Yes his death was confusing when seeing for the first time for sure. He did seem to expend *a lot* of his final energy just climbing back up onto that damn rock, lol. Which then led to him doing a lot of disappearing within just a couple moments of one another. Now if RJ *really* wanted to subvert expectations then when Luke climbed onto the rock they would have cut to him looking all trim and clean, holding a cup of cocoa on a posh balcony in Coruscant, eyes closed while he projected himself as a washed up old man on Ahch-To, which was projecting *another* projection onto Crait, lol.

Then the Ahch-To projection could have been all "See you 'round sunset."

Sun: "NOOOOOOO!"

I always assumed it was the projection that killed him.. I mean he looks so beat up and exhausted just to get back up on the rock.

Maybe I am just misremembering what I thought his death was back then and have just accepted the Force projection theory as canon. :lol

Oh it was definitely the projection that killed him as Kylo had previously foreshadowed that if Rey had tried to project herself across the galaxy to speak to him for even a few moments that "the effort alone would kill you."

It was actually pretty awesome that he was performing a double mastery of the Force since he was simultaneously levitating himself for like 20 minutes (and we've seen how exhausting simply levitating something for just a few moments can be even for Master Yoda) in order to give his physical body full sensory deprivation so that he could more fully concentrate on how his projection interacted with Crait.

That's an elegant interpretation of his actions but unless you're actually quoting RJ I think you're giving him way too much credit. :lol

No, not quoting RJ just going by the fact that he was shown to not just be projecting himself but levitating his physical body while projecting his mind. I don't think it's a stretch to assume that the two actions are connected, or that the former was necessary for the latter to be fully realized.

While we are discussing weird force abilities that shouldn't be in the Star Wars universe, will Rey Skywalker ever be arrested for force peeping in on Kylo while he was changing?

IDK, that sounds as if Force projections would have to behave like Starkiller death rays. Does that mean Force refraction is another Jedi skill that RJ introduced? :lol

It depends on the projection, lol.

Ok, gotta ask who this is. I thought it was Felicity Jones at first, but don't think so. I'm....intrigued to know :)

I agree, but I do think it's a stretch to believe RJ actually thought of it. :lol

Sorry Buff have to disagree there

When it comes to narrative story telling RJ is very talented

Only when it involves social media fan interactionsis does he turn into a big dummy lol

I think it might've actually been *triple* mastery. I still believe the intent might've been that Luke was helping Rey lift the rocks. That's how I interpret her look of surprise and confusion; otherwise, why would RJ have her react that way when she opens her eyes? She's breaking concentration just to even have that reaction, and yet the rocks are all still floating. And we saw in ESB what happens to floating rocks when you lose concentration. :lol

The video below is the full scene, but the moment that I'm talking about is when Rey opens her eyes. Her reaction goes on for a few seconds. I guess it could be that she's marveling at what she's capable of, but I'm not so sure. I think there was something else being suggested.

I don't know man... TLJ's narrative is a bit of a mess IMHO.
On the one hand it is not consistent in its tone, or at least all the "jokes" felt clumsy and ill-timed within the movie (momma jokes in the middle of an attack? squirting Finn during a mad escape for their lives?). On the other hand, it has subplots and side characters that add nothing to the story (Banto Bight? DJ?). It also suffers from some poorly executed "climaxes" and action sequences (Finn vs. Phasma, Rey appearing inside the Falcon after the fight with Kylo and Snoke, Rose's "rescue" of Finn)...
So, no... I don't think RJ did a good job in TLJ, not by some light-years... Other movies, sure, but TLJ is a mess.

:exactly: :lecture

In TROS the rocks fall as soon as she breaks concentration

You do realize that just because you personally don't like it doesn't mean there wasn't a worthy narrative purpose, right?

In RJ's own words (I took this pic from the art book), here he explains what DJ's purpose was, and the larger reason for the Canto Bight excursion (which I myself am not a fan of, but can still recognize the narrative value).

BTW, Finn with the leaking bacta suit wasn't "during a mad escape for their lives." It was after Poe had docked in the hangar and the Resistance had presumably escaped for good after jumping to hyperspace.

I don't remember her lifting rocks in TROS. What was the scene?

EDIT: Nevermind. I remember now; when she was levitating in the opening scene. Thanks for pointing that out about the concentration aspect. :duff

Yep. When it comes to lore he's much more well versed than the average fan who grew up with the PT.

Projection has been a part of SW for more than 40 years. We've seen it performed by both the dead:

And the living:

Ooh I really like that take and jye's right the rocks don't fall unlike when she's levitating with the boulders at the beginning of TROS trying to call the Jedi and "they're not with me" so she breaks concentration and the rocks immediately fall.

Nice catch for that scene in TLJ ajp! :rock
