Those are huge freakin mantises. They don't get that big where I live.

Hummingbirds have nothing to fear from the 2" long mantises there.

No way...these mantises wouldn't stand a chance against scorpions. They are too small. But Mantises are the one insect that I like more than Scorpions.

He lives.
Yeah I've always been sort of fascinated with mantises too. They have a...subtle elegance about them.

I want one of these lab accidents. :lol

I've never seen that!!! Wow! That bird must've been sick or something.

It's more common than I ever imagined! They hang out on hummingbird feeders to catch them! :(

Found this......yuck!

Our's are bigger than 2" here. I'd say at least 4" or 5".

I had a pet duck that nailed one once. It was huge. I tried to stop her but she got to it before I could.

I felt bad. :(

I remember seeing a mantis in Thailand in about '87 or so. It had to be 6 inches at least, maybe as much as 8". It was stalking a moth that was flying around a mv lamp. That moth was freakin' huge as well.

Between the two, I thought briefly that the insects in that area may not have evolved from their prehistoric sizes.

Seems like it's always like that in jungles and closer to the equator. :lol

Dunno. I've noticed he's been very sluggish and hasn't burrowed at all for the past few months..he passed away about 26 hours ago. :(

The 30th of this month it will have been a year since I purchased him from the pet store. I wonder if it was his age, he was full grown when I got him.

He's the emperor BTW.

Well, I am sorry to hear that. I have read that about Emperors, though. I would almost bet that it is not age. If I remember correctly, it is something about some of them not being able to get by the stress of things like being moved. But you had it for a while before the behavior kicked in, right?

Yeah he seemed fine until idunno, maybe 4-5 months ago. He became very slow and wouldn't burrow or even enter his bark anymore. He'd occasionally drag his tail as if he was too weak to carry it.

I was just reading and was reminded of something else. If the humidity is not right when it is time for them to molt, they can die from not being able to molt. Do you think that is a possibility?

I doubt it. I gauged the humidity early on to make sure it was suitable, and I've pretty much used the same routine of misting since I acquired him.

Plus I'm fairly certain he was full grown.

I'm wondering if his terrarium was too small. He would often try to climb up the sides. It seems unlikely though because I know many people keep emperors in much smaller enclosures..
I believe his is a 10 gallon.

Hrm, that now leads me to believe he was trying to escape something unpleasant like mold...but I didn't see any.

Definitely makes me wonder. I will be watching closely with mine and if I notice the same pattern of behavior, I am going to up the size of the terrarium...as I have been planning anyway...and see what happens.

I have been wanting to get a much larger, but shorter, enclosure for it. I am thinking about custom making a coffee table that will be its enclosure. That should be a pretty good size for it.

So far, though, it seems happy. Healthy appetite, digs like a psycho mole...the landscape of its terrarium changes about every three days...

Oh, you got an Emperor? Or are you talking about your uhh...whatever we decided it was? :lol Silvestri something.

That's how Grimm was though for the first half a year. It would take him a few hours to burrow to the bottom and he'd never come out other than for water.

I was originally going to (maybe) purchase a female and put them both in the 3-foot long enclosure that my boa is outgrowing, but since his death I guess I have two empty enclosures to fill...wonder what I should get next.

Oddly, I kind of like those tailess whip scorpions..not sure I could sleep in the same house as one though. :lol

Or maybe something other than an arachnid...
