The Ninja example is fine for melee vs ranged attack, but a Jedi's powers have no such encumbrances. Vader could kill you as effectively from 30 feet away as from 3 without a weapon. He can seemingly even broadcast his force choke over video chat!

If you want the real reason for the sabers, you'll have to watch the bit about 7-Minute Abs between Ben Stiller and Harland Williams in There's Something About Mary. ;)

George Lucas is of course the Hitchhiker character. ;)

I agree again but that comes in play when a Jedi can force choke a non Jedi. However if 2 people face off with the same powers it kind of cancels each other out. In other words Vader can't force choke Obi because Obi can counter using the force as well. So they settle it with a lightsaber dual.

But wouldn't that have been awesome to watch? More choking, (I sound like Cheryl/Carol from Archer), more levitating, more throwing objects around. More force.

Totally and I think we got to see some of that with Yoda and Palatine's fight in ROTS which IMO was a highlight of that movie.

Then there's also the "Battle of Wizards" at the end of Episode 2. They go toe to toe with their force powers and Yoda deflects everything Dooku throws at him. Then proclaims "It is obvious this contest can not be decided by our knowledge of the force, but by our skills with a light saber."

That clearly shows that evenly matched force users cannot use those parlor tricks on each other but only be defeated by the sword.

That scene also delivers one of the worst lines in the SW saga. I like AOTC. But I cringed at that line.

:exactly::goodpost:

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Gotcha. I thought it was great. Dooku had some of the best lines in the prequel as well as sidious. Some of the other Jedi not so much. Especially Anakin but Dooku was one of my favorite prequel characters besides Palpatine.

Yep. I understand the mechanics behind the line, but (to me) it stuck out like a sore thumb and sounded a bit cheesy.

***and please forgive me for adding to the derailment of what this thread is about. I would make a sucky Jedi.

It was as if this amazing display of force powers, that you would think to be the pinnacle if skill, could not compare to the skill and power it takes to defeat a Jedi, or Sith, using a light saber. As if to say, "you think that's power, wait till you see this cause yo asp is in trouble!"

I literally got goose bumps when he said that line. To each his own I guess.

Got mine last night and I think I am in love. The right tusk was badly bent straight out of the box and broke off shortly after. Luckily I was able to glue it back on without too much trouble. This is my first 1/6 scale Star Wars figure, but now I feel like I need the Hot Toys Luke to compliment Vader.
