We have the beginnings of evidence for the hypothesis.
I've been searching in vain for written evidence for dying, but we're left with Exhibit A in the glass case.
If the theory is correct, then we needed a third coat from Sideshow: one that is neither brown nor blue, but something in between.
Long ago when we discussed this before I settled upon purple-brown, which under blue lighting or filters turned more towards blue.
Well, it was purple-brown under certain lighting conditions. Certain fabrics when dyed, take on an almost iridescent look. This is because the outer layer of flock or surface dyes differently than the main fabric. So tilt it in your hand and it can look either colour. That's what happened with Han's coat. Badly dyed brown coat which took on different tones when in different environments, but it was navy blue when it was shot, and that was the intent, I have no doubt about that anymore after seeing those pics yesterday. So in a way everyone is right about the coat. But the intent was indeed navy blue, which is why they dyed it. And that makes complete sense in an overall look at both Empire and the Hoth scenes. Han's Bespin jacket was exactly the same colour, that's not a coincidence. And I do believe he was meant to stand out from the other rebels, because (A) he was the star and (B) narratively he wasn't really part of the structured army of the rebellion still, he was dragged into the war but came from the outside.
Anyway, this will no doubt rage for years to come.
