Okay since there's so little new stuff to get excited about right now I fell back on an old standby: Rebuying old stuff, lol.
I tracked down the non-DNR 4K versions of SW 4K77 and ROTJ 4K83 and wow I wish I had gotten those in the first place. Especially ROTJ, the DNR version gave the actors an almost Predator blu-ray level of waxiness but no more! I finally feel like I have the "perfect" version of ROTJ to watch at home. Not only do all the textures look properly authentic but that light grain (which really isn't distracting at all, I think I was expecting ESB Grindhouse levels of grain but that just isn't the case, not even close) actually gives the entire movie a more "film-like" appearance, like you're actually watching it projected in a movie theater. Like I said, it's pretty much perfection IMO and I may have to never purchase that movie ever again.
The DNR in SW 4K77 never seemed as heavy handed as ROTJ for me but again just for the authenticity of the film experience I now prefer the non-DNR version of that movie as well. And now owning both versions I'm starting to think that the DNR process might have even tweaked the colors a bit because even the color correction seemed better with no DNR.
The green tint in some scenes of SW was most pronounced in the Falcon cockpit immediately after they leave Mos Eisley correct? Because that scene no longer had such a tint to my eye. If I was misremembering where the tint was most offensive please let me know and I'll do another comparison.
But regardless I absolutely 100% recommend the non-DNR versions of 4K77 and 4K83. The absolute best and most authentic restorations of the OT, and I can't freaking wait to see how ESB 4K80 turns out.
