Looks to me like you had 4 times the amount of "some". :D

I know there are more variables than meets the eye, but in theory, if I were to look/ask for someone to repaint this, what would be a reasonable price range to expect?

In example, how much would have charged someone to do what you did to yours, to theirs?

Lol. A pro like JV would no doubt charge more than a no name artist. If one can make a sketch that takes an hour for say $200 how much would one charge if a piece took 10,20 or 30 man hours? This repaint is not a quick one and I should know... Something that has to be under consideration here. Plus this IMHO should be painted by hand no airbrush. So far the main difference by judging the helms is while mine has a dirty look to it JVs has a even dirtier look. More dry brushing the dirtier something looks. I am curious to exact technique, paints used, etc. I was even contemplating using a very lightly damp cloth too rub the dry brushing to help create a little different dirty effect. I did a lot of rubbing and smearing with my fingers for some areas

I have no clue what a painter would charge for a full paint job. Anyone that makes a go at it, will have different techniques depending on their skill level. If you know what you are doing, an airbrush can be used. I did :)
I'm just having fun, more than anything else.

True, totally forgot to just think of the basic of what would be charged an hour in general from their work. Will def, take that into consideration.:slap

Just having fun, eh? Want to have twice as much fun and repaint mine? :pfft:

I have had two pieces repainted by a pro, both 1:6 scale with lots of armor. The guy painting them though was a knockout pro. Subtracting the cost of the normal statue I paid about 1k and 1.2k for each paint job.

Although large the Sauron to me is a pretty simple paint job. Still I would expect over 1k for anything decent.

I know a custom paint job for a 19 inch Sano alien was quoted in the 3-4k range.

Part of the cost is convincing someone to do it. Most artists don't really want to do this kind of work for others. I know of only a few that are for hire that are very good.

I did some painting for hire back in the day, this was mini scale stuff for Warhammer armies. The issue is always the drive, who wants to spend hours upon hours doing something for someone else. For Sauron, I do think you can practice, hone the technique and then go big. I would love a busted head or something to practice on. I really don't think this is a hard job, nothing like flesh tones on a human or something like that. For my custom paint jobs the painter was matching to a 2D painting which painted things rather odd colors but it worked in aggregate. For example, Frazetta's death dealer has quite a bit of blue and purple in the color of the horse and it takes someone with mad skill to pull off that same color palette on a 2D statue. Here's the result.

Transition of color to blend in like that is practice . The horse is easier to do than say human flesh tones. Traditionally Darker hues are also easier to deal with than lighter... At least for me it is. For the Sauron piece once you can master one piece of armour the vast majority can be done too. Only the hands would require more on hands precision for really tight spots.

The heel spikes are repaired now facing up...took about 45 minutes and got another maybe 5 minutes touch up...feels good to have a totally correct Sauron now
