So any thought on the SciFi to Syfy change?

I don't really think that was it. The Real World got some of the highest ratings they ever got, so of course they had to spawn it off. Then VH1 went the same route. If any channels should change their names, it's MTV and VH1.

Beavis and Butthead at least had music in it. Aeon Flux was really short videos. I don't know Daria. I'll have to look that up.

you don't know Daria? too bad that was one of my favorite cartoons, very smart. Daria was the nerd girl that Beavis and Butthead would do the whole Diahrea cha cha cha thing with.

Liquid television was fine it was the real world and singled out the ruined MTV.

B&B was huge when it was on and it also spawned a TON of merchandising and the first successful MTV Movie. It's that taste of success (aka money) that got MTV to start looking into non music video shows. MTV was still good then, they mostly showed music videos at the time, but it was the beginning of the end. Also, the Real World had popular music playing on the show too, but just not music videos like B&B.
And it all started with Liquid Television, a short half hour non-music video show that changed MTV into what it is today.

if we really want to get technical then the first non music show (that i can remember) was the 1/2 hour comedy hour. I guess we can blame the extrodinarily popluar stand up craze at the time for the downfall of music television.
