Can't say Star Wars OT was not the genius of Lucas
And then blame him alone for the crappy PT.
Cannot have it both ways.
I believe he captured lightning 3 times with OT and his original created universe, with the combined talent of many working with him to create said universe (MCQuarrie, William, Kadsen, etc etc)
And later captured crap in a bottle for the same reason.....in that case he surrounded himself with yes men and fan boys who did not promote their own thoughts to the mighty overlord. The trappings of sucess.
Im regard to RO, most films are shot in such a way as to make MaJOR changes if needed.....if you look carefully some serious dialogue is added while the actors head is not seen. Its an old studio trick, that is used all the time. (I got family in the business, which is how I got to meet most of the OT cast)
One famous one I can mention is (fact from the actor himself) is in Alien Nation. They wanted the main character and his sidekick to bond more so the added a line in about him losing his best friend to a drug epidemic, to parallel the cop losing his partner fighting the drug war. Its very obvious in that film its dubbed in, because it was done much later on a different sound stage and it sounds weird. Today they still employ this technique all the time. If I recall there is a few in T2 as well.
RO was shot with alot of possible story lines to be added or subtracted. The reshoots were likely to enhance one possible line of story they ended up liking more that another. It rare today to have a script and shoot it ad nasuem, without tweaking it along the way.
But in the end the director usually makes this call....so,etime due to studio pressure....sometime not.
