They were obviously trying to capture the Gladiator magic, although I was glad there was a love story here too. I thought more of Robin & Marian rather than any other Robin Hood movie. As an origin story it was interesting and a new take on the myth which we really haven't seen in film form before. The big battle scenes were well done and the performances were decent all around (except for John - I know villains are supposed to be over the top - but Yikes!).

Well, I have to say I don't know what movie some of you watched, but I saw a damn good movie. 8/10 for me. I hope they make a second one. It's certainly set up for it.

Thought it was okay, Had some pretty decent action scenes. 7/10

watched it last friday.

the biggest issue i had with the film was the battle sequence at the end. i thought it was totally out of place and unnecessary. ironic, considering that initially i was worried there wouldn't be enough action stuff. as it turns out the character stuff was far more justified being in the film than that battle scene.

why? ok, let's break it down... this story is essentially about the revolt against taxation. enter robin who defies king john by giving back to the poor. yet they inexplicably made this ALSO about a story of "freedom" and "unity", where the english had to collectively fend off the invading french forces. the only reason i can think of as to why they added this layer was to justify a huge battle scene at the end. to me, it felt completely at odds with the main thrust of robin's character motivation---which is basically to stand up for the common man, against the tyranny of govt oppression. NOT be a nationalistic, pseudo-braveheart.

it kinda ruined the attempt at telling a decent origin story by changing tack so needlessly.

having said that, i really liked certain elements of the film: the production design was top notch as usual for a ridley scott film, max von sydow & mark strong's performances, and the chemistry between the merry men---they were among the few recognisable parts of the established robin hood universe. whenever they were on-screen, the film just got more entertaining (and funny).

overall, nowhere near as bad as many reviews have made it out to be. but still a missed opportunity, considering all the talent and budget involved.

It's an origin story, and obviously, the last few scenes established the rogue-ish characteristics of the Robin Hood character that could be explored in the future. I think the battle scene at the end is completely justified, given how it is set up throughout the progress of the film. And to support that point, one of the characters (John Hurt's character) exists pretty much solely as a source of exposition for the audience. He's a pretty flat character otherwise when he's not talking about the looming French oppressors.

The battle at the end was to set up how much the new King was a liar and would go back to his tax heavy ways. He made promises he didn't keep.

Well if there is a sequel, maybe this movie will feel more justified to me, but at the moment it feels like I just saw a 2 1/2 hour set up to the film I wanted to see.

Watch Prince of Thieves now.

:D

Haha that is what I did. I still think that is the best Robin Hood story told on film. Even though Costner's acting was pretty terrible I loved the movie all around. Second would go to the BBC version of Robin Hood, then a tie between the Disney cartoon and this Robin Hood. Lastly probably that old ass Robin Hood TV show.

First for me would be Prince of Thieves, then Robin Hood (with Errol Flynn), then the new one. After that, how can you forget this one.......

For me it would be
Errol Flynn's Robin Hood
Robin of Sherwood
Yes it looks old now, but it was and still is a great show

Robin and Marian
Disney's Robin Hood
And then Prince of thieves

Is Prince of Thieves really that good? It looks to much like a love story to me...

Don't let the Brian Adams song fool you, there is a lot more going on than a simple love story. Good movie. I dunno if it's great, but I enjoy it.

Well I'm expecting an origin story, not the story of Robin of Loxley so maybe I'll like it. :dunno

It's the title that gets me. It sounds like one of those grocery store romance novels.
