But I still don't think setting a movie during the Empire qualifies as fan service, and with that you should get all the things they're describing as fan service -- x-wings, TIE fighters, etc, etc. For anyone who watched the OT, Star Wars is Rebels vs the Empire with bounty hunters and aliens mixed in.

I was thinking about this the other day, but I think it actually would have made more sense if the Empire were already around in the prequels. Not sure what the clone wars would have looked like, but one of Star Wars' great issues between the prequels and the OT is the time line of the Empire, it's so short, (starts at the end of ROTS and is effectively done at end of ROTJ), yet Kenobi in ANH makes it sound like they've been living under the foot of the Empire for so long.

Well there are a ton of things that should've been done differently with the PT but they're not even worth discussing anymore.

No PT reviews will ever be better than what RLM created.

But to complain of OT fan service in a movie set a few days before the ANH opening is just desperation on their part.

R1 would have been perfect for me if Wedge was in it. I love Wedge and am still waiting for ssc to make a premium format of him lol.

Yeah it would have been fun to geek out at seeing him again. And as a side note it seems that Denis Lawson might be having second thoughts about passing on TFA after seeing how good that movie plus Rogue One were. I kind of got the impression that he had happily distanced himself from SW (especially after his nephew Ewan's experience making the prequels) and I wondered if he would be aloof even at Celebration but he was energetic, talkative, and even came across as somewhat enthusiastic. For my part I told him that he was missed in The Force Awakens so who knows, maybe him having fun at the con and liking the new movies will cause him to reappear in TLJ or Episode 9.

But getting back to RO I definitely think they had a fine line to tread in bringing back original X-Wing pilots while not having the whole battle come across as "Archival Footage Theater." We can always pretend that Biggs, Porkins, and some of the others were in the battle but just didn't have lines on camera. They did state that they specifically excluded Wedge since the Death Star shows up at the end and his "look at the size of that thing" line in ANH is supposed to be his first ever glimpse of it.

Yeah it's funny that the PT makes the "Dark Times" Ben is referring to not even as old as the young boy he's telling the story to. But I guess that's consistent with the PT making literally every single one of Ben's OT lines a lie of some kind.

That's an interesting point brought up that I've never actually thought of.

So the Empire is around for what? 19 years when we meet Luke?

ROTJ takes place around 5 years after that?

So the Empire was really only around for 25 years or so? (well at least that's what were lead to believe.)

I wonder if the new Battlefront game we're getting fills in the gaps of the Empire.

Yeah, that first print is missing troopers.

Should have had a clone trooper in the prequel era, a stormtrooper in the OT era and a First order trooper in the sequel era.

Also, where is Tarkin, Jar Jar and Krennic.

Nazi Germany: 1933 – 1945 (12 years)

I think 25 years is quite enough. :lol

And to be fair to the prequels the OT did always imply that the Jedi purge/birth of the Empire happened pretty close to when the twins would have been hidden. I never got the impression that Anakin turned to the Dark Side at age 20, lived as a Sith for 20 years, THEN conceived Luke and Leia so that Ben could somehow come out of hiding to whisk them away. It always made sense that everything happened pretty close to each other in that regard.

You know what though I liked it that RO had some troopers go out in semi lame ways with just stick strikes from Churrut to their helmets just like with the Ewoks.

There were some that died or were knocked unconscious just by being thrown around by K2!

They seem to be made to suffer such embarrassment, it's their lot in life.

Totally! :rotfl

You'd think they were orderlies at Pescadero State Hospital or something.

Hey, Anakin was a great pilot!

Yeah he even almost finished a race once, or something.
