I think I would have preferred the real actress instead of the CGI. As good (acceptable?) as Tarkin was, Leia was...questionable.

I thought Leia's profile was perfect but yeah, the likeness slipped when she turned and faced the camera. I probably wouldn't have minded so much if it weren't for the freaking PERFECT young RDJ we just saw in CW.

I do find that the CGI plays a little better on a smaller screen at home though, even to the point where I almost wondered if they tweaked it a bit after the theatrical release.

Yeah, should have just used the actor and actress portraying Tarkin and Leia.

It doesn't bother me that it's not 100% - the OT and PT are full of effects that aren't great.

Yep and the effects are noticeable but not in a way that disconnects the film from what came before IMO. They might not have nailed the visuals but at least the characters are still unmistakably Cushing Tarkin and Fisher Leia which goes a long way.

I would actually adjust my post a bit as it reads like I'm saying the Rogue One Tarkin and young Leia effects aren't great - I actually think they're very impressive - it's just that my eyes are still seeing something off that I cannot even understand or articulate. But they are surely close. The OT SE/BluRay CGI and the PT CGI is more what I would call truly horrendous in parts.

Yeah, I would have just recast them like they did the woman who runs the military command room or whatever. The RDJ moment in Civil War is frankly the best I've seen anywhere, but both of the Rogue One ones fell into uncanny valley territory for me.

I agree with this. I just finished watching it on a small screen, and to me the Leia CGI looked fine.

How does Leia go from this to this,
