Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Last night I literally bust out laughing when they landed on Kessel as I remembered Junkion's comments about the Gonk droids banging on computer panels with lunch trays. Then I laughed again when it actually happened, lol.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Yeah that’s my favorite joke so far lol

Now that Solo might end up losing Disney 150-200 million dollars I think this is the beginning of the end for KK as she will throw herself on the sword as any good executive will do in expected ritual.

I don’t agree with talibane that SW is now dead because they didn’t pay 4 billion for SW just to chicken out now especially after having just made 4.5 billion from just 3 SW movies (TFA/TLJ/RO). Just say that again lol

Their streaming service will be born from SW DNA for crying out loud.

So yeah they now take a 200 million loss and for Disney that’s like me losing $100 lol

But make no mistake about it KK has a sword waiting for her.

Time to retire to her 100 million dollar mansion.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

She went out in a blaze of glory IMO. If she had just let Lord and Miller make an awful Ace Ventura comedy would Solo have bombed any more than it currently is? Just staying the course with those two guys would have probably cut their losses by a good $100-150 million, they might have even simply broken even. But giving them the boot and spending however many crazy millions more to have Howard reshoot most of the film gave us about the best damn Solo prequel I could have asked for and it'll probably be her undoing.

I'm saying SW moving forward is a huge creative challenge in the wake of the relative failure of Solo and with the ST - the last vestige of OT story continuation - ending.

Disney has discovered SW's appeal is much narrower than MCU - the paradigm SW was supposed to emulate - with appeal solely powered by stories tightly linked to the OT.

What Solo's failure means is that people won't go to see a Fett or Obi-Wan movie like they will even an Ant-man or Doctor Strange movie (two more lesser-known MCU characters) as true "standalone" stories - it has to be closely linked to the core OT storyline, over and over, or it fails.

The issue is that $3B+ ($2.5B theatrical rentals, $500-700m merchandising) Disney has actually earned so far from the SW brand was made by mining the OT and when they tried to vary that formula, it failed.

THAT is why outlets like Deadline are saying that Disney will be rethinking moving ahead with the Fett movie. All standalones from now on must tightly follow the RO idea (ie. set "inside" or very closely tied to an OT storyline) and how the mainline "trilogy" idea continues post-Ep IX - without close OT connection - is anyone's guess.

did guardians flop?

the biggest complaint is that this movie is boring and too long. so the comedy they were making is probably much better. adding humor would have made it less boring

I think Disney will continue to just throw stuff out there to see what sticks. Perhaps they will have the good sense to, at the very least, wait a year between films. Maybe be smart and wait 1.5 or 2 years.

I also agree that KK's days are numbered now. I think she may wait for the final Episode 9 to announce her "retirement" because she wants to spend more time with her family. But spending the kind of money she did for this response on Solo was a bad call to the bean-counters.

I bet Ron told him to make that exact face when L3 grabbed him, lol.

I would be just as star struck around Clint Howard as I would Harrison Ford and all because of that gif :lol

That gif has so many double-meanings in this particular thread.

:exactly:

For example...

Maybe Disney will reconsider and hire back Roseanne as Kennedy’s replacement to run Lucasfilm...

Cue....

They can't fire her. Yeah, they slowly freeze her out and she "retires" after Ep IX. It'll be seven years by then, so won't have the whiff of an untimely departure. She will go out to pasture as the Rick McCallum of the ST.

They REALLY need someone who knows SW better. Fiege was no MCU super-fan, but he knew the universe well enough as a fan and was passionate about it. KK is not.

Smartest thing after Ep IX is to yeah, do a movie every two years and do RO type movies - a Fett-as-villain movie that's set right before ESB and a Jabba-as-villain movie set right before ROTJ. Slap in some sweaty unshaven underdogs led by a woman and we'll ker-ching our way to a billion with each one and everyone gets what they want.:lol

Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Everyone keeps saying Solo was a flop.....

Did it turn a profit? It definitely will. 101 million first weekend, combine future sales with good word of mouth will make it last longer at the box office. Plus Blu Ray, rental and streaming....

They will turn a profit. I find it hard to believe the budget was anywhere near the reported 250 million which I doubt even with reshoots.

Its not what they want of course, but I doubt it sullys any plans.

We have to see how the next few weeks go, and if word of mouth gives a longer life to this as we get into actual summer movie season....kids are still in school.

Disappointed maybe , but Disney knows how to make a buck, and they will continue with SW ......

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

From the article:

"While I’m not going to argue that overseas audiences are drawn to big movies starring women and minorities more than standard white guy “he’s the special” hero’s journeys, they sure don’t seem to find them repelling either."

"Did Solo: A Star Wars Story disappoint because it had a white male lead? Would that it were so simple! You can throw a whole bunch of recent “starring a white male lead” blockbuster releases at me without even dipping into comic book superheroes, like The Revenant, Dunkirk, Kong: Skull Island and Ready Player One."

"Not every film starring a young white male lead is doomed to struggle overseas (Kingsman: The Secret Service). Not every female-led or minority-centric biggie is going to kick butt here (Pacific Rim: Uprising) and abroad (Ghost in the Shell). Yet, there is enough evidence to suggest that it doesn’t hurt to have your movie centered on a racial minority or a woman (of any color)."

"In the end, Solo had little to offer that was fresh and had little to sell beyond being a movie that happened to be part of the Star Wars universe. But in 2018, an event movie featuring a generic white guy in the lead is that much less of an event movie, and merely being a big-budget fantasy spectacle isn’t enough. Giving certain demographics, a still too rare opportunity to root for heroes that look like them can help create demographically-specific event movies. Thus, from a certain point of view, white male movie stars may indeed be box office poison."

In other words, having a white male lead doesn't prevent people from attending a film. However, if you're going to rely on hacky genre fiction where there's no innovation, you really need a selling point beyond "just another sci fi movie" or "just another superhero movie". Can hacks afford not to use identity politics as a selling point?

I have a better idea: maybe audiences don't need to be patronized with hacky writing in the first place. Maybe if a franchise has consistently good storytelling, dialogue, character development and design, people will throw money at you regardless as to what the protagonist looks like. Instead, the ****** who wrote this article is concerned with sustaining a business model that relies on hack writing. His answer? Race bating.

Someone remind me, why do film critics exist in the first place?

Solo will be a $100-150m write-down for Disney. Not the baths that John Carter and Lone Ranger were (similar $250m+ budgets) but in that general department.

The main issue is that SW is a 50/50 property domestic/overseas meaning it's more popular in the U.S. than overseas - most major franchises are the reverse (big movies that do only $150m in the U.S. can make say $500m overseas.)
