Hello,
I thought I'd share the following project I'd been working on over the past few months, given its potential to interest other Batman and comic collectors.
Like many collectors, I have a large stack of single issue comics, dating back to my childhood. My issues are all bagged and boarded to protect them. However, I'm more interested in the stories and artwork than any inherent "collector's value" that these issues might have. So while I like to keep my comics in good condition, it's just a real pain to open each bag to read each individual issue - especially if there are multiple issues in a single story arc. In fact, I found I was just avoiding the hassle altogether, and never going back to read them.
So I decided to get them bound into custom hardcovers. Here were my first two, collecting the Doug Moench - Kelley Jones - John Beatty run on "Batman" in the mid-90s.
I used the original cover artwork to design my own custom front and back covers, and wrote up the blurb.
While the issues aren't left intact (as they are trimmed and glued together), they're certainly well-protected and are a real pleasure to read through. I even tore out the double-sided ads and back covers, for a smoother reading experience. Here's an example of just how much crap you get to skip - the extra ad material and back covers are in the left stack, torn from the books bound in the other two stacks:
As with any bound collection, "gutter loss" can be a concern, as the binding squeezes the center together, so you might lose a bit of artwork in the middle. But it's really very minimal. Here are some double-page spreads, which still look great:
I also included title pages, tables of contents, letter columns in the back, and a reprinted essay from the internet about the Moench-Jones-Beatty run as a bit of extra back matter material.
