Yep, that's my take. Especially with the broadcast tower being directly above the vault, I think it just made much more sense to them at that point to just beam the plans up rather that risk fighting their way out of the complex, running across the beach, flying a ship through TIE squadrons (basically doing everything that the first teaser showed :lol.)

Also their original plan of escaping by ship was under the assumption that there'd be no rebel fleet to beam them to in the first place.

After they sent the plans they only had to discreetly make their escape with much less urgency...until they saw the approaching blast wave.

Which gave some real poignancy to the ending. If this weren't a prequel to a pre-existing story you would expect Jyn and Cassian to be the ones who go on to actually destroy the Death Star. Instead they die, never knowing if their sacrifice will actually be worth it.

. . .unless they somehow could see further to the time of tfa, when another death star was created killing billions, and the empire survived despite what happened in the original films, essentially negating everything that happened in them.

*Obi-wan voice* That is the reason why TFA remains safely non-canon

Yep. Her only comfort was her belief that their efforts weren't in vain and that "your father would be very proud." :monkey2

EXACTLY!!!!! No one seems to be baffled by that- !!! :slapThe Empire lived on anyhow and became even bigger and badder- so much for the old Rebellion!

Great posts by Khev, a-dev and kara, love reading stuff like that.

I also love that Disney grew some balls and didn't go with them escaping and approved them being obliterated instead.

Tarkin is now that much nastier and Vader is now that much more bad ass in SW.

What's even more poignant is that they died and then were just forgotten as another casualty of war.

Not even a proper ceremony in SW to honor their very successfull sacrifices.

I think QuiGon and Padme are the only 2 characters in all of the 8 movies who were shown having funeral services.

Han's death was as forgotten as Jyn and Cassian, damn.

No kidding. The Rebels really are kind of hardcore if you think about it. Alderaan, Old Ben, all X-Wing pilots, Han, Jyn, Cassian, Admiral Raddus, etc. They absolutely do NOT mourn their dead. They're like Patrick Swayze in Red Dawn. "You just take that grief, and turn it to something else!"

When Jyn was crying over her dead father Cassian was all "Nope, we don't do that."

Excuse me...I have something in my eye. :monkey2

Makes you wonder who the real bad guys are. All the empire wants to do is provide the rule of law, security, and order. And those terrorists always seem drawn to conflict and death. SAD!

All Palpatine ever wanted was for the galaxy to win so much that they were going to be sick of winning.

:lol :lol :lol

I think I would have preferred the real actress instead of the CGI. As good (acceptable?) as Tarkin was, Leia was...questionable.
