining. If that's not entertaining to you, fine. But relax, and enjoy it. Star Trek isn't even a dumb movie any way...it's just not the original Star Trek.

It's like going into The Grey, and expecting Taken. :lol

Huh. I was judging based on the critic reviews on Yahoo Movies (plus the user reviews from both sides are abysmal). Typically users have more-valid inputs when it comes to nichey stuff like this, but whatevs. Your comment about Star Trek not being the original does ring true.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched.

I mean, here's the thing. Yes. The Transformers movies are crap. Yes, I love them with all my heart. They aren't for everyone. They're made for children. I like the effects.

However, if you go in, and expect something...well, good out of them, well that's my issue. And it's my issue with every other Summer movie.

They're made(summer movies) to be fun fluffy flicks to entertain and make money. Sometimes you'll get the gem like District 9, which has a ton of creativity, and class to it...but for the most part, Summer Movies exist as an event. Not a time to watch high class movies.

As for Piranha, people didn't get it, and I feel sorry for them. It's a comedy. It's meant to be funny. You were never supposed to take it seriously.

The Woman in Black - 6/10
Chronicle- 7/10 (way over-hyped)

Also, I view motion pictures in two categories - movies and films. Star Trek is a movie. The Tree of Life is a film. I curb my expectations likewise. Makes watching them much easier.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched.

Yep. Star Trek does not bring in money these days.

Plus, they've been doing this action crap for every one of those dumb TNG movies my dad dragged me too.

Now it finally worked.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - 8.5/10
Seeing all the Anchorman sigs back on the board again made me want to watch the film :lol
Hadn't seen it in quite a while. Great fun! :rock

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched.

Ingo,
Great sig there. Looking forward to the movie on release day. :yess:

Godzilla (Gojira) Criterion Collection on blu ray. 9/10.

Easily the best of the Big G's movies. Created and told by a culture that experienced the affects of nuclear testing and fallout first hand.
This was the most fierce Godzilla Toho created. Every G movie afterwards can't even compare, including the ridiculous made-for-America version with Raymond Burr.

True, but Spock was the one who did it and probably at that point can't really reveal himself to everyone and maybe the tech of that time made it so it was not possible to do the whole "slingshot around the sun" technique... not to mention that would probably have been even worse :lol And whose to say they didn't try it... but lo and behold they were not successful in the past and Vulcan was still destroyed :huh

But past all of that... I actually enjoyed the sucker punch of destroying Vulcan, it puts a very unique stamp on the new movie Universe and allows not only all new stories to happen, but gives Spock more latitude to explore his human side.

Re: Rate The Last Movie You Watched.

Drive: 9 / 10. Bought this as a blind buy the day it was released on Blu-Ray, and watched it that same night. Wondering if it could meet the hype, and it did, but in an entirely different way than expected. Very deliberate pacing. I really dug the retro 80's music as well as the 80's pink cursive font during the opening credits. If only the movie makers had the balls to keep the same pink cursive font on their advertising materials for this film.
