Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

That's what's so frustrating about that film - despite the CG elvis monkeys, the fire ants that eat people down to the bone in seconds and build cheerleader pyramids to go after people on high, despite the aliens, the fridge, the lack of a plot, the awkward, no-passion love scenes, the "make-big-trouble-for-moose-and-squirrel" villain, Shia LeDouche and the crotch-shot jokes (although watching him get whacked in the jewels over and over did have a sadistic appeal!), this movie showed that there was still potential. Ford still has charisma as Ford and can carry off the action (within reason). Marion would have been great if she had a purpose for being there (I even liked the wedding scene at the end). Even the era worked for Jones - Communists instead of Nazis, that's fine. A younger character to take over the whip? Sure, but not SHIA. :monkey4

Someone on the boards once mentioned an earlier screenplay for Indy IV that actually acknowledged the passage of time. The movie opened up with an older Indy, who had holed up at the University and become "Professor Jones" full-time, hiding away from his former life and adopting his father's fuddy duddy ways. The scene is a parody of the fertility idol scene, played out in the university library, with Indy looking a bit of the fool. He then gets swept up into the main adventure of the movie, rediscovers his mojo and how much fun it was to be Indiana freakin' Jones, and away we go! :whip

If you were to chop up KOTCS into the various scenes that worked on their own, you could see how they could be incorporated into such a film. University intro (mini stand-alone adventure that has little to do with main storyline, in the tradition of the other films), Mutt (as played by a good actor) shows up at the University, exposition, exposition, then the scene at the University with the KGB, Mutt, Indy and the motorcycle, some other stuff that introduces Mac and sets up the scene at area 51 (with a better villain), which goes up to the rocket sled coming to a stop, then on to an adventure about finding Atlantis and saving Marion's bacon. Okay, maybe not exactly as filmed, but the flavor of those scenes. It could have worked.

Likewise, I hope Episode VII acknowledges the elephant in the room and addresses the passage of time. These are not the Han, Luke, and Leia of our youths, nor should we expect them to be, but they can be used for good effect for the sake of the overall story.
Yeah, good points man. :)

Lightning striking twice - let alone multiple times, is rare. Having great intentions about reigniting a franchise is one thing, but actually delivering.. well. :lol

Disney seem to have all the talent & resources available now, to do SW the proper justice. They've also got the past 35 years as a guide basically, for what to do.. & not. As you say, the fab three should be there to ground the new series - not to dominate it, & pave the way for the new blood to take over.

There's a lot riding on all of this. :lol

I like how J.J Abrams said he turned down the chance to direct the next star wars out of respect for trek, i doubt he even got asked to direct lol.

Jedi Master Skywalker becomes aware of a plot to kill high ranking leaders of the New Republic, including Leia. Suspecting this to be a prelude to war he makes the difficult decision to break the training of his Jedi students. Too ill to make the journey alone, he takes along his most promising pupil(s). "We must go first to Corellia. There's only one man who can get us to Coruscant on time. His name is Han Solo..."

Agreed Nam, some people love J.J Abrams and swear he's a genius i have not seen 1 of his movies i liked

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I think the books had it right in her not focusing on her Jedi training much. She was a idealistic politician in the OT who hoped to restore a just galactic government and that would take a lot of time and effort. I see her becoming the new Supreme Chancellor of the New Republic before I see her becoming a Jedi Master.
I disagree. Padme was the idealistic. Leia was the rebel.

The only time Leia was ever a politician in the OT was ANH, and even then they focused more on her as a princess than as a senator. The rest of the trilogy she was pretty much a high ranking military leader, with ROTJ setting her character up to follow her father and brother's footsteps in learning the ways of the force. There was nothing ever suggesting she would go back to politics.

Her home planet was blown up and she was branded a traitor. She was done with politics so long as the Empire was in charge. We've never seen her in post-ROTJ life. Her revolutionary days are done, she's likely going to go back to her first calling.

Wow it sounds like to some that JJ is the new Nolan...I cant wait for the word Abramcompo0ops to come out...LOL...My only beef with the last ST film was the Spock/Uhura romance and that the ship did not look like the TOS version and that the interior looked all white and reminded me of a hospital...otherwise a good film

Except ROTJ was setting her up to become a Jedi. Luke even outright stated she would one day learn the ways of the Force. That was the direction her character was headed. The movie made no mention of her going back to politics over becoming a Jedi.

Going from Senator to Rebel Leader to Jedi develops her character and takes her on a journey. Ignoring what ROTJ set up just to make her a carbon copy of Padme isn't character development, its taking a massive step backwards. Leia and Padme may have once shared the same occupation but they are far from the same character.

2 words why JJ Abrams would have me worried if he got the job.....Super 8

I think a lot of people can't seem to grasp the reallity that Luke trains Leia, then Luke and Leia each take an apprentice and the Jedi order multiplies so by the time we get to Episode VII there could be between 10 to 16 Jedi. At the end of RotJ the only Force-Sensitive person he knows of is Leia, does Luke have the time to journey round the galaxy in search for a pupil? Theres plenty of political types that can run the galaxy, Mon Mothma, Garm Bel Ibis and Jan Dodonna.

Going off the promos, everybody in Star Trek has apparently ditched phasers in favor of pistols... and they're wearing trenchcoats. I enjoyed the reboot, but this? This is... :cuckoo: :lol

Star Trek Reloaded. The next one will be Star Trek Revolutions.

I think it looks very 60's SciFi. Very Ray Bradburry. I like the looks of it so far.
