With DNR!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's what I was thinking too but purists say the grain was part of the 77-83 experience so it should be no DNR. To me because it's on a TV/monitor it's different anyway (so that random speckling feels a bit off if it's not being projected on a screen) and I just want it clearer.

It is a thing that is definitely open for debate lol.

You want the best answer.....

If money is no object then get both!

That is the best snobby answer I can give from a purist standpoint.

DNR still gives you enough film grain to feel like you are doing the right thing in honor of unaltered SW because they did such an outstanding job applying it judiciously.

But going with NO DNR is so purist authentic it puts you right smack in the middle of grungy 1977 so much so you can almost smell the untrimmed porn and gum on the arm rest that?s how authentic it is lol

But there is so much grain you might even get placed on the government farming welfare subsidies list if you go that route.

Yes no harm in getting both versions. Hell just now I bought *two* of the 4K77 DNR versions just because I realize that these might be the last discs I ever buy.

But I'm sticking with DNR for my primary viewing because it isn't overdone like that one Predator blu-ray and I just want these to look as much like the awesome ALIEN and Blade Runner 4K's as possible. Star Wars of all films deserves no less.

Plus I still have the Silver Screen Edition if I want authentic non-DNR theater goodness complete with "cigarette burn" cue marks in the corners, lol. :yess:

Can I tell you i?m surprised just how good the 1080p version looks but I won?t be able to resist the authentic 4K one.

Yes when people start offering physical 4K discs I'll definitely pick those up too but it's so nice to not actually need them. Hell I just watched FOTR on blu-ray for the first time in years the other day and was surprised at how grainy the sky scenes looked. These new SW transfers are actually *better* than many official Triple A blu-ray releases. :rock

Khev

I wish you could have seen my face during the death star approach I truly was flabbergasted at the differences it has been that long for me.

Also seeing Han shooting first on my 80 inch in HD truly is the pinnacle of geek orgasm lol

Full HD can you believe it.

At the same time I was transported back to my childhood!

It just made me appreciate his true finale in TROS even more.

Yep now that the cantina is perfect again with him shooting first now we get to simply sit back and enjoy his future arc of him not only saving the day at Yavin but later inspiring his son (named after the guy sitting across the table from him :yess:) to help defeat the Emperor and save the girl once and for all. :rock

I prefer the lightsabers as they were originally done with the rotoscoping rather than the more perfect blades they do now. Makes them feel like and emery weapon and not a weightless baseball bat. Love these and I am glad JYE is enjoying them. Every fan needs to see these. I always liked the matte painting with painted soldiers in the emperor arrival scene. 8E84655E-890E-4B8F-9AEE-278D934A7EE2.jpg 638F6A2F-8E45-4979-9138-54A8FA0BEF7B.jpg 17C2768D-3106-483E-8CDB-75AEF5E2C384.jpg 4FAA73FF-C9AE-4932-9BE7-579708A10DDD.jpg

Big shout out to Khev, not sure when I would have found about about the 4K77 stuff if I had not stumbled into this thread and saw him talking about it!

I got the DNR version and it looks fantastic, seriously sharp as hell. It was a really fascinating watch. A lot of the scenes have a very different color tone than what I have ever seen before, and the brightness and darkness throughout is so wide a spectrum that it almost has a HDR quality to it. That might be my only real complaint, is that a lot of the dark scenes or costumes are TOO dark to see the details. Ive been watching my bonus disc DVD versions lately and obviously those versions are much more muted. Overall really loving it so far but I dont think it overtakes Harmys for me, I will probably keep both in rotation and put on whichever one I am in the mood for. This is almost like an authentic 1977 theater experience whereas the Harmys is what I imagine a modern, official restored release might look like.

I also found a couple of really fascinating videos on YouTube, one a comparison of this with the SS version, 2011 blu-ray, and DVD bonus disc versions. The other is pretty neat because it shows the painstaking frame-by-frame process they went through to clean up the print:

Here are a couple screenshots from that comparison video that show what Im talking about as far as color/brightness differences:

While I have never seen the Harmy versions I definitely prefer the being transported to 77/83 feelings I get from these especially since the restoration is in proper HD so I see it as having the best of both worlds based off what I have read about Harmy.

Glad I helped you stumble upon these! :rock (since I literally can't take any more credit than that, lol)

I assume you mean HDR and not DNR? If so I agree, especially during the daylight Endor scenes in Jedi. The contrast between the bright sunny leaves with the inky black shadows is insane (in a good way IMO.)

I hear you about Harmy still being viable alternatives. It might come down to how much still sticks out when you watch them. For instance I'm so glad that he got rid of the CGI and dialogue revisions but since I had long memorized even things like individual laserblasts the fact that he left all the SE lasers on his versions is something that I still notice. Nothing major like the stupid song in Jabba's palace but it is still something that slightly takes me out of the movies.

For all who just received SW 4K77 and ROTJ 4K83 I still strongly recommend you get Harmy's ESB just so that you have a complete trilogy until ESB 4K80 is done. Sure he uses the cleaned up SE (color corrected of course) for most of the movie but it's so worth it to have Fett's correct voice back and those horrible Vader shuttle scenes removed.

And I only liked 50% of TROS lol

But I don?t blame you for forgetting JAWS he never posts in the movie section anymore he just hangs out in those snobby polystone threads lol

:lol

I dont want to talk about the film anymore because reading about it and talking about it keeps everything fresh in my head... I want to forget a bit so I have more fun with it on Home video.

PLUS I tried getting people to talk about Doctor Sleep again but you bastards wont watch it :lol

And I am a snob :)

Khev.....

I am in shock!

I am in awe!

I haven?t watched unaltered SW straight thru in over 20 + years and that was in VHS...over 20 years dude!

This restoration left me speechless truly speechless.

The battle of Yavin will absolutely shock those who have only seen the SE.

I?m OG and I was floored with the effects and the flow of the battle!

Don?t even get me started on the freaking awesome menus and transfers!

The chapter stops are a thing of perfection.

For anyone who believes in their heart that they are fans of SW drop what you are doing and buy these immediately there is no higher form of SW perfection.

If Disney ever releases the unaltered in 4K of course I will immediately buy them BUT if they don?t I am fully content owning these as my go to SW for the rest of my fortunate life.

Perfection acheived.

It's truly mind blowing that the "updated" CGI effects are now so dated that the original practical effects *literally outclass them.* :thud:

Yes trench run is so much more edge of your seat and immersive now that you can just invest in the drama and visuals without the jarring distractions.

Oh man I'm so glad you got these, it literally is going home again and it just shows how much we've been deprived over the years. Wait till you watch Jedi which is an even better transfer. :duff

Watching star wars now and it is so clear and impressive in 4K. Love it. Glad to have these for the big screen.

Oh man... You are all getting me excited to get these..

Thanks Khev for the info!!!!

Yeah HDR lol, I edited my post to fix that. And yeah, for me the Fett voice change in ESB is the single most unforgivable change in the trilogy. It bother me more than Greedo, CGI Jabba, or dumb song changes in ROTJ. Like, that sinister voice is almost his entire character in that movie.

So absolutely 100% agreed. Nothing taints the OT like that disgraceful revision IMO.

I agree with the Harmy Empire. Even though it really had the least amount of tweaks Fett's in the special editions bothered me. Fett led a hard life so his voice being different than Jango's makes sense. Harmy's are great but yes I too prefer a straight 4k copy of the theatrical with the original effects. Star Wars was a pioneer for special effects and needs to be untainted to be appreciated.

Never understood George's stubbornness on the issue of the theatrical Cuts VS his new edits. Make whatever new cuts you want but continue to preserve the theatricals. You may be embarrassed by them or whatever, but your fans clearly aren't.

The funny thing with Harmy ESB is that now that I've had that version since 2011 I've really grown accustomed to enjoying Fett's original voice with non-transparent snowspeeders so part of me wonders if it will be hard to go back to the transparencies. Probably not but we'll see.

Worst case scenario I keep ESB 4K80 for archival and nostalgia purposes with Harmy as my default go to for viewing. Then again the TN1 version will be 1080p or 4K compared to 720p until Harmy releases an update (which I'm sure he will after the official 4K discs hit.)

Yes the uptick in resolution makes a huge difference. I am noticing some things I never really focused in many movies with the 4K tv. The sound is also better on the new tvs and my soundbar works great especially on older movies. The sound in a lot of the newer movies seems to come from the front channels rather than all of the other channels especially Disney movies. These sound great and really do look amazing. I can't wait to see Raiders of the lost Ark next year for its 40th anniversary in 4K. Everyone that is getting these are in for a special treat. I need to watch 89 Batman in 4K even though I read that a lot of people didn't like the color timing on it.
