A smile cracked when I looked at the for sale section yesterday seeing so many offloading their Batman figures. Nam, remember those days when they all said The Dark Knight was so precious to them?

The thing that amuses me the most is how too many people go back on their word(s), sworn how precious it was to them and when this is done they've got nearly zero of a collection. Yet some of them call themselves Hot Toys fanboys.

I'm not criticizing them for what they are doing. They can sell it all and for all they want. It's just the fact too many have short memories. Or choose to, "Figure of the year" talk, then some of them it's now a figure they no longer like or it's deemed a not very good one now but with high prices, some of them. ;) Soon as one does it too many seem to pile on.

If they were that much of a fanboy they would be saying they'd have to be killed to pry their collectibles out of their dead hands. Does that make me a fanboy? I haven't sold one figure since the day I started collecting.

I remember a bunch of douches posting in the HT Hellboy wishlist thread how they'd definitely be down for Red and Abe if Hot Toys made them. Then, when the figures came out, every Tom, Richard and Harry had some ____ing lame excuse as to why they couldn't buy them. I'm assuming most of the stuff here is talk given most of these guys wouldn't fork out cash for Berserker, a single figure, let alone all the figures they're requesting. :lol

How much of this stuff do you own? Do you own the early preds? Any of the early Aliens, Terminator stuff?

I used to have pieces that now fetch upwards of $500 (Anicom scar, Elder 2). Sold them all a year later. No regrets, I just lost interest in them.

At least we should all be lucky we don't have to deal with short packs, limited exclusives and such in the name of 'collectibility'. I dunno man, if you want that, trading cards are that way. F'k the Charizard card, I could never get one unless I buy it marked up or buy boxes and hope to land on one, either way, I'm unnecessarily payin goutta of my ass for 'collectibility'.

When I get bored with something (which happens from time to time), I sell it. I don't care how much I like something when I buy it, feelings change on things.

I guess I'm not the "Hot Toys fanboy" I thought I was :monkey2

attaching your ego to your toy collection is ____ing retarded. they're just things and it's not like you can see manufactured scarcity by looking at them. i collect HT figures because they look cool in my display case. i couldn't care less how many other people have them.

if you find yourself in a situation where you need a few hundred bucks from flipping toys, you aren't handling your finances on an adult level to begin with and you probably have no clue what a smart investment is. it also means you can't afford the hobby. stop buying $200 toys and pay your bills. spoiled kids and wage-slaves are not entitled to own expensive collectibles. they're a luxury for those who have disposable income and that's who HT markets to. there's a reason why you can't get these at walmart. i've never heard any respectable financial adviser tell anybody to stock up on ____ing toys.

exactly.

You, my friend, HAVE NO CLUE about my finances. Do not act like you know me or know crap about how I obtained my collection. Since you know so much about me I shouldn't even have to say this but eh... My whole collection is paid off and nothing is not paid off that I do own....all paid with my own legally earned money. Actually I purchased everything I have in my case by buying and reselling collectibles....guess there is some money to be made in that? LOL@your point of me trying to stock pile toys to sell for the future. How you got that I was somehow suggesting someone buy up tons of toys, so later on in life they can retire on it after they sell 40 year down the road( actually I have real money invested in REAL things, but you knew that too right?)...cracks me up to no end.

Its funny that my wife and I do just fine with our money and my whole collection was purchased with money I made on the side by doing something I love. Not one dime has been spent out of the money I earn at my wives or my regular job nor do I owe money to banks that I used to put it on a credit card with. No I am not rich but I am not poor either, don't try to throw me in with a group of people when you know nothing about my life. I know my limits when I make a purchase and paying my regular bills always comes before I do something that is a luxury like buying a new collectible, but again... I guess this is only for the super rich...LMFAO!!! and I am the one with the ego? PSH

Yeah, I dunno. I stopped collecting the Hasbro stuff in the 90's. :dunno

cool story, bro. i'm sure you're the exception to the rule. just like everybody else.

I for one would love to see re-releases of the Original Predator (which I have but believe they can vastly improve the mask and bodies - hey if they can do several regular Dark Knight Jokers - they can re-release the Predator...
also I missed out on the Elder from p2 -- so I'd love another shot at getting one -- dont mind if they improve the body on that one either...more like the Predators - almost hidden joints

I bought Abe and Hellboy + Berserkern :nana:

and no HT shouldn't rerelease anything I would be uber pissed to see a reissue of elder 2 since I forked out major cashage for that mother____er.

I think everyone gets into collecting also to hope that what they buy may one day be worth more money and become somewhat of an investment...so just in case you decide to sell, hey...heaven forbid you made some money along the way by being a SMART buyer. This has nothing to do with greed or dishonesty, it has to do with making a smart buying decision for the future.

I agree and you make a good point, it's cool to have something that you enjoy go up in value. It's a nice added bonus. But if my collectible never goes up, I'm ok with it as well because I got it because I enjoy it.

If you consider a seller dishonest, greedy because they want a FAIR market price for an item and to somehow "give you a deal" because you got into the game late....psh.....give me a break. Its like selling your car for $5000 less than what the Kellyblue book average price of it is to help someone out you do not know at all. This attitude of everyone having to give everything to people just Erks me to no end. That is what is wrong with this country, everyone wants free hand outs but dont want to put forth any effort to earn stuff on there own.!!!
I partially agree here. If it's a friend that I'm selling to or a fellow collector who really wants the item, and is not just trying to make a quick buck by buying low and selling high, then yes I'd probably give that person a discount. But it it's some stranger that I don't know then yes I agree, I would try to sell it for as high of a price as I can get.

Yeah, a lot of people are fickle. When something better comes along, they discard the old and buy the new. I like to keep the old versions of my collectibles and buy the newer versions of that same collectible, and compare the old and the new side by side. It's fun to see the progression and evolution of the collectible through time.

The Down side is, I'm running out of space!!!! Maybe the people that are fickle have no choice but to sell their figs when new ones come out because they don't have the space to store them all. I'm not so mad at the collectors who eventually sell their collectibles for better ones, but what does annoy me are collectors who just jump on the band wagon because everyone else does it. You should buy something YOU like, not what someone else says is cool. Just as there are fair-weather-fans, there are also fair-weather-collectors I guess.

...wage-slaves are not entitled to own expensive collectibles...

{interjection}
:monkey2
You unintentionally hurt my feelings.

Hey, I get by. If one can afford to buy something without screwing themselves in the end then they are entitled to it despite what they earn.
I get what I can, and I'm happy with that.
:wink1:

Although I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, and the quote looks harsher out of context like this, I found this somewhat offensive too.

Nobody is entitled to own expensive collectibles. Some are lucky enough to. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford these things good for you, but just because you have the money to spend does not mean you get the moral high ground over someone who earns less and still wants nice things.

By the same token that someone on low income should be focused more on paying the bills etc, perhaps your extra money could go towards helping those less fortunate rather than spending it on ephemera.

Not looking to start an argument, just suggesting something to think about next time you or I spend a fortune on a piece of plastic. :peace

there's really no "moral high ground" in an internet discussion about toys. i can afford these things because i earned them, not because i'm lucky. as to your suggestion of charity - what and who i give to is nobody's business but mine, but i will say local toy drives and Goodwill know me by name. again, if Hot Toys catered to people with low incomes, you could go get these at Walmart. that is not the case. same reason local car dealerships don't sell Lamborghinis.

and i know that guy with the giraffe. it's not even his, he rented it just to shoot that commercial.
