It does look like he got his inspiration for the TLJ ending from Escape from L.A., the basic construction of the scene is very similar.

I'm not sure you can say he steals from the best because Escape from LA was a horrible movie.... maybe that's why TLJ was so horrible :lol

This probably belongs here:

As opined in the other thread, the setting is... meh.

I admit that seeing those shots doesn't excite me. But then neither did the early green screen shots of RDJ, Holland, and Pratt on the set of IW and that turned out to be the greatest cbm of all time so we'll just have to see.

Was the life debt ever mentioned in the OT? Can’t recall.

It’s more interesting IMO if it’s not a relationship of servitude. I thought SOLO did a great job w/ their origin.

Have to admit, I liked the Solo version too. But I woulda liked the life debt more (especially as it evolved into more of an equal partnership).

Wasn't mentioned in the OT but was pretty well established in background material. Same with Chewie's age, which Solo felt the need to reference.

If they had time to explore that evolution from servitude to partnership it might have been cool. But I doubt that would have survived the Twitter jury in any case.

Chewie's life debt was indeed pretty common vintage lore even if it was outside the actual films. However George tainted it by ascribing it to Jar Jar so I'm totally fine with "Solo" officially divorcing Chewie from any connection to Gungans. I loved how their initial meeting and growing bond played out on screen, in fact I don't know that I could have been any happier. I also liked that Kessel gave Chewie a chance to leave with other Wookiees or make the call to stay with Han. A nice little bit of narrative shorthand conveying that their partnership was on equal terms.

Really as I think about all the times that Han scolds Chewie in the OT I don't know that it'd sit well with me knowing that it was official that Chewie *had* to take it. Han walking a thin line with a buddy that was free to tell him to **** off or simply rip off his arms makes them more of an endearing team IMO, and it never hit me just how much until after thinking it through more thoroughly after watching "Solo" itself.
