Well, they are, and they aren't. The underlying sculpt is one of the better HF sculpts we've gotten in 1/6 - it's just that the barebones paint and poorly executed eye system (and presumably the gluing of the eyes and hat) denigrate what could have been great.

Modding is not my thing.
I find the idea offensive (from Sideshow, not you) that a $200+ figure is decent enough as long as you then do X,Y,Z to it including sending it to someone else to repaint for $XXX

IMO the only modding should be optional to create a cool variant (such as turning a Raiders Indy into a BD Temple figure...)

This is coming from MJ Choi. Looks awesome but surely be like $150+

Man, that is a seriously beautiful sculpt.

But I just can't. Not again. I've been chasing after a truly great Indy figure for so long now. I just can't invest the time and heartache and MONEY on the custom route again.

Why can't any company seem to crack this? This is seriously starting to feel like an unending quest at this point!

One of these days my quest will come to and end and I'll finally find a truly great Indy figure ... and when I open the box ... my face will melt off.

That looks incredible, why can't a company make something like this? I didn't realise before but no one seems to have made a great Indy figure except for Toys McCoy which is pretty cartoonish compared to other present day figures.

I really don't know how people feel about this, but why isn't there ever any talk about the SS KOTCS headscuplt? I think for all the misses people talk about, I think that one is pretty good. Granted its kinda a weird expression, but every time I look at it, it's totally Indy.
Again, just what I think. Paint is decent as well. I guess it might be because nobody wants old Indy. I'm just happy to at least one decent sculpt, even though he's up there in age.

Yeah, I have all the sculpts and I do really like that one. He looks old obviously, but it is a "very Indy" expression and they kinda pulled it off (and I'm not usually a big fan of extreme expressions on 1/6 figs.)

I don't really have any interest in an old Indy, I want an exact copy of the Indy in the photo on the old Kenner 12" box.

I think both Raiders Indys, and the KOTCS version, as well as the TOD one are all good sculpts from SSC. Problem isn't the sculpt, it's paintwork primarily. Now the HT sculpt, that's just a bad sculpt. But on top of that, you can have sculpts that look fantastic in their raw state, that never quite reach the level of realism you would expect once painted up, no matter who does the painting. The SSC sculpts and WGP sculpts all had this problem to one extent or another IMO. Hopefully that won't be the case with the Choi sculpt.

Yeah, the WGP sculpt looks awesome unpainted but then painted it somehow loses the likeness quite a bit - very weird.

Yeah no matter how close a likeness you think you got, you just never know for sure until it's fully painted.

You would think these companies would do a test painting first before finalizing their sculpts, but I get the sense that doesn't really happen and they often just jump right into production with it.

You got a pic? I'm curious.

There was a "Customs section" thread I saw a few months back - just search for Warriors Gate Productions or WGP and Indiana. They did a normal and smiling sculpt. Seems like buyers thought they were a bit undersized also, and a bit distorted over the way the digital file looked.
