Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Is it just me or did they severely undermine what it means to “complete the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs?” That was what bothered me most. It was, like, a twenty minute sequence, and I was like “Jesus Christ. That doesn’t seem all that impressive, anymore.”:lol

Well, it was closer to 13.

He just dropped the decimal point. :wink1:

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Shhh. You're not supposed to say those things.

I liked the movie, I just felt like, now, every time I see Han mention it, it’s just going to be like a dude saying “I once made it to a 7-11 in 5 minutes. Hit all the lights that day!”

Well considering that the only way to do the 12 parsec shortcut was to skim that maelstrom which required a drop of explosive croaxium in your ship's fusion reactor to escape (while dodging moon sized monsters and crystals smashing into each other both before and after maelstrom) I don't really see that sequence as being repeated by anyone else, ever.

Oh yeah and the only way to even find the maelstrom was with a one-in-a-million navigational system that L3 clearly won't be sharing with anyone else.

I think that’s kind of my point, though. The Kessel run always seemed to be about speed and it always struck me as “The Falcon is one of the fastest ships in the galaxy and I one of its best pilots.” When you throw Maelstrom’s and Space Monsters and Gravity Wells and one-in-a-million navigational shots with Croaxium into the mix, it no longer highlights his skills as a pilot or the Falcon as a ship, it just makes the whole sequence seem like something that he got unrealistically lucky on.

Ah, I see where you're coming from. Maybe you aren't aware but the "parsec as a measurement of speed" was a goof that George made when he originally wrote Han's dialogue in ANH since a parsec is actually a measurement of distance. So the EU (West End Games RPG if I remember correctly) basically changed his meaning to refer to this funky navigational route of various jumps to get into the Kessel system and reach the planet and Kasdan obviously ran with that idea for "Solo."

Keep in mind that in the Cantina Han refers to outrunning Imperial Cruisers as a specific example of the Falcon's speed and merely mentions the Kessel Run as to why the Falcon is famous.

But even with all that if you accept the Kessel Run as presented in Solo as being the fluke of flukes (which I'm fine with since it means another pilot will never accomplish it no matter how good they are) it still couldn't have been done without Han being a total badass behind the wheel.

Parsecs have always been distance. The only way to to brag about parsecs is to take a short cut.

The short cut in question was a dangerous one.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

In the cantina Han Solo appears to be a completely full-of-**** hustler trying to peddle his wares. I would be disappointed if the Kessle Run was simply a matter of having the best ship.
I think the sequence clearly shows his ingenuity as a pilot.

Yep. His boast -- "less than" -- could simply be taken as something everyone knows in the universe -- that you have to go into the danger zone to make it in 'less than' 12 parsecs. So if you survived the "less than 12 parsecs" route then you must be pretty good.

Yeah. I like it. Proves that something new and good is better than reliable and tired.

JAWS is gonna go on Thursday after "I Feel Pretty" replaces it on all Large Format screens, lol.

Oh man JAWS is going to love Dolby Atmos Amy Shumer.

Lucky bastard.

Honestly it really helped that you guys brought up Fury Road like two days before Solo hit theaters. That reminded me that even if I don't accept Solo as "canon" that it can still be an entertaining movie in its own right. Turns out it was entertaining *and* I have no problem accepting it as canon which is just mind-blowing, lol.

I know that diabolical Wor-Gullet Por-Gar put you up to this. :gah:

What's funny is that watching SW and Empire right after "Solo" it kind of made Luke feel like the new "Rey" lol. I wanted more Han but then there's this new kid who can suddenly hold his own in a gunfight and space battle with no military training (in infantry or aerial combat maneuvers) kicking ass while Han is just kind of there to help him out. ;)

It was also cool to see the contrast in upbringings between Han and Luke at similar ages and how Han could walk into a hive of scum and villainy in his early 20's and carry himself like he owned the place compared to timid Luke who almost got killed when trying to order a drink, lol.

Oh man

jye proceeds to lick his finger tip and make sizzle sound effect.

Nice!

I asked for another and there it is, nice!

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Other fans I talked to were very meh about this movie, even before TLJ came out. Up until the end, so was I, didn't want this movie to even be made. It came out better than I thought it would, but not as good as I hoped.

Certain people, myself included were going to see this no matter what, but yeah, I think 6 months between movies had its effect and Disney did very little to ramp up excitement for it. The trailers Came out so close to its actual release, which had most thinking something was wrong with it.

I enjoyed it, but 7.5 for a Star Wars movie, from me?! I haven't rated so low since the Prequels, though Solo was much better.

My main gripes were a boring villain and L3 being obnoxious, and I didn't like the 4 armed alien. But before seeing it, which is what really counts, was apathy towards the actor and potential watering own of Han Solo.

I'll own it, I may even watch it more than TLJ, cause while it's not as good, it's more fun.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

jye what did Vader do at the end of ESB when the Falcon got away? Went off and assumedly sat on his butt in his meditation chamber. :) So I don't see why it's such a big deal that Immortan Joe was just chillin' when Max and Furiosa had escaped out of his reach.

I also saw it as a race , maybe not against other ships, but a race against time....

Thats sort of what we got...but if felt a but of a let down.

I was waiting for some group of ships to have seen the Falcon go in, and another group see them come out....and those two talking about how crazy what they did was, and how that must be some sort of super fast ship.....hence the legend begins..

That at least would show how this lucky attempt, became legend, because it was seen from the outside only, and no one realized why they went so fast.....

Of course , since its a measure of distance, its all academic.

I imangned it like a race too, you know cannonball run, Kessell run. But then It’s a spice mine, so I thought it was whoever gets the spice to a certain customer first kind of thing. But in the context of the movie it made sense. Get the crystals someplace before they blew up.

I was actually surprised that after he did the run that no one could verify it other than those who were in the cockpit with him. But after thinking about it I think it's actually funny that it's basically a boast that Han would forever make in favor of the Falcon to which others just roll their eyes, lol.

Another thing that Solo clarified that I always thought was weird going all the way back to ANH was 3PO's line at the beginning "we'll be sent to the Spice Mines of Kessel or smashed into who knows what." I always found the notion of the Empire sending protocol and astromech droids to mine spice very weird but Solo showed an odd assortment of droids on the planet and how they were forced to assist so kudos to them for finding a way to make sense of 3PO's line.

Think about this: the Falcon recommended Bespin to Han in Empire because L3 knew Lando was there. Awwwww.

That's very true. Didn't think about that but it works beautifully.

Although it means L3's "revolution" ultimately failed and all those droids were re-enslaved... since 10 years later 3PO stills fears the Spice Mines of Kessel.
