Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

James Cameron, Matthew Vaugn and Zach Snyder would be my picks

:yuck

Instead of stealing the plot for "Pocahontas" like he did for "Avatar", maybe he could borrow the plot from, say, "The Princess and the Frog" for his Star Wars outing! :lol

They've already introduced the perfect candidate for the frog on the Clone Wars this season! And I think we all know who the Princess would be...

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Very excited for Abrams taking on Star Wars!!!! I really believe he will capture the fun, the adventure, and the heart of the originals. After Abrams, I would pick Ben Affleck and Rian Johnson. These two would bring a fresh approach to the films. Affleck could handle the darkness possibly for episode 8 and Rian Johnson could bring his unique voice and character interaction for 9. Disney and Kathleen Kennedy are doing a phenomenal job so far. The talent they have put in place assures us of quality filmmaking.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

J.J. Abrams = TV version of Zack Snyder. Thanks but no thanks.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

No. Not really. They got lucky with the OT. Pt works, the story feels connected, it's just not as good as the OT.

I know, lets hire Zach Snyder for part two, and Tim Burton for three. and let Quentin Tarantino do four, and Michael Bay Direct number 5.

That would be a disjointed mess.

My point is , Each director is going to bring their own style, and touches to a film. This CAN work, or it CAN backfire.

THAT'S my concern. directors with such varied styles, that things don;t work like they should for reasons of story.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

SW OT wasn't a disjointed mess.

Harry Potter wasn't a disjointed mess.

Marvel Phase I wasn't a disjointed mess.

Alien and Aliens together aren't a disjointed mess.

Etc.

In fact we've seen more cases of the same director screwing the pooch in the third act of a trilogy more often than those with different directors.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Then, start watching again seriously, there is a new arc unfolding that is promising to be killer!!! Just do it!

Just watched the newest episode. Ha ha, "killer" is right. ;) Nice to see something actually HAPPEN on this show. Pretty cool finale.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Old batman IS a disjointed mess.

Superman is a disjointed mess.

it CAN go either way. It's a minor concern, but my point is, the wrong director CAN screw the pooch.

and yes, the same director can do it too,

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I see the name "Zack Snyder" coming up on a lot of peoples' wishlist. I love his work and truly admire him as a director, but I don't think I can see his visual style 'fitting' a Star Wars movie. Star Wars has a very distinct look and feel to it, there has been some slight variance over the years, but not much. It has to fit within certain parameters to look like part of the saga. If anything, I think one of the failings of the prequels was that, in many ways, it lost the "feel" of the Star Wars universe. It was too CG, too cutsie, too wooden. For many, TPM is cited as the best of the prequels, not because it had a terrific plot (God knows), but because there were more elements in that movie that felt like Star Wars - Jar Jar aside. I think Zack Snyder makes beautiful looking films, but I don't know that he's be right for Star Wars, any more than Ang Lee was a good choice for The Hulk...

I'd say the only time one director has maintained quality through three films in a series has been PJ and Nolan, and I might even be in the minority with regard to them.

Back to the Future III
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (and certainly KOTCS)
The SW Prequels
Spider-Man 3
The Karate Kid III

all sucked compared to what came before them. There are much fewer examples of same director series faring well than there are of those with alternating directors.

Hmm. The Last Crusade and Karate Kid III are actually my favorites in their respective series actually.

I'd agree that Peter Jackson maintained a consistency with his LOTR trilogy. Nolan...well, I personally don't like TDKR all that much. I can't call it crap but it just wasn't what I wanted to see.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is another one. An okay movie but again, far below MM and TRW. The only way I'd want Abrams to do all three is if he pulled a Peter Jackson and filmed them all at once.
