I've generally been ok with the paint apps but some of the drybrushing looks a bit rushed on the new Spino.

I was hoping with such low runs they might be able to maintain a consistently higher quality, but I'm starting to wonder now. The upcoming Pterodactyl will be a good test.

I think a lot of you folks might be surprised about the workers who actually do the paintings of the production pieces in China (got my source from someone who actually worked with these kind of ppl).... To be more specific, most of the painters barely learned to paint b4 they even got hired (learning professional art itself is extremely costly for ppl over there).
Anyways, I do agree that considering the amount of $$$ SS charges for these pieces, they definately need improvement and should hire more professionally trained painters for the production pieces.

As for the paint apps of the JP dio and Dinosauria pieces, I think it is quite evident that the Dinosauria pieces have significantly better paint jobs... but I do regret selling my JP dio (and all the Horizon JP kits I used to own) :(

You could always pay to have it repainted..and in your own color scheme. There are artists who would do it..some would even replace the eyes with glass ones for you.

Really I've said it before and I'll say it again.. take the Allo VS Camara Dio for example..a piece that big in resin by any paleo artist is going to run you around 300.00 bucks...add on the cost of cleaning, building, painting and all the materials it takes to accomplish all of that and your looking at investment of around 4-500.00 total..plus time spent to achieve it.

Now look at the cost of a fully built, paint, and mostly ready to go piece from Sideshow : 294.99 You save about 1-200.00 is that worth a " pretty good " paint job ? Like I said if not..you can pay the difference to several artists out there to make your piece superior.

Maybe its because I don't have any eye for detail, but unless I'm examining the pieces closely I don't find that the paint jobs have obvious flaws. And personally, once I do a once over to make sure it is not broken etc I don't examine my figures that closely and neither do the guests who look at my collection.

IMO, every single piece that I ordered from this line that showed up to my door looked like junk. Like I said before, the sculpts were awesome...but the paint apps were horrible.

SS should introduce a new program where they give the customer an option to have their piece painted in the US by pro painters to match the proto EXACTLY (for an obviously higher premium)...OR...chose to order a piece painted in china for their going price. If they offered something like that I would be all over this line....I dont care if I had to pay $500+ per piece. At least I have the option.

:goodpost::exactly: Same thing i do

Not to be trolling or anything but seriously. The paint on the Camarasaurus dio wasn't very good. My $20 Papo figs have better paint apps than the Dinosauria and Jurassic Park pieces. It's really hard justifying the price of these when you compare them to something so much cheaper that kinda looks better. I really wanted to love the Cam vs Allo dio but for $300 the paint app was just unacceptable. These NEED to look like high end collectibles, not badly painted mass produced toys. Put them next to Paposauruses, SW Battle Troll or Weta Kong vs V-Rex and you'll see what I mean. SS needs to step up in the paint department because it's a shame seeing such awesome sculpts get such poor finishing treatments.

That said I still love my faux bronze Dinosauria pieces. The FB treatment really shows off the sculpts which are this lines strong point.

Sorry for ranting.
:exactly::goodpost: I agree completely with your 'rant'. Sadly I started collecting the painted versions, but had to stop due to the poor paint apps; which are 'destroying' the fine details of these beautifully sculpted pieces. As for the faux bronze versions, I did not have the foresight to anticipate their release.:(:gah:. But would love to see detailed pics of the Faux Bronze versions. Have any been posted yet?

I haven't seen pics by anyone that bought the faux bronze versions.

Seriously..you could easily get your pieces re-painted if you have the means...even if you wanted to make your current ones faux bronze..it doesn't take much. I've painted a couple bronze pieces in the past by just picking up what I need from Walmart. ;)

I posted this a while back. Not the best lighting and my camera sucks, but here ya go. The FB ones are all still readily available, probably cause I'm the only one buying them. I'm hoping they do the Cam Vs Allo in FB, because I absolutely love the sculpt I just couldn't get over the paint. :(

Thanks for the pic. It looks great, having a classic bronze sculpt look, which allows us to appreciate the fine details without getting hung-up on the poor paint apps. May have to go this route.

Just got my Spino in !!! She's awesomely HUGE ! and looks more than a match for the Rex sad to say. The paint on her looks to match the prototype almost 100% ..and the dimness I see might just be improper lighting.

My only complaint is like others mentioned..the foot doesn't go all the way into the base..it's like the hole is too shallow or the pin too long. It's imperceptible though so I won't bother with it.

..I got # 25 out of 350 ... how's that for luck.. again !! ;D

Excuse me who are you?....

Just because I dont collect the line anymore doesnt mean I cant post my opinion on new pieces in the line. Move along newbie...:wave

Chris

Of course it doesn't mean you can't, but it does raise the question of why you keep bringing it up. Not criticism, just curiosity.

How is it any different from someone talking about how "great" their piece is all the time? Pretty much everyone in this thread repeat themselves more times than I ever have. This whole thread drools all over these pieces every time someone posts pictures of a new one. My comments on each new piece I see are usually the same because all the paint apps are STILL usually the same. I'll change my tone when I see decent paint job.

Chris

Because the negative comments get annoying. Still, we gotta give you credit, you're not a troll about it.

i don't know how you gauge someone as being a newbie. number of posts maybe? then that's just so shallow of you. i know when i should say something to make point, and when to say something just annoy everyone else in this thread. what you're saying is no longer coming from a rational point of view of an ordinary collector. this thing you have against this dinosauria line has gone beyond hatred, that you just can't accept anything positive anyone has to say about the pieces that they have, so you just have to lambast the line with your statements, which just makes me wonder... you're no longer buying pieces from the line, sideshow is no longer getting any money from you, which makes them no longer answerable to any of your whining if ever so it's true that these have no decent paintjob, so why are you still affected everytime a new dinosauria piece comes out? hmmm...
