We keep going on about Buu being one release, but come on folks lets be honest here, what figuarts has EVER had a replaceable torso? Heads are fine but torsos are where the majority of the inner workings are, thats where most of the money is spent making the thing. Its just unreasonable to assume they would do something like that to save US money :lol
Actually, they have released something with 2 torsos. Michael Jackson had a detachable torso if that counts for something.

Why do you all think they changed the prototype to the one with the "sleeve-like" mid-deltoid?

They went back with this design for SSJ3 Goku, and I remember the prototype of the base form Goku had the better shoulder but they ended up going with the weird one instead! Especially odd because it shows here on the original prototype that they had the rounded shoulder ready to go!

I wonder if they had problems with the better looking shoulder joint? btw, they totally should have included a happy face with SS Goku - it's so odd that he only has a stern face when his prototype showed a happy one too

This might have been a licensor issue.

Oftentimes I hear that the licensor requests (whoever approves Dragon Ball merchandise for Toriyama) are odd-ball like color changes, expressions, "make it taller/shorter" etc. For example, I talked to Sideshow at SDCC 2014 about their 12" Batman figure and specifically asked them about working with DC comics and what sort of changes do they ask for. For Batman, they said DC wanted them to adjust the blue on the suit when they showed them the initial prototype.

However, I hear Bandai has almost full authority over their own Dragon Ball merchandise so I don't know who "approves" things for them.

When the licensor saw the smiling SSj Goku prototype face, this was their response

Guys, be careful when rotating broly's hands. The paint from his bracelets may come off.

An eraser can solve the issue if the problem just happened. But if you take too much time to clean it, you will have trouble trying to remove it.

That's strange. As the proto looks better even during unpainted stage:lol

I hope they remake a 2.0 goku soon as the old one is pretty outdated now compared to the other newer releases.

I find it similar to Vegeta. The unpainted prototype looked amazing...

The painted prototype looks beautiful...

The final product loses all of that depth and detail... (Which mostly happens to all of them.)

They at least fixed the paint for Scouter Vegeta.

I believe you answered your own question...

Tamashii creates a prototype, sends it to Toei for approval, Toei makes a few changes before their approval, Tamashii makes those changes to receive that approval and starts the production.

I got my bootleg SS3 Goku figure in the mail after work yesterday, here's my review with a few pics:

The figure itself is pathetic in terms of quality mainly because of the shoddy joints and the somehow-even-worse-than-the-original paintjob. The effects and stand seem pretty solid but I haven't really messed with them yet. I am positive that this wasn't done by datong. The dead give away for me was that the stand itself says Bandai on it. None of the datong stands that came with Vegeta, that blue dragon effect or the Saint Seiya effects set had the Bandai name on them but the originals do. The instructions, as the video review posted earlier mentions, are an exact copy of the original instructions much like the box. Datong changes the text to (what appears to be?) Chinese and removes Bandai and Figuarts entirely.

.

The one I got looks like it has guyliner on the stern face. The clenched teeth have the same dark outline around them on his alternate face and one eye is missing some white paint. The legs were put on backwards but flipped so the butt was on the front. His arms were also backwards with the hands on the wrong sides. When I popped one hand off to switch it, half of the connecting joint came with it. It wasn't broken, just excessively loose. His sleeves are rubbery which I kind of like, but don't sit well on the shoulders. The arms are almost the skin tone of an Oompa Loompa. The piece that connects his "toes" to his foot was left unpainted and is red. It's also like they tried to match the official gi colors but it came out noticeably worse. Can someone explain WTF is with the black above his blue undershirt?

In the end if you can fix the overly loose joints and repaint it or use the parts for a custom, the price is ok at $35 with the stand and effects. I honestly would not even consider suggesting it for a stand in for the real one unless you have some customizing skill and time or you just want to leave it in the box. Not only does it not stand up with out a stand, but the head and limbs fall limp in most poses... I don't think I'll be getting another unless the price drops and I suddenly have the time to put into making a Radditz custom.

The seller obviously has no clue man. Its funny, goodcommander was selling the XC ssj Goku too, and that was a dead ringer box-wise for the real thing. I would say XC are making the Goku tbh. Datongs quality may have dipped with scouter Vegeta but they have never swayed from the restyling of packages etc.

That's the guy I usually go thru for Datong stuff. Either he is clueless or just trying to make a sale. I don't think the scouter Vegeta is any worse than the SS Vegeta datong made. Maybe I just got some from a decent batch?

Decent batch. Mine was so badly painted a kid could have done better :lol

He sells the jacksdo stuff to iirc, but when he got the XC Goku in I believe he called it datong aswell.

I know he had the Trunks head when it came out. I think I saw those display stages by Jacksdo in his store on AliExpress, too.
