Actually, I bet a lot of collectors of this line are avid dinosaur fans rather than being fans of SSC generally and the paint apps aren't so much of a problem to them.
Even though I do agree that it would be much better if there was some improvement with the paint apps, the production pieces are far from being horrible (unless for someone extremely nitpicky or can't tolerate even the slightest imperfection....well, it depends on one's preference but anyways) and I see no point on discouraging ppl who are into this line. As for the folks that are willing to shed a lot of $$$, they can always have their pieces re-painted by professional artists.

How is it any different from someone talking about how "great" their piece is all the time? Pretty much everyone in this thread repeat themselves more times than I ever have. This whole thread drools all over these pieces every time someone posts pictures of a new one. My comments on each new piece I see are usually the same because all the paint apps are STILL usually the same. I'll change my tone when I see decent paint job.

Chris

To some extent, I agree. He is not posting to bring anybody down, but because he has a true love for dinosaurs in general, as I have. Now giving Sideshow credit for at least recruiting some of the best paleo artists out there, the paint apps are simply not doing these pieces justice. SS IS COMING UP SHORT, when they had the chance to raise the bar to a whole new level for this genre, which I expected they would. Besides, even David Krentz, one of the best paleo sculptors in the world, actually commented that he was disappointed with the final paint apps! And as far as sub-par paint apps are concerned, Sideshow seems to have this problem with many of their lines, & presently seem to be getting worse! Now if we as collectors simply turn a blind eye to this, Sideshow will have no reason to improve or change their QC policies, & we all stand to lose. As for having these pieces repainted by pros? Simply out of the question! At these prices, I expect Sideshow to come to the plate, & listen to many of the complaints, & simply fix the problem; as they've achieved in so many of their past releases.

The worst thing anyone could do to a company is not buy the products...how many of us are willing to actually not buy that new Apatosaurus to make a point ?

As I posted before..the paint is not bad enough on any current piece to stop me from buying them...yes I would like more color..maybe a diff pattern but for the price I will live it. Maybe someday I will get them re-painted when I have plenty of extra cash. ..I also think replacing the painted on eyes with tiny glass ones would be better..but I can't do it right now either.

I would rate the paint work on these as decent..not outstanding really..but at least decent enough.

I mentioned cost of painting before..if one were have any dinosaur in this line bought, built, and painted say as a kit it would cost at least another 200.00 . If Sideshow upped the paint jobs but as a result it took longer and cost another 1-200.00 would we be willing to do it ? Some concessions need to me made to appease the majority...that's business. It comes down to whether or not you personally think something is worth it. Paint can be fixed..we might not like the cost and trouble but it can be done. It's all up to the individual..some of us are blown away, some are content, others dislike it.

I know I for one, am not willing to give up Sideshow's Apatosaurus just to prove a point. I've got two amazing Shane Foulkes pieces built, and painted up by one of the best in the paleo art business. Yes, the paint apps on these are far superior, but that also comes with a cost. Even though I have these two pieces, with more on the horizon, I still love the Sideshow pieces. Hell, i'm saving up for the be all end all Apatosaurus maquette, but i'm still purchasing Sideshows aswell.

It's not like I wouldn't like to see better paint apps, but I truly believe some of you are blowing things out of proportion.

Lastly, I belive it to be somewhat of an insult, to think a poorly skilled/paid Chinese worker can do just as good a job as Steve Riojas, Martin Garrett, Shane Foulkes, etc. Not that anyone ment that of course. :D

All I'm saying is $20 mass produced toy / $300 Limited Edition Collectible Statue. It's fine if you're happy with your dinos, no one is saying you shouldn't be. But be honest, Sideshow could and really SHOULD be doing better paint apps on these expensive collectibles. Making excuses for them isn't helping anyone except Sideshow executives.

The Stego pic is from this guys site: h__p://hkhollinstone.blogspot.com/
Some really beautiful photos there.

Would love to see pics of your Shane Foulkes pieces. Especially his Spino (1 or 2) , which I consider to be way superior to Sideshow's.

I still don't see it..what exactly looks better on that Stego ? I have it and the Sideshow Spino..sitting them near each other I just don't see the issue. The details seem a tiny bit finner on the Stego..but it's smaller and more intricate, the colors are different..like they went with a lighter underbelly..but not much else.

Really ? Not to down Shane at all..I love his work..that fantastic Mosasaur and 1/1 Stego infant for example..just incredible !

I was going to get the first Spino before Sideshow's came out...but it was incorrect and needed fixing..I'm not sure he ever did though. His 2nd was orig a JP custom piece but the deal fell through or so I heard and he altered it into a correct one...but you can still see the JP3 influence in it.

Here's some of Martin's work :

Both of these are built and painted up by the awesome Steve Riojas. I just wish I could afford his 1:1 Parasaurolophus adult. :(

I think one thing people must also realize, is that as much as we want the Diosauria pieces to have these kind of paint jobs, there just aren't enough talented artists out there. If Sideshow's factories were filled with clones of Steve Riojas, Martin Garrett, and Shane Foulkes, noone would ever complain. ;) Unfortunately that's not the case. :(

Btw, this is Sarah. :D

Can someone specifically point out the flaws in the Spino, because I really don't see any problems.

For those of you who feel that Sideshow is not doing an adequate job for the price they charge, you are more than welcome to that opinion. I can't criticize you for having really high standards, but I think you have unrealistic expectations. I think this figures are excellent.

Great pics, & super paint apps, thank you. But I don't agree that the chinese workers are unable to achieve a higher quality finish to their paint apps. They have achieved excellent results in past releases, (Uruk-Hai Berserker PF quickly comes to mind), as well as many others. I feel it's more a question of possibly choosing the right factory to do the work, & following-up on QC issues & policies. Don't expect them to duplicate the great Steve R., but they should be able to come damn close.

I own the Uruk-Hai Berserker aswell, and while it is a very nice statue, the paint apps don't come close to my Stegosaurus. I know one person even had their Berserker repainted, as they didn't like the paint apps.

I'm not trying to argue, but you really have to look at these pieces in person, to fully appreciate the difference in quality to a Sideshow piece.:peace
