Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

They all assumed there'd be a switch because that's what Han had explained to Beckett (the plan you see Han going over but that you don't hear). So there was no switch but Beckett thought there was and so Vision was undermanned on his ship, especially when Qira turns, as all the guards were attacking Maya Rudolph on the ground thinking a switch HAD been done. It was not very interesting or clear why NOT switching it was a good idea -- I guess Han figured they'd have Vision outnumbered regardless? :dunno

wtf... you made me do a double take. Everyone I saw it with was like "is that Maya Rudolph in mo-cap?":rotfl

And then the plan was... what? Kill Vos and... what?

Yeah, you'd think pulling a smuggled blaster (which he managed to do - they apparently don't have weapons scanners and rely on the "honor system" on Vos' ship) would have been easier if just killing him was the point.

Drawing faces is easy as hell for anyone with even a remote trace of talent.

Whoever drew that.....thing.....obviously doesn't.

That artist is actually pretty decent usually. His panels have a good flow and are usually cinematic. Tracing faces doesn't mean someone doesn't have any talent. Anyone who was a fan of the 90's Star Wars novels would know that almost every cover painted by Drew Stuzan included portraits of the main characters that were derived from film stills. I think artists use this tactic because the reader wants to see the characters how they are remembered with as accurate detail as possible. By the way, the Vader panel and padme panels are traced over stills of ROTS. So the tracing was excessive there but I still think the artist has talent.

Why the hell do you keep thanking people for posting a review like you made the movie? You did that in the black panther thread. Weird.

so manners are weird? saying thank you is weird??? could you Be MORE of a freaking Millenial?????

RT audience score is inching up - from the low 50s it's now pushing 60%.

I'll see it a second time to see if my opinion changes, but I won't be going multiple times trying to force myself to like it (like I did with TPM!)

IMDB has been steadily going up, 7, 7.1, 7.2.

It's a more sensible break down of votes since IMDB hit the reset button, but I don't put too much stock in them.

All I know is that I liked it, and it felt true to the golden age of the Han Solo and Lando trilogy novels.

Only one thing disappointed me, and that was, as I mentioned while I was watching it,

The recruiting officer thinking up the surname 'Solo' for Han, because he was an orphan with no known family. There's a chance that Solo is a common name on Corellia, and that the naming was a lucky coincidence so he will eventually find the House of Solo. Still, coincidences are common in Star Wars: Leia gives Artoo a message for Obi-Wan; the droids land on Tatooine and go straight into the hands of Leia's brother...

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Cause as polite as that may be in real life, it's just not done on message boards. It's spam. It's like you're just padding your post count for some reason.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

The most objective and thoughtful review I've seen. Its not influenced by his biases. He wants KK fired for TLJ but he still doesn't trash the movie just for the sake of it. "Whether you like this film or not will tell me exactly what you go to SW movies for." No the movie does not suck but it's not good either.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

No idea. :lol It’s convoluted to say the least.

I thought Han was trying to play both sides and maybe just get paid so he could then go buy his ship or something, but it makes little sense either way.

But at least the script explained to us that Han uses the nickname Chewie because he felt Chewbacca was too long. That was a burning question I had about their relationship.

wtf... you made me do a double take. Everyone I saw it with was like "is that Maya Rudolph in mo-cap?":rotfl

Yeah, my buddy and I both turned to each other when she took the mask off. Was also a little unclear if they were trying to confuse the audience about her being Harrelson’s daughter or something, kinda strange casting.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I didn’t think it was possible but they succeeded at showing a scary Chewbacca all narly with mud.

Chewie is so very much associated with cute and funny due to his mannerisms that it was a breath of fresh air to see a monster who had probably killed and ate other humans in that cell prior to Han saving his own life by barely speaking his language.

I also liked the reason and method they went with for his Kessel run.

First that space monster was freaking terrifying and awesome.

Them having to use the actual cargo to escape a black hole and monster was great and it was a nice balance between time and distance because the Falcon had to take a very dangerous short cut but that short cut required for it travel very fast so it was a nice build up where both reasons served the story and made for a thrilling scene instead of them just going fast because “the falcon can”.

I also loved how calculating Han was in the sense that even though Beckett got him locked up he still kept his cool enough to save his own *** by ignoring what Beckett did to him and instead form an alliance with Beckett. Great character depth given to Han by them going that route.

I thought Rio was a great alien character and his death was one of the most realistic deaths yet in the entire series.

Going again today for my 2nd viewing because I want to see it in a Dolby screen this time so lets see how it holds up.

Honestly I didn’t have any faith in Howard yet he pulled it off.

What do I mean by that.

Well day before release there was zero faith in Alden we were all just going to celebrate watching him fall on his face.

I mean the nerve of them trying to give us a Han that doesn’t exactly look and sound like Ford, ridiculous.

Day after release and Alden now owns young Han!

Wut!

Yeah, the whole Falcon aspect of the Kessel run was done pretty well. No complaints about that, and I like that they figured out how to make 12 parsecs correct. My buddy and I use to talk about that years ago, trying to figure out how there could be obstacles that only Han and the Falcon would have dared to go through, etc. So it was nice to see that played out on screen.
