Looking over my collection there isn't one female statue that I don't know something about. I do have some male characters that I don't know anything about. Like this for instance:

I got it because it looked so damn cool. Nothing wrong with getting anything just because you like it.

Why am I reminded of this movie?

Ok so I had ordered Lady Death knowing nothing about her but ended up sending her back and no regrets. I also just POed Tweeterhead's Elvira and no very little about her aside from pinball tables ;)

That's about it.
Now people saying they don't understand it, aren't you getting Queen of Dead?

I agree with what a few of you have mentioned with regards to "art".

I've bought quite a few statues based solely upon the sculpt and without having an emotional attachment to the character or individual that the sculpt was based upon. When considering the acquisition of any artistic piece, I feel it is important for the piece, itself, to "talk" to you. What does it matter if you know the entire history of a given character? Sometimes a sculpt is that much more powerful when the only story you know is the story that the piece is telling on its own.

Having said that, I have gone out and bought some comic issues AFTER getting certain pieces so I could learn more about that particular character and give me more information that could possibly allow me to appreciate a piece more.

I have several paintings as well that are meant only as artwork in themselves with no background story available (and none being required) and I still love them.
