Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

:duff

I have it as my fourth favourite, as I have to keep the three classics together.

As I wrote before, I've been waiting for a film like this for 35 years.

And I don't care if people disagree, because as I also posted before...

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

$83.32M 3-Day Weekend (Est.) (North America)

$65.0M Overseas Opening Weekend / 54 Markets
$148.3M Global Opening Weekend

(source: twitter.com/BoxOffice)

Estimates for North America 4-day weekend now $101M

Clearly, this shows that having a male protagonist in a SW film was a bad idea. Han should have been played by a strong woman. #theforceisfemale

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Yeah I was waiting for a Daley voice over to happen lol

I think it has one of the best representations of the At-St shame they gave it away in the trailer.

When it jumped into frame during the battle in the mud it looked and sounded so menacing!

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

SOLO could have been the greatest SW movie to date and it still would have failed. 50% of the SW audience is sending KK a message via SOLO.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I'd love to see Lord and Miller's footage just to compare but if Howard's cut is any indication then Kennedy absolutely made the right call. It's the second best Disney flick after RO. In many ways it's even better than RO and is a contender for third best SW film overall. I loved the "vintage EU" vibe it had throughout, as if it was a Brian Daley novel or classic Marvel SW comic brought to life.
Yeah it's too bad we'll likely never know what they were coming up with, I'm really curious! But man if that rumored budget you mentioned is true, the "what if" scenarios no matter how irrational are probably haunting a few people right now lol

Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

:lol

Gawdammit. Abort boycott! Go see this film ASAP.

I thought the film was a 1000 times better then TLJ but it’s definitely not a must see movie. It will surely be forgotten in five years after the next 100 “a Star Wars Story” films are released.

They could have taken this script and characters and placed it in the old west and it would have been the same movie maybe even better.

There is nothing memorable in this movie at all that will stand the test of time for repeat viewings. But it’s definitely a better Star Wars film then TLJ.

I’d go see Deadpool 2 or Infinity Wars again before I would go see Solo, but I would watch it again on tv when it’s released, maybe. Lol.

Makes sense. :duff

Right now I've got it fourth as well but with a slightly different line-up.

1. ESB
2. SW
3. RO (better villains and third act than Solo)
4. Solo (better heroes and first/second acts than RO)
5. ROTJ
6. TLJ
7. TFA

8. TPM (which just got a major boost from Solo)

9. ROTS
10. AOTC

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Even though I ended up liking the Solo movie, I can see why tickets sales are down....

1) We just had The Last Jedi few months back, while it made good money, it still made about $800k less then Force Awakens which tells me not a lot of people went back for 2nd or 3rd helpings of the movie, there was defiantly some fan backlash over how the director/writer handle Luke's story in the movie and I can see jaded fans not wanting to see another Star Wars movie so soon after that.

2) The actor they got to play Solo was not an exact copy of how Harrison Ford look when he was in his early 20's, so that's going to turn off a lot of hardcore fans of Han Solo...

It does seem that each Star Wars movie release is making less and less at the box office... It probably didn't help with the family audiences that the writer and actor said that Lando could be pan-sexual... that's probably going to turn off family audiences... and according to the review I read they said only 18% of the audience was families.. I'm not sure when people involved in movies are going to learn that people don't want their family entertainment to deal with *** issues, so implying that a character is a huge pervert is probably not going to help things.. And the thing is the Lando character was portrayed in this movie the same way he was in Empire Strikes Back, so all that talk from the writer and the actor was a bunch of nonsense that might of hurt the movie.

RO is a close fifth. Solo is just ahead because it's an old style adventure, whereas RO was a 'mission' with a pre-defined ending.

That's why I skipped the second trailer and all TV spots, that AT-ST was a surprise for me. :D

This film had the greatest likelihood of outright rejection by me and it's as if Kasdan and Howard literally sought my own personal approval for every single story beat regarding Han's backstory before immortalising them in celluloid. I'm blown away by how much they got "right" about my favorite character in all of fiction. :thud:

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I'm not sure where to ask this, but since this thread is active, I'll ask here. I'd like to do an action heroes tournament of famous movie characters. 32 characters, a bracket of 16 on each side. All rounds would take place in one thread. Where is the best place to post that thread.

OT I hunk would be a good place. I’d play.

This was obviously a test bed for future recasting of Luke and Leia, Ewan already owns Obi-Wan because Alec G was an old man.

Here’s the thing though.

Honestly I was getting burnt out on Ford’s constant trashing of Han that I became much more open to Alden.

But Hamill and Fisher fully embrace (embraced) their characters so i’m much more closed off to recasting Luke and Leia.

But given the financial disaster of Solo I don’t think I will need to worry about the further adventures of Luke, Leia and Han a few years post ROTJ.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Full on Old Republic is the best way to take the extra curricular SW movies. Just do it Disney.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

In the cartoon or books, how do they explain Maul surviving being cut in half and falling off the platform in TPM?

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I didn’t think it was possible but they succeeded at showing a scary Chewbacca all narly with mud.

Chewie is so very much associated with cute and funny due to his mannerisms that it was a breath of fresh air to see a monster who had probably killed and ate other humans in that cell prior to Han saving his own life by barely speaking his language.

I also liked the reason and method they went with for his Kessel run.

First that space monster was freaking terrifying and awesome.

Them having to use the actual cargo to escape a black hole and monster was great and it was a nice balance between time and distance because the Falcon had to take a very dangerous short cut but that short cut required for it travel very fast so it was a nice build up where both reasons served the story and made for a thrilling scene instead of them just going fast because “the falcon can”.

I also loved how calculating Han was in the sense that even though Beckett got him locked up he still kept his cool enough to save his own *** by ignoring what Beckett did to him and instead form an alliance with Beckett. Great character depth given to Han by them going that route.

I thought Rio was a great alien character and his death was one of the most realistic deaths yet in the entire series.

Going again today for my 2nd viewing because I want to see it in a Dolby screen this time so lets see how it holds up.

Honestly I didn’t have any faith in Howard yet he pulled it off.

What do I mean by that.

Well day before release there was zero faith in Alden we were all just going to celebrate watching him fall on his face.

I mean the nerve of them trying to give us a Han that doesn’t exactly look and sound like Ford, ridiculous.

Day after release and Alden now owns young Han!

Wut!

Your sarcasm meter is in need of an adjustment lol

I meant everything I wrote there.

Silly Wor-Gar tricks are for kids.

I guess this means you didn’t like Solo?
