I like it..and honestly the price doesnt really bother me. I mean I spend $300 a month on wine alone :)

Edit: Just got to read the Spino's backstory. It should be called "The One That Got Away."

As to the spines on the sail, I would say it's not for aesthetic reasons, but for purposes of practicality to avoid damage in shipping that we don't see those features. That and I think it might have been a bit of overkill if they were overly large and not greater in size than minor dermal protrusions the likes of which we see on the Carno.

That's exactly what I wanted..just smaller spines sort of like the Carno, maybe even smaller to keep the flow even...nothing big or oppressive at all. I'm actually surprised they went with a spiney-look at all..fragility is one big reason it's been surmised we don't see these beautiful additions to many toys, models or sculptures. I applaud Sideshow for taking the leap..but I wish they could jumped just a bit farther you know ?

In terms of scarring on the Spino, I imagine they are reticent to use a profusion of scars in such a way as to end up duplicating a feature present in other pieces already - the T.rex and Allos. Not that we shouldn't have some scarring, and we very well may, but not as great an amount in the other theropods. A thrashing fish could cause some damage, but not nearly as much as the prey items which the other two aforementioned theropods would have taken. Fish are naturally streamlined for efficiency in an aquatic environ, so as long as an animal as large as the spino pins the fish's head, damage should be fairly minimal.

Your going to see this argument from me a lot.. I just don't like pristine dinosaurs as much as the one that look " lived "..I never even draw a dino without some form of scarring or wound unless it's a hatchling. For the spino some little nicks here or there painted darker to show they were old, maybe a couple of old tooth holes from a croc on one toe..even it was one little scar under or above and eye..to show maybe how when he/she was younger they were almost blinded..risk and chance are a bit part of learning and nature itself. I also love the creativity aspect of the artist involved.

Perhaps in other dinosaur collectible lines provided by other companies busts may have a tendency to be more expensive, but this trend is actually reverse with Sideshow. If you look at the Marvel pieces, for example, the legendary scale busts are always comparable in price or significantly cheaper (>=$100) than the dioramas in the same collectible line. If anything, legendary scale busts have the potential to be more affordable and capture more cranial detail in a new and exciting format for the line. I would just like to have something new and different rather than waiting to see if we'll get a diorama or maquette, both of which consistently tend to be on the higher price mark.

Human heads are a lot smaller at 1/1 though than many dinosaurs..;D

Joking aside I would love to have a Dilophosaurus or hadrosaur bust display but I can't imagine the price being too cheap and I don't know if I would prefer a wall mount or a desktop..things fall off of walls a lot around here.. :/ I do like they are thinking in other directions..I've mentioned I would like to see some small 1/1 scale dinos..like a Compy or Archeopteryx...they would about the same size or smaller than the Spino.

I'm assuming that's the reason for the lunging pose and the look of " Oh crap !! " that's on his face eh ? ;D

Her face. Meaning we'll soon see a more vibrantly colored male Spinosaurus next year. LoL.

Nice, still need to wait until it's available for pre-order and also to get provided with the details.

Anyways, just talked with some local retailers about this and they said that they fixed the price of this maquette to $860...I'm glad that it didn't exceed $900.... :cuckoo:

..better not...:thud:

...unless it's part of smaller dio.. ;)

Thank god for small favors I guess..heh heh If it was even 500.00 I highly doubt I would be in for it..first piece I would miss but nothing I could do about it y'know ? :/

The maquette shares a surprising degree of anatomical similarity to Felipe Elias' recent "Swimming Spinosaurus" piece, sporting cervical and caudal spines only, entirely absent on the sail. The lack of spiney protrusions along the spine isn't an aesthetic I'm willing to quibble over, but it's all left to subjective preference in that regard.

I thought a couple healed bite marks from a mosasaur or shark would have been a nice touch. Hard to say what details will be better evidenced on closer inspection, though it seems unlikely McVey would skimp in that regard. I'm quite the proponent for depicting dinosaurs with a degree of scarring to reflect the word in which they lived; as I've mentioned numerous times, unscathed fauna of sizable proportions simply doesn't exist. The natural world is cruel and they don the proof upon their torsos. Agree with you that I'm hoping we see that to at least some small extent on the maquette.

Their 1:1 scale maquettes are quite pricey. LSB's are dramatically cheaper, absolutely jam-packed with detail, and fairly easy to display with an eye to space economy.

I think you and I have also discussed those two particular animals as ideal examples to be constructed in 1:1. I personally like the idea of having a tiny perched Compsognathus or Archaeopteryx, head cocked and observing those who enter my office. The mind is swimming with possibilities. LSB's would be my first hope, though.

$400-450 is even pushing it a bit. It would have to be an animal of particular interest to me in order for me to invest that much and indulge myself.

Woah... I really like the look of this, but I seriously do not have the room to display it. :( Dunno what to doooooo.

Agreed on the spines on the spine..would have been neat but as I've before said I'm prone to nitpick...heh heh

Nice catch on the art..it does look a lot like his swimming spino piece :

Wish McVey had also added some small throat wattles as well... ;)

It certainly sounds like we are going to get something in vein of what you are looking for..just hope it turns out really well...I'd love to have an Allo bust like the one in the Lazendorf collection.

Agreed as well...Sideshow needs to do it's best to stay within it's cap if not a 50-100.00 below it if possible for me to keep buying them all...and not make a year's worth of items all 300.00 a piece at the same time..vary it up a bit...for the sake of our wallets eh ? ;)

Exactly.

I do have a feeling that the prices of newer pieces are constantly going up and if they continue to do that, they'll probably lose some loyal customers dedicated to the Dinosauria line....

If it continues I'm sure there will be a drop off of sorts..like I will have to start picking and choosing pieces whereas I was doing good getting each one as of now. Some pieces may sink while others swim...I prefer they all just stayed on the boat.. ;)

That's begun to happen in my camp. I've already canceled the Proto/Raptor dio, and had to make the Cama/Allo order into a Flexpay. This one will have to be Flexed as well. And everything else will be pushed aside to make room for that Stegosaurus. (Yes, I capitalize all of my dinosaur names. :) )

I have officially dropped out of this line. Much as I like the Spino and agree that it is an awesome piece, IMHO $300 a piece (before shipping) is simply too much to pay for a relatively "small" item.

I wouldn't mind dropping $300 to $500 for a Premium Format Figure but definitely not a smaller Maquette for which SSC don't even have to pay license fees.

In a way, I was kind of spot-on when I earlier predicted that the Spino may cost between $300 to $350. I now ventured to predict that the Stego (with eggs and baby Stego?) will probably cost at least $320 to $350.

All said, the Spino Maquette is still awesome in my opinion. Just too bad for me that I couldn't justify spending so much money on it. Guess I'll just have to rely on the eventual in-hand pictures from you guys and "enjoy" this beautiful maquette on my computer screen. :)

All this talk of swimming and boats. I have a great appreciation for these pieces, and the fact that I only purchase certain ones doesn't make me feel excluded or deprived in the slightest.

I'm sure I will probably begin to scale back as well and become more fastidious in regards to which pieces I purchase, likely eventually limiting to those animals I have the greatest passion for studying or for which economy of spacing shall allow. Bust I would accommodate, as well as some smaller pieces, but I'd say they need to shake up the line a little as opposed to just raising the price tag.

I've mentioned about busts a while back - nobody seemed to be interested in it, I guess SS figured it out. I think that busts will work well for this line, not too small not too big. this way they don't cost as much, you have a lot more space for display and you get more of a large variety of dinos that you would not ever see as a maquette or dio.

Ordered as well. I'm sticking with the maquettes so far. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the dios. I know I want both that are up for order, but I don't know if I'll actually be able to get either.

Oh damn, I forgot about my coupon. Maybe I'll use it on one of the upcoming dios. Or my reward points.
