just got back from a midnight showing and it was really good. great story and the fx are very believable. you really do feel for the apes.

Oh man, I just got back from Rise of the Apes and boy is it good. I'm not even a huge "Apes" fan, I've only seen the original and a few others, but this just blew me away. I've been having some great experiences with films this summer from movies I care little about, or thought I'd care little about. Captain America was superb, and this was just really well done.

A few points that I absolutely loved (spoilers ahead),

- Everything about Andy Serkis as Caesar. Especially following the character from infancy to adulthood. Dare I say one of the best CGI characters? Avatar what? Pfft.
- Hints about the Mars Shuttle being lost in space (obviously setting up a sequel with a similar Charlton Heston pilot character
- The Charlton Heston nod
- Caesar's first word and reaction after being called a "damn dirty ape". So good.
- The credits scene. I didn't expect it. I got up from my seat, went down the steps and as soon as the new scene popped up, I quickly sat in the nearest seat, surprised.
- Final battle on the Golden Gate bridge

I could go on and on. All the little nods to the original, as well as the fresh new plot was very well done. I really enjoyed this.

Everything points to a promising sequel.

Did Freida Pinto do a good job?

Kind of, she really wasn't in it that much. She was really just a voice of reason throughout, which isn't a bad thing I guess. There's a nice little sign language scene with Franco and Caesar about her that I originally thought was meant to be dirty, but it wasn't.

I expected the film to be more about the human characters but nope, the film is really about Caesar. He carries the whole film.

Saw this earlier today. Amazing!!! Acting was very good and the cgi was great.

Good film.
It's not the "jump outta your seat in excitement" kind....but it's light years ahead of the horrid costume show Burton foisted on us a few years back. It's strength is telling a great new story while staying true to it's "roots". It manages to present a fresh approach to this "Apes" saga, while still fitting in.
The cg work is pretty amazing....it's definitely Serkis' (Caesar's) movie through and through.

There are some inspired scenes here...among them,
That wonderful montage in Muir Woods as Caesar runs and climbs free, again and again...the rain of leaves as the apes tear through the suburbs above the trees....climbing up and and under the Golden Gate with dizzying effect....

The human cast is serviceable, with Franco sadly being the weakest here...he just doesn't seem that into it...but thankfully the main focus is rightly on the apes.

I also liked the end coda....very clever wrap up and possible "what next".

I hope this does well enough to allow Wyatt the opportunity to do the next chapter for this...after this "Rise" I want to see what's next...

This is one of the best directed films i've seen all year.

Not to mention the ending was genius. Takes out a huge leap of faith...ands something far more terrifying, and believable.

I loved this movie, very well directed and a great start to a fantastic serie's I hope they do more. I Really liked how at the end he looks out into the world. I really hope we see sequal's and i'm pretty sure we will see that ugly one eyed ape again.

I was going in completely oft put by this. I just didn't really care at all about this even though I had heard great buzz on the original script-treatment called Caesar that had been written I think nearly two years ago. It had gone through re-writes and the buzz was mediocre to favorable for the script that they shot with. Somewhere along the line I just lost interest--maybe it was the trailers that just made it seem totally ho-hum. I went to the 10:15pm show tonight not knowing what to expect though I heard good things.

Boy was I surprised. No, let me take that back. BOY WAS I WRONG! Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a damn near perfect and just a phenomenal piece of cinema that makes a great and awesome partner to the original Planet of the Apes penned by Rod Serling. The original is a biting satire, totally cynical and a devastating indictment of modern human civilization. It is landmark science fiction. Well, Rise of the Planet Apes goes all out and wants to reach for the same heights as the original though in a different fashion. Rise is a good old fashion Frankenstein story applied to rebooting the Apes' franchise and let me tell it works and works solidly. This is a story that totally embodies that age old adage that "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions." And boy, oh boy is it. In this world, a near future Earth (not at all on the verge of nuclear annihilation it seems as in the other Apes' films) sees genetic engineering used as a tool to cure Alzheimer's as used by scientist Will Rodman (James Franco showing why he's one of the best) to cure his ailing and once gifted father, Charles (played superbly by John Lithgow). In a nutshell, the chimps are being experimented on and one of the offspring of that experimentation is Caesar. Andy Serkis' performance is absolutely mind blowing. He not only becomes Caesar, he is Caesar. Hell, Caesar is REAL and everything we see and experience as he takes his journey is beyond words. Thank you Serkis and Weta for doing the impossible once again. I was brought to so many levels of emotion from his performance as Caesar and Weta's creation of Caesar that I am literally shocked at how it could be done. I'm without words here. I am not going to reveal anymore of the plot just know that one of my biggest reservations about this story was how the Hell could the Apes takeover when we've got all the guns? Well, trust me. You'll see how they could. It is answered perfectly and is a sledgehammer right to the skull. Tinkering with things better left alone is all I'm going to say. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of the best films I've seen this year and for me it gets a 10/10.

Could not agree more. Everything you listed as spoilers makes the possibility of a sequel so damn intriguing with what could be done. And remember, the
the Mars Mission was named Icarus too just like in the original POTA
. The way in which the Apes will eventually inherit the Earth is truly, truly believable if not absolutely disturbing because it is so rooted in reality. Forget nuclear annihilation, this is a 100 times more pressing in what could happen in the real world..

We still have to wait until next week for this in the UK, but i'm getting really excited for this now having read the last few pages it seems everyone who has seen it has enjoyed it.

Really? I thought the cast was great and I thought Franco did a very good job.

Maybe a second viewing might change my mind, but he just seemed...almost distracted/disinterested as the movie went on. Perhaps it could have been the contrast of his role against the apes (who were all really well-realized and amazing).

It was Caesar's story after all....
