Great shots Fel. My Ex should finally be here late this week or early next. Here is my stance on the 2 statues. Sorry for the massive post. There is no particular order to my lists, the numbers simply serve as a separating point.
SSEX Predator Maquette
Positives:
1) Screen accuracy. The fact that this was partially produced and endorsed by SWS holds alot of weight. There is no denying that this is the more "screen accurate" representation.
2) Size. For many of us, the size of the CM is simply too difficult to handle in our collections, and it does fit in nicely with other SS 1/4 products.
3) Dynamic display. The main reason I desire the SS over the CM is the fact that I can choose between 2 different heads, and they both look spectacular.
4) Investment. With the Ex only having a ES of 300, this piece is obviously a grail, and the interest level will continue to be high, therefore making this a worthwhile investment. Finding it at a good price is key however.
Negatives:
1) Inaccuracies. Even though this piece is more screen accurate, it is a little upsetting that the shoulder canon is a little oversized. I feel like this can be easily overlooked however, and is a small problem.
2) Pose. While I personally like the pose, I do believe it is a love or hate scenario with the pose, many people choosing the latter.
3) Availability. Like the "investment" positive, this is hard to find, making it expensive. Also, it seems that interest is peaking right now, so even though they are coming out of the woodwork for purchase, they are going at premium prices.
4) Fragility. This kind of comes with the territory when it comes to large polystone pieces, but finding one of these completely mint is becoming harder and harder. Good thing is that as long as it is repaired well, the value will not be hindered much.
Cinemaquette Predator
Positives:
1) Size. Many here will debate the "bigger is better" point, and even though it is a negative for me, there is no doubting that the scale is imposing, and when compared to the SS, it stands out. Its presence is undeniable.
2) Artist Interpretation. When this statue was first unveiled, many complained about its accuracy. I was the first on this board to point out that this was likely due artist interpretation. The CM is a vision of what Steve Wang really wanted the Predator to look like, but SWS was limited to the tech available in the mid 80's. If this was sculpted by someone uninvolved with the movie Predator, I might view this as a negative, but Wangs involvement gives him the credentials to make the adjustments.
3) Pose. The pose of the CM is just slightly better...it really just has more balance, and seems to command more agressiveness. This is really a toss-up with the SS, and really could go either way. Personal preference rules here.
4) The base. Simple here, the base on the CM is better. It has a better representation of the water, better paint, and a arguably better sculpt. Some may dislike the "foliage" but that is a small issue here. I also like the helmet in the mud, even though the lenses arent quite accurate.
Negatives:
1) Inaccuracies. Yes, the face is not properly propotioned, the body is a bit bulky, and the spine neckless is oddly tiny. Also, the helmet in the mud is sporting the wrong lenses. Not a big deal for some, but if you want the most accurate version of the Predator, the SS is the way to go.
2) Cost. With the retail cost of this coming in a 2K plus shipping, and the fact that it is constantly increasing on the secondary market, it is a hard pill to swallow. However, if you are debating the purchase of either of these, money is probably not a problem. The SS should have a lower entry price however, and you would be silly to pay more for the SS than the CM.
3) Size. As mentioned before, it is simply too large for many to fit in their collections, but if you have the space, scratch this from the negative catagory.
4) Edition Size. I'm not sure what the final production tally was on the CM, but I believe it was slightly less than 1000, making it more readily available than the SSEX. However, if you are comparing this against both the Ex and regular SS, the numbers almost even out.
Winner: Both. I think that it is impossible to say which is better here, and it really comes down to personal preference. I may like the SS more, but I can totally see why someone would prefer the CM. To state that one is better than the other is being slightly arrogant in my opinion. If you own either of these statues (or both,) be thankful that you own one of the best representations of quite possibly the best movie villian ever.
