Just like Titanic got backlash, TDK will as well. But in the end it doesn't matter. Both are good movies and made bank.

I can understand why TDK gets called pretentious. It attempts to make more out of what should be just a straightforward comicbook movie into something a little more - whether it's an exploration of chaos vs. order, or the lengths we have to go to feel safe from crime (terror) or a more introspective examination of diverse characters, I can definitely see some thinking it's "pretentious" just as Ang Lee's Hulk was labeled the same.

However I think Lee's Hulk had to stretch to incorporate the bigger themes into a "comic book" movie, TDK does it naturally with the themes being inextricably tied into the plot and characters.

I really enjoyed Iron Man and Incredible Hulk, Iron Man moreso. And I think Favreau can direct an action scene better than Nolan. But I do think that TDK is a better movie, whereas Iron Man may be a better targeted "comic book" movie.

Agreed with pretentious part. Kevin Smith can be accused of the same. But thats part of what I like about Nolan. He chooses to put layers in his films, that if you choose to you get something a little more than the action. I don't think it should have been a straightforward comic book movie though. Batman comics (the best ones) are always about something more than just the general plot of the book.

I also think Nolan missed a little with the fighting scenes, not action in general. The chase sequence was jaw dropping, but I just didn't feel the strengths Batman's new suit offered. It was mentioned he's too slow in the old suit, but the new suit didn't show him fighting any differently. I personally liked the way the fight scenes were filmed in Begins, the way he would go in, fight so fast we couldn't see exactly what he was doing, then see the result. I loved the whole"striking from the shadows".

TDK we just see him punch a bunch of guys, but the drama was missing IMO. Favreau did pull off most of the actions scenes better, but I still didn't feel any dramatic weight to the scenes. What he had in his favor was the action scenes I think were more "fun".

So to conclude, both films are awesome for what they individually set out to: ENTERTAIN US!!!!!

Can't put it any better myself.

What strikes me as a little odd though is that Comic Book Readers would critizise that aspect of the movie.
Last year I started reading Marvel via their Digital Subscription. I read a bunch of different individual storylines like Rogue/Gambit, some of the older Avengers issues and the complete Civil War event including all spin-offs.
After that I cancelled the subscription, I just couldn't stand this huge morality thing they were building up consistently.
I was more than happy to see that they dropped that scheme for the IM movie, but it wasn't quite true to the original. If anything is pretentious, it's the Comics themselves.

I dont know how well a label "comic book movie" is for Batman anymore. Yes, its rooted from comic books - however, by todays standards it has become so much more. We've had several TV series, several movies by now... video games, its all there. These are the things that morphed and molded Batman into what it is today.

Movies like Iron Man have very little to base themselves off of besides the original comics. As stated - IM makes a great "comic book movie". In fact, I would say the best to date. I just consider Batman too much of something else to fall in the same category. I'll just go with "super hero movie"...

BTW - I am a HUGE fan of TDK - in case thats unclear...

He is Robert Downey Jr. and he is keeping it real, that´s why he plays a white guy playing a black guy in a movie with Ben Stiller.

My friend is living in one of his old places in Huntington Beach. Robert Downey lost the place when he went to prison in Corcoran.

If any comic book movie has been over rated I think its Iron Man. Dont get me wrong I enjoyed it but it doesnt warrant the praise its received. I think TDK is just head and shoulders above it or any other comic book movie. Oh and I thought RDJ had already kicked his bad habbits chug:chug

The Incredible Hulk was surprisingly entertaining for me. I admit that I went in with lowered expectations, but they pulled off a really good movie that doesn't really reboot the franchise, but isn't a sequel to the previous movie either.

I liked how it kinda worked as a loose sequel to both the 2003 film, and the 1978 series, but it was still its own unique take.

Your gonna hear it from the IM Nuthugggers now!!!!

Not really, I think. I'm a huge IM fanboy and don't really fight those who dislike it, I really don't see too many of us running to defend their film against those who dislike it actually...this isn't a TDK or Star Wars thread. The fun thing is I loved Iron Man, best comic origin film I've ever seen and if disagree with me the good thing is I don't give a ^^^^.

:lol

And I think Favreau can direct an action scene better than Nolan.

I think Nolan has a very Cameron-esque style when directing vehicle chases. Particularly the first Tumbler chase in BB. The front flipping semi in TDK had the same "wow!" factor to me as the first time I saw the slow motion bridge explosion in True Lies.
