Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

That's very true. Didn't think about that but it works beautifully.

Although it means L3's "revolution" ultimately failed and all those droids were re-enslaved...

I think the quick arrival of that Star Destroyer was meant to suggest that the uprising would be very short-lived.

:lol :lol

jye what did Vader do at the end of ESB when the Falcon got away? Went off and assumedly sat on his butt in his meditation chamber. :) So I don't see why it's such a big deal that Immortan Joe was just chillin' when Max and Furiosa had escaped out of his reach.

I was actually surprised that after he did the run that no one could verify it other than those who were in the cockpit with him. But after thinking about it I think it's actually funny that it's basically a boast that Han would forever make in favor of the Falcon to which others just roll their eyes, lol.

Another thing that Solo clarified that I always thought was weird going all the way back to ANH was 3PO's line at the beginning "we'll be sent to the Spice Mines of Kessel or smashed into who knows what." I always found the notion of the Empire sending protocol and astromech droids to mine spice very weird but Solo showed an odd assortment of droids on the planet and how they were forced to assist so kudos to them for finding a way to make sense of 3PO's line.

I 2nd what Wor just said especially with L3 getting smashed there.

I like that Lando admitted that he only tolerated L3 because of her valuable database but eventually he also ended up learning more about himself from her demise and transplant.

She was a sassy robot even though in her current environment it was never going to end well for her.

L3 and K2SO sacrificed themselves for the greater good has 3PO ever done anything heroic.

Lando must’ve been dating Lobot lol

Damn I totally forgot about that!

Nice !

Well, in the films usually its the line similar to this... "Its the Ship that made the Kessel run" the pilot is usually forgotten or not mentioned.

I just realized that his trademark “On 2 wheels” maneuver was what he used on Corellia, Kessel space and ESB worm.

I’m slow.

Funny that the train also made the same maneuver.

OK ... over the long weekend, I saw this three times (and Infinity War two more times, but that's off-topic), and I absolutely loved it. I can't add much more than what has already been said, but I do have to point out that when ...

Chewie first got into the co-pilot's seat and the main Star Wars theme immediately kicked in

... I was smiling uncontrollably like a little kid.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

So much for the narrative that TLJ's earnings meant nothing because "all live-action SW movies are guaranteed to make over a billion dollars."

Solo is unique. It is not part of a mainline trilogy, or set inside a mainline trilogy film (as RO was, exploiting THE most iconic mainline film's storyline, visuals/designs and characters.)

People both here and in the media keep trying to compare Solo to RO and there really is little comparison other than the "A Star Wars Story" tag. Solo always had far less going for it.

Solo involved the highly risky recasting a beloved character (two if you count Lando) and a story that has little/nothing to do with the mainline trilogy story. Solo was the very first true test of Star Wars "in the abstract" as a drawcard. As in, without the Skywalkers, without the host of classic supporting characters (the only "intact" character Solo had was Chewy) and without the classic story tropes.

Yes, TLJ backlash and franchise fatigue played a major role but ultimately Star Wars, presented without the trappings of a mainline trilogy, failed the test. And it was a far riskier move than Disney thought, and doesn't bode well for the Fett and Obi Wan movies if they take a similar route.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Amazing how many people here are happy with Solo. I'm one of them.
It's a mediocre movie - but it has some great elements and it felt SW correct.

My point is.. if we are happy with this level of SW filming - just how bad was The Last Jedi to get everyone up in arms.
:lol

This was pretty much my feeling. The great elements were pretty great though.:lol

Yep imagine if George never made ROTJ and gave us Solo in the 80's instead. It'd be a celebrated classic. Then if Kennedy still took over the franchise and gave us ROTJ as a continuation of SW/ESB people would be outraged at how lame she allowed Han, Fett, and Vader to become. Some people just won't ever take off their nostalgia blinders no matter how superior certain aspects of the Disney films are compared to what Lucas gave us. SW/ESB will always be untouchable but Disney has been doing a bang up effort at getting close, especially with the spin-off flicks.

TPM, AOTC, ROTS, and half of ROTJ are an absolute joke compared to ST/RO/Solo.

Duh, it would have starred HF if made in the 80's. Solo starring HF would have been a fan's dream come true.:lol

TPM, AOTC, ROTS, and half of ROTJ are an absolute joke compared to ST/RO/Solo.

Um... no.:lol

I would take a dozen viewings of ROTJ back-to-back, gagging with Ewoks and HF mugging, over a single viewing of TLJ (and two viewings of TFA.)

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Never thought of the way this ties in to the OT, spice mines of Kessel, L3 being the peculiar personality inside the Falcons computer, recommending Lando due to its affinity or him. Nice touches, I have to say!

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

They did but there was never a way that casual audiences were going to keep up with the pace that LFL is cranking these out. I don't even know how the MCU is still successful, its really quite mind boggling. Maybe it's because the MCU has just enough variety with it's different main characters and teams for each movie or maybe it's because the younger generation doesn't feel like the MCU is "their dad's franchise" and are more easily able to embrace it as their own, who knows.

Either way Solo deserves better but like I said before if cinematic perfection like BR 2049 can bomb then nothing is guaranteed to break even (well except the MCU, lol.)

The MCU is largely unrelated characters and worlds (that in some cases are so far apart you wonder how they blended them - Cap, IM and Thor for example) that intersect and then separate again - Star Wars is essentially one world and centered around a fairly narrow character storyline. We only care about Rey because we understand she's Luke as a girl - she's either a Skywalker or should be a Skywalker.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I love when Chewie took a seat behind Qi-ra in the cockpit and just smiled at the camera like - I'm a patient Wookie.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

They were talking about boycotting Starbucks. That's a cup of coffee and a muffin.:dunno:rotfl

One was because of racist actions of employees and how they treated customers the other is because, um, they didn’t like how their imaginary hero was treated in a movie.
