Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

On another note did anyone find Beckett's whiny and silly "I hurt my thumbs!" to be a bit out of place? I wonder if that was a Lord/Miller holdover.

It felt like an outtake. Something Woody said while the cameras were still rolling, but they kept it in anyway.

It was still passable, as though he'd been so intent that he hadn't realised how hard he'd been gripping the controls.

ROTJ- just bad
Solo- very good

Sorry but when you watch both within hours of each other Solo is the classic and ROTJ is a lazy poorly executed blunder

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

He growled after Luke said Leia is rich.

I know, it's a joke. I'm on your side kid.

Han Solo was always originally a roguish, scoundrel, piece of ****. With time, conditioning (and memory loss), people seem to have lost sight of that though and have mistakenly bought into this kiddyfied, sterilized Disney censored view of him. Lucas made the same mistake later in life when he did the whole "Greedo shot first, it was self defense" crap because at that point, all the kids had in their head that Han was a rootin' tootin' good guy and it's kind of cold to have him straight up murder someone. Like Spice Drugs and loose women i.e. PROSTITUTES (that he was sitting with before the kid and old man show up), that's NOT the Disney, fun for all ages, box office profitable way! Mushy altruism and fuel cells for Han Solo it is. SOLO™ is canon now and all previous media must conform to it, such is Star Wars.

It would be in your best interests to accept these revisions of your favorite characters Vault Boy. They have big plans for your Luke Skywalkers and Han Solos, without the dirt and grime of course.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Lol, you were right when you pointed out that Alden's Solo matches SW/ESB Han better than ROTJ Han did.

On another note did anyone find Beckett's whiny and silly "I hurt my thumbs!" to be a bit out of place? I wonder if that was a Lord/Miller holdover.

And on yet another unrelated note I really dug Enfys Nest's funky "Ghost in the Shell" style theme music.

That was definately a L&M scene.

Yup the theme used for EN was quite beautiful.

ROTJ- just bad
Solo- very good

I put the hate brakes on ROTJ at the 50% mark.

There is 50% of that movie that is just epic from memorable quotes to visual firsts to captivating character interactions to music integration to thrilling action.

So no no no ROTJ is not ALL bad.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I love that I’m that kind of guy that does not watch movie trailers. Every scene/character/sound bite/environment/action sequence is seen for the first time as I watched the movie. I love it!!

Curious if there are Youtube movie reviewer who review movies without watching trailers. I would have more respect for their comments and opinions compared to reviewers who watch trailers and do “SHOT BY SHOT” movie trailer reviews. WTF!!! How can these people review a movie having already seen the general idea/look of the movie? Its like reviewing a joke when you heard it for the fifth time. The impact comes when you hear the joke first!!

Rio didn't really bother me the second time around and I agree that his death and Han's reaction were actually pretty powerful. In fact I like that prominent characters died in both heists and of course the final double cross.

Thandie Newton really owned her character for the small part she played.

He'd lived the life of a rogue. He also did what he had to do to survive (e.g., shooting first), but he wasn't a villain.

Star Wars was a family movie, made especially for kids big and small. That is, Lucas was making it for himself to recapture the serials that caught his imagination as a child. He and Spielberg would, of course, repeat that with Indiana Jones.

So Han could never fall too far off the path. He was a heroic role model who makes amends at the end of ANH when he brings the Falcon into the Battle of Yavin.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

What was your take on Solo?

I loved it. After struggling between my admiration for some of the boldness in TLJ and disappointment with the short-sightedness of the same (IMO), SOLO was absolutely what my heart needed.

I was on board with Ehrenreich from the casting news because I had just seen him steal Hail Ceaser and I could see elements to draw on in that performance. So I wasn't surprised that he was great but I was surprised that he grand-slammed it. Not just in his Han portrayal but in the Han/Chewie dynamic (also massive props to Joonas Suotamo for his seamless transition starting in TFA but best utilized here). I was mostly unfamiliar with Glover - never watched community or Atlanta - but he was also fantastic. Harrelson is always good and Khaleesi actually showed more charm here than she ever gets to on GoT.

The story is by-the-numbers but SW has never been about blazing new trails in narrative concepts. :lol

Loved the aesthetic choices from costumes to aliens. It does feel a-piece with Rogue One in that way. Even with the disparate tones I believe it's the same OT universe. It's really a beautiful looking film from the start, another thing in common with RO, while the new saga films seem to struggle with a stagier, blander presentation.

I need to pick up the soundtrack, I just remembered.

It's a shame that it appears to be financially reaping what TLJ sowed. But that is what it is. Disney is certainly familiar with this concept as their animated movies have gone through it in the past - the reception has at times reflected the quality of the previous more than the new product.

At this point I am much more interested in these anthology stories than the future of the used-to-be-Skywalker saga.

But I will be there to see how well JJ pulls back on the yoke. :lol

I was quite shocked that Rio was killed so soon and so realistically.

But I would’ve preferred no Rio at all as a trade off for an extended train assault. :gah:

So went with the wife and son to Dolby and it was a fun (and sold out) time.

She enjoyed it and she wasn’t really looking forward to it.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Hated the 4-armed guy, glad he bit it early. His CGI was really bad too, looked like a cartoon. He didn't feel like he belonged in Star Wars at all.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I liked the 4 armed guy. I liked how he said wookie.

In the good old days there would be at least 2 action figures of him by now. :lol

Beautifully said man. :duff

Great point about Alden and Joonas nailing the Chewie dynamic. And agreed about the visuals. Like BR 2049 before it it's pretty amazing that a film that is so often so "grey" could look so beautiful. I also liked the new aliens, particularly those at the first Sabaac table. Too bad about the box office because against all odds I'm really on board for further adventures with this cast. Hopefully said adventures won't be doomed to play out only in comics and novels.

I will have to disagree I think not only did he look good but are you ready for this.

Are you sitting?

His up close death was actually more realistic and more sad THAN NOLAN’s TALIA death scene!

Yes a cartoon had a better death than an actor directed by Nolan!

See now you can appreciate Rio a little more lol

No seriously watching his death was pretty damn weird for a SW alien no less.

Han was like...wow wtf.

And yes loved his “Is that a Wookie” line lol

There's like 10 Hans I want from this movie, lol. Corellia, Mudtrooper, Train Heist, Kessel Guard disguise, Smuggler, etc.

I liked Lady Proxima and her guards, they felt s bit Dark Crystal-ish (since I'm one of the handful on this forum that actually likes that movie, lol.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Still have yet to see it.. Going later this week. Just not that excited. First SW film I have not seen on Opening day or weekend.

Sorry Khev. I blame The Last Jedi :)

If this was around in 2005 we would get a battle pack of Han and CHewie in the shower (possibly with Lando peeping).

Also, not sure it's been mentioned, but does L3 call Lando "Landonis" when she's annoyed with him? Like the way you use your kid's full name when you're trumping up some charges to send them to bed?
