Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

As a interesting and pointless side note....

My theater has 15 showing today.

Every one before 3 pm was 80 sold already....

Solo is going to bloom late.....it was never going to make Saga numbers, but I think the early bloggers will be wrong and it will make a decent box office. There are no other decent films on the horizon for a while. June 8th for Incredibles 2 and late June for JW.

So it has 2 weeks to itself.

You've been Fatwa'd.:lecture

If I let Return of the Jedi into my heart for only a few positive reasons, despite the overwhelmingly bad things about it, then I have to do it with Revenge of the Sith. If I do it with Revenge of the Sith, then I have to do it with The Phantom Menace and Rogue One, which also have decent aspects to them despite being mostly crap.

To allow yourself to love Return of the Jedi is opening the floodgates to everything that ended up going wrong with Star Wars. It's hypocrisy. You follow that dark path and you end up like the people that love Attack of the Clones and The Last Jedi, I don't want to be one of these people!

It's poor 3 day total was because of all the guys like SNIKT who promised to teach LFL a lesson after TLJ by choosing to see Solo on Monday instead of Friday (some of you might remember that that was a literal promise that he made, lol.)

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Alden's Solo sync'd up with Ford's 1977 Solo pretty much perfectly though I can't say I'm surprised if casual fans who were born after the OT was released in theaters fail to realize it. When Leia said "I knew there was more to you than money!" she was making a statement of fact. Even ANH Chewie knew it was against Han's character to abandon Luke and Leia in their hour of need which is why he chastised him while he was packing up the reward money.

He didn't "always do the right thing" in Solo. Otherwise he would have joined Enfys Nest's group when asked. His default mode was to have tunnel vision and look out for himself *unless* his nose was rubbed in a true injustice (he didn't care about the Kessel slaves until Chewie forced him to look and he didn't care about the Rebellion until his new friends were about to get vaporized. ) Then his altruistic side would come out and he'd act accordingly. Yes he refused to rescue Leia until a reward was offered but that's consistent with his character because she was just a nameless, faceless prisoner at that point.

Han rescuing Chewie from slavery was always the original backstory for how they met which you'd think would be an act of altruism but interestingly enough "Solo" did *not* present that fateful act accordingly and instead made Chewie's rescue a moment of simple self-preservation on Han's part. Very well done.
Khev always finds a way to rationalize/justify what Disney is trying to do, even when it takes some Jedi-level mental gymnastics. No easy task. Hats off to you! :D

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

It makes more sense that he had a good heart, otherwise his change at the end of ANH would've been more far fetched.

Khev explains it well...

Which makes his decision to abandon his family even more far fetched.

Yes he did. :rock

Second viewing i noticed this awesome background alien from RO fleeing the spice mines of Kessel while Han and company fought outside the Falcon. :rock

I was also happy to see the return of RO's creepy "decraniated" servants (people missing the top halves of their heads.)

The half heads reminded me of the monkeys without skull tops in Temple of Doom lol

You might have a point but it was the first Disney SW movie to not receive an A cinema score, it received an A- :lol

I allow myself to love Jedi, and put the brakes on the other stuff. And I acknowledge the fact that, for me, it's all about nostalgia. Same reason I can still watch and love the Transformers cartoons, Superman: the Movie, and Disney's Robin Hood cartoon--all very flawed if you try to compare them to modern, objectively high quality counterparts.

But it's not possible for me to view some things objectively. Things I first encountered as an older youth or adult, it's a lot easier. I don't think that's hypocrisy, so much as using a different scale. But then, we all have biases going into things for one reason or another. I'll admit that I was primed to be disappointed with Solo, after what Disney has given us in the last few years. And it reinforced my concerns..

C’mon kara you’re not being fair all he did was explain exactly what was up on the screen.

True that Khev is the master of fun mental gymnastics (why i’m on team Khev to begin with) but that wasn’t it at all he was just describing the character as depicted.

Shame on you now you have to tolerate my avatar and sig lol

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I think the problem here is people don't remember what they saw when they first watched Star Wars.

Some are more susceptible to brainwashing than others, case in point, the elders here who love and make excuses for all these Disney Star Wars movies. They're very much like the easily influenced youth that ate up the prequels and rationalized all the horrible decisions that were made for those at the time.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I never thought I would have to make this argument.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Which makes his decision to abandon his family even more far fetched.

That's far into the future though, sometime in the 30 years between ROTJ and TFA/TLJ.

A person's life won't always follow a straight line as on a graph. Relationships and events are always going to pulling them in different directions, especially the kind of characters leading the kind of lives they do in that universe. It's not even a realistic depiction of human life to have a new grand adventure every week. All they really are is excuses to tell escapist stories of life in space and on a multitude of planets.

Nope. Not self centered at all. Luke is the good guy.

B-b-but Chewbacca growled in disapproval . . . and stuff! He knows Han for who he truly is and he was always Solo™: A Star Wars™ Story in theaters May 25th buy your tickets today!

More proof that Han always had a heart of gold!

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

You're not supposed to make too much sense of this.

That's why Lucas often shrugged his shoulders and laughed during interviews.

Because the fans took it far more seriously than he did.

Just beautiful man....just beautiful.

Lol, you were right when you pointed out that Alden's Solo matches SW/ESB Han better than ROTJ Han did.

On another note did anyone find Beckett's whiny and silly "I hurt my thumbs!" to be a bit out of place? I wonder if that was a Lord/Miller holdover.

And on yet another unrelated note I really dug Enfys Nest's funky "Ghost in the Shell" style theme music.
