Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

But I do believe it can die by the Death of a Thousand Cuts... meaning you can chip away at it over the course of many films to eventually make it so uncool no generation will have it.

Or so un-SW!

TLJ has now ushered in the era of 1 billion being considered a failure.

Just like BvS made $875m a failure!

Several of the DC EU movies cost $250-300m to produce, and the marketing spend on those is upwards of $150m (HR reported BvS was $160m.) Breakeven point via theatrical on a $300m film with a $160m spend is around $900m (other revenue streams on a movie like BvS would add maybe $180-200m, but over several years.)

It keeps creeping up:

ASM2 708: Failure
BvS 875: Failure
TLJ 1.2B: Failure

In 2019 2 Billion will be considered a failure :lol

ASM2 did make a profit of $70m on a total expenditure of $570m, but it's a high-stakes business - the interest alone on that movie was many millions a year (accruing from greenlight to profit point.) $70 million is not a lot of money only if you were expecting $250-300m.:lol

And BvS's biggest foreign market was China, and the studio receives only about 25% of the B.O. take over there, not the normal 50% domestically or in most foreign markets.

:lol

One weird thing tho... Why HAN SOLO and not ХАН СОЛО?
It's just very strange to have Latin title for a Russian poster.

We have top men handling it.

Solo doesn't have to be good- it will break $1 billion- however with a cost of $300 million +++++ it won't be a big profit film

SW is so entrenched in our culture if the budgets are reasonable($200 million tops) they will always make money

I'd say it very much has to be good to break 1 billion, when TLJ is only going to pass that mark by a few hundred millions.
Rogue One made 1.05, being widely praised by both fans and critics. It's hard to generalize for now since there has only been one Story movie, but it's fair to say their appeal is far more limited than trilogy movies (which makes sense). Plus you can add to that the fact that a lot of fans feel like the Solo movie wasn't really necessary.

I will honestly be very surprised if it crosses 1 billion comfortably, especially if it's average or bad.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I don't at all seeing this making a billion. People are already knocking it and they haven't even seen footage.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

They must really have improved that de-aging technology.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I find it impressive and yet still not managing to overcome the uncanny valley effect.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I find it amazing that they felt the need to waste time and money on such a cheesy five seconds shot.

...

Then again, same goes to Tarkin's scenes - there was absolutely no need to make that stupid CGI head.
Guy Henry already looked great and only needed some good makeup, which they could enchase via CGI.
