Nevertheless Detolfs are getting rarer worldwide these days. You cannot order them on the webside anymore. This is a typical sign for a product going to retire. They will most likely start to retire it this year which will effect different states at a diferent point of time.
Most likely we will get an alternative though which might be not as cheap and a little different.

Nope. That's the way I got 'im.

I bought it from a member here, but I'm pretty sure it's stock.

Here's mine again:

Wow I'm loving that Batman. I never knew that even existed. I'm going to have to hunt one down :)

I went to Ikea this past weekend to get another Detolf and couldnt find any on the floor so I ask a sales person and they told me they are discontinued. also noticed it wasnt available on their website. I ended up finding one on craigslist for 35 bucks and picked it up the next day :)

It's still on their website, but says "this product is not for sale on our website, check if it is available in your local store."

Once I checked to see what it would cost to have one shipped and it was $250. :horror

I was also told they were discontinued and they no longer appear in their catalogue. :(

The guy at my local IKEA said they were not discontinued, but recalled.

Might have to call him...

On page 2 of the above thread a guy got a reply from IKEA on this topic:

We have been experiencing a delay with our Suppliers for our Detolf
cabinets in Black/Brown. This supply issue has caused our stores to become out of stock and remain out of stock. We are currently working
to resolve this issue, however, we haven't been given a confirmation
for delivery to our store. We are estimating that stock should begin
shipping into our stores within the next 2-3 weeks. We do apologize
for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Sounds hopeful to me. :)

Hello,

I thought I'd share the following project I'd been working on over the past few months, given its potential to interest other Batman and comic collectors.

Like many collectors, I have a large stack of single issue comics, dating back to my childhood. My issues are all bagged and boarded to protect them. However, I'm more interested in the stories and artwork than any inherent "collector's value" that these issues might have. So while I like to keep my comics in good condition, it's just a real pain to open each bag to read each individual issue - especially if there are multiple issues in a single story arc. In fact, I found I was just avoiding the hassle altogether, and never going back to read them.

So I decided to get them bound into custom hardcovers. Here were my first two, collecting the Doug Moench - Kelley Jones - John Beatty run on "Batman" in the mid-90s.

I used the original cover artwork to design my own custom front and back covers, and wrote up the blurb.

While the issues aren't left intact (as they are trimmed and glued together), they're certainly well-protected and are a real pleasure to read through. I even tore out the double-sided ads and back covers, for a smoother reading experience. Here's an example of just how much crap you get to skip - the extra ad material and back covers are in the left stack, torn from the books bound in the other two stacks:

As with any bound collection, "gutter loss" can be a concern, as the binding squeezes the center together, so you might lose a bit of artwork in the middle. But it's really very minimal. Here are some double-page spreads, which still look great:

I also included title pages, tables of contents, letter columns in the back, and a reprinted essay from the internet about the Moench-Jones-Beatty run as a bit of extra back matter material.

My next three volumes collected the "New Gotham" era, from the monthly Batman titles at the start of the millenium.

Greg Rucka's run on "Detective Comics," one of my favorite runs of all time. Beautiful, simple, muted artwork coupled with a relatively realistic take on Batman, focusing on his role as a detective.

At the same time, Ed Brubaker was doing his run on "Batman." A little more flashy, with artwork by Scott McDaniel, but still relatively grounded, with a focus on some of the more realistic villains, like the Penguin.

As you may know, Brubaker and Rucka teamed up to do the critically acclaimed "Gotham Central" after these runs, and the seeds of many stories and characters from that monthly were planted in the above stories.

The last two books I had bound spotlighted two villains. Both are featured, to one degree or another, in plenty of reprinted crossovers, but neither have many graphic novels devoted to them as the main villain - and both have plenty of smaller stories that were never reprinted in paperback form. So I collected a bunch of these stories together in two bound volumes.

Tales of the Riddler:

Tales of bane:

It's great being able to just take these books off the shelf and read them without the inconvenience of searching through stacks and taking issues out of (and putting them back in) bags. If I want, I can flip to a random Riddler story. Or go back and read through the same Batman run I did as a kid. And when I'm done, I can put them on a nice bookshelf with my other graphic novels, instead of in a box in the back corner of my closet.

If you'd like to revisit the old stories in your collection, and honestly don't care about resale value, then this is a great way to revitalize your collection. You can design your own graphic covers or go with a more traditional "library binding" look, and if you do several volumes at once, it can be EXTREMELY cost-effective and cheap. I've posted more pictures and information here, but feel free to ask any questions you may have. There are also a few small on-line communities and forums with plenty of guidance and information.

Wow these look great and clearly a lot of careful thought and planning went into this.

And the execution looks impeccable. Very nice.

You're right about it being a right pain in the ass to go back and read old archived bagged and boarded issues, I never end up doing it either, might eventually look to do something like this...

That's a great idea! I've been scanning some in to read on my Ipad, but it is very time consuming!

An elegant solution! Congrats

Great work Haytil. That is amazing cataloging. I feel the same way about grouping the arcs in one book. Nowadays I'm on Amazon looking for the latest Batman releases which groups arcs together.
Not like yours though. I'd pick these up in a Heartbeat if they were available.
