The force silly

Ok, but who found his two halves at bottom of the pit? Or did he pull a Leia Poppins and used the force to float back up? Does the force prevent massive blood loss or surviving the severing of the spinal cord, etc...?

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I didn’t think it was possible but they succeeded at showing a scary Chewbacca all narly with mud.

Chewie is so very much associated with cute and funny due to his mannerisms that it was a breath of fresh air to see a monster who had probably killed and ate other humans in that cell prior to Han saving his own life by barely speaking his language.

I also liked the reason and method they went with for his Kessel run.

First that space monster was freaking terrifying and awesome.

Them having to use the actual cargo to escape a black hole and monster was great and it was a nice balance between time and distance because the Falcon had to take a very dangerous short cut but that short cut required for it travel very fast so it was a nice build up where both reasons served the story and made for a thrilling scene instead of them just going fast because “the falcon can”.

I also loved how calculating Han was in the sense that even though Beckett got him locked up he still kept his cool enough to save his own *** by ignoring what Beckett did to him and instead form an alliance with Beckett. Great character depth given to Han by them going that route.

I thought Rio was a great alien character and his death was one of the most realistic deaths yet in the entire series.

Going again today for my 2nd viewing because I want to see it in a Dolby screen this time so lets see how it holds up.

Honestly I didn’t have any faith in Howard yet he pulled it off.

What do I mean by that.

Well day before release there was zero faith in Alden we were all just going to celebrate watching him fall on his face.

I mean the nerve of them trying to give us a Han that doesn’t exactly look and sound like Ford, ridiculous.

Day after release and Alden now owns young Han!

Wut!

This post is great. I agree with you Jye, this movie surprised me because I honestly did not want a young Han Solo movie and with the director change on top of everything I was expecting it to be terrible. Now I want young Han to be the series that takes us into the underworld of the SW universe. This could be how we get characters like Bossk, Dengar and maybe even Hammerhead woven into new stories.

I really hope they make more. Which completely surprises me that I just typed that.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Okay gonna try for a full review here but I'm still decompressing so here goes. Spoilers below.

I've seen comments on other sites indicating that this film was totally "unnecessary." And I'd have to say I'd be inclined to agree. But so what when it's this entertaining. :)

Was Temple of Doom necessary? Hell no but it was fun to watch Indy in action again. Did Han have really any character arc to speak of in this film? Not really other than his possible complacence with letting Q'ira go in favor of exploring the galaxy with Chewie instead.

But Solo had three things in spades:

1. Very likable characters
2. Incredibly exciting action sequences
3. It honored the entire collective EU backstory of Han Solo that I've always held onto in my own personal head canon.

Does that third bit really mean anything to anyone other than me? Not really but #1 and #2 alone make this an easy recommendation for any fan of exciting heist movies.

I honestly don't even remember where I've gleaned all of Han's backstory anymore.

1. Him having a brief stint in the Empire
2. Him being from "Corellia."
3. Him winning the Falcon from Lando in a card game called Sabaac (I believe the 1980 Topps ESB cards first hinted at this? I honestly can't remember anymore.)
4. Him rescuing Chewie from slavery and winning the Wookiee's loyalty

It was *all freaking there.* And just as importantly or more importantly it was all executed well! I loved seeing him aspiring to be a pilot but ending up as a dirty mud-infantryman since apparently he was too mouthy to even be a lowly Stormtrooper, lol. Classic.

Loved the Sabaac games.
Loved Chewie's intro.
Loved Han's face the first time they went to lightspeed.

Liked all the characters with the possible exception of Rio. After one viewing he felt a little more "Mike Wazowski in Pixar" than a SW character to me. Drydon was good but not great.

Absolutely loved the train heist.

Was grinning ear to ear at Alden standing in classic "Harrison Ford promo shot/Brian Daley novel cover" stance with the blaster up and one arm extended while he was shooting the Kessel guards outside the Falcon.

And speaking of Alden sure he didn't look like Ford (and his height was definitely distracting especially whenever he'd stand next to Harrelson who isn't that tall himself) but he owned "young Han." Maybe not as good as River Phoenix as young Indy but the beginning of TLC sucked regardless so who cares, lol.

Glover WAS young Lando, he was basically perfect IMO.

I was put off by the different look of the Falcon in the marketing but once I realized that it was essentially "Lando's Falcon" for most of the movie I was fine with it.

I was disappointed to hear that Han Solo would be getting a "mentor" character after again how lamely TLC had young Indy essentially just copying the look of some no-name relic thief but the dynamic between Han and Beckett was awesome. Loved Harrelson in the role and was very pleased that Han only fell in line until he had the angles he wanted and/or the upper hand.

One of the biggest laughs for me was the clever way they explained why Billy Dee Williams never pronounced Han's name correctly in the OT. :lol

Speaking of his name once again I scoffed at the notion that this movie would "explain how he got his name" (*shudder*) but if you think about it "Solo" really has always been a bit too "on the nose" of a moniker but we've always accepted it because it was instantly iconic. Whether he only went by his first name or was reluctant to divulge his true identity to the Imperial recruiting officer I'm fine with both because I found the acquisition of his adopted surname to be quite organic and appropriate. Thank God there were no "Dread Pirate Roberts" or "Darth is a title" shenanigans.

I loved the twists and turns with loyalties and double crosses and am glad that Q'ira didn't die. I am also fine with the surprise cameo and now that I'm hearing that Obi-Wan might be a direct sequel to Solo with Kenobi crossing paths with you know who again all I can say is "all right then, sign me up" lol.

I was really hoping for a Fett "RO Vader" moment in this or Jabba or a Rancor but have to tip my hat to the lack of gratuitous callbacks to the OT.

Is this film a masterpiece? No, maybe an 8/10 or even 7.5/10. I'll figure it out when the dust settles after a few more viewings. But I loved it (just like other non-masterpieces--Temple of Doom, ROTJ, and so on) and that's all that matters to me. As I've already said it even trumps the mighty RO in some pretty significant ways (though I still give the edge to RO overall.)

I've read that Alden let slip that he signed on for two more sequels and in some ways it'll be too bad if the box office earnings kill future films with this cast but maybe it'll be for the best. Poor Emilia Clarke though if she has to star in yet another failed attempt at a trilogy, lol.

I literally cringed when Chewie pile-drove that one Kessel ground head first into the ground and seemingly squished his entire head and neck. Brutal. :horror

In fact Chewie was so feral and unpredictable for a split second I wondered if Beckett was about to lose his arms for taunting Chewie during holochess!

EDIT: Also loved the obligatory Clint Howard cameo and seeing Willow Ufgood on screen in a Ron Howard picture again. :D

If the severing of his entire ******* body didn't kill him within seconds, when his upper half hit the bottom of that shaft and was pulverized into bone fragments, fluids, and powder, what was left to scrape up and put back together?

Maul being alive in any way shape or form is dumb. It's just plain dumb. At least Boba Fett went into the sarlacc pit "whole" and has a lot of weapons on him so could have conceivably clawed his way out with a lot of effort.

But good lord, fans' willingness to accept Maul being able to survive just cause he was "cool looking" and wanted to see him in more stuff is just dumb, in my opinion. But sticking him in this movie with no explanation whatsoever is ever dumber.

But on a par with the level of laziness, plot holes, and general stupidity I've come to expect from Disney Wars.

Have to agree with this.

I was also surprised that I bought the excuse for the 40-year-long lack of explanation for the Kessel Run mistake (Lucas thinking parsec meant time rather than distance).

Well right on. Glad we've got RO/Solo then. :duff

No kidding. And I thought I *never* wanted any of Han's past mysteries explored after the horrors of the PT but Kasdan/Howard did the impossible in not only giving us a viable (and EU consistent) backstory of cinema's greatest scoundrel but that they did it in a way *that makes me like his OT character more.* Unbelievable. What they accomplished here was even more impressive than the Russos handling of 87 characters in IW, lol.

Yep. As hoped, looks like the "one-offs" are the way to go for Disney.

Yes, I know Solo is intended to be a new trilogy -- I think that thinking is why the ending got so muddled -- but right now its just a one-off. Might remain such if BO doesn't improve (which would be fine by me).

Just happy to have another Star Wars movie that will be fun to watch over and over.

So Disney (and Kennecus) is two-for-four. Not bad considering. That's about Lucas' score as well: three-for-six.

Fake Han in Solo > Real Han in ROTJ

Mind = Blown

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I definitely liked young Han better than old Han.

Think on that.

Also, mystery of why they cast Alden has been solved.

Yep! I'm glad that LFL understands that they don't need to blow our minds with game-changing plot surprises every outing. Just crank out fun and rewatchable entertainment with plenty of pew pew noises and likable characters and I'll be there each and every time.

Fake Han in Solo > Real Han in ROTJ

Mind = Blown

Mind is absolutely 100% blown. I don't know how many times I gnashed my teeth over Disney's announcement that they would tread on the sacred ground of Han's backstory and now here we are with a recast prequel that fits with SW/ESB Han better than ROTJ does!! :google :thud:

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

It sucks if you watch it as a Star Whore movie.

It's good if you ignore all the Star Whore crap, which is pretty easy to do. :dunno

The reviewer said something that rings true. My gut says it is so. He said Han only seems somewhat authentic when he's interacting with characters that we've seen him with in the other films. Not at all when he's alone.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I think Han is gonna be in Episode 9.

Cause it's not been established that people in the SW universe can survive getting lightsabered and tossed down a bottomless pit. That's what the Maul cameo was for. It's foreshadowing Han's return.

It rhymes. It's poetry.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I think Han Ghost will have a very good chance of happening. Even if its in Kylo's mind.

Leia ghost too.

I think when we see Leia's funeral, she will be holding Han's gold dice (paralleling Padme holding Anakin's necklace).
