Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread
i would love to see the Mandalorians as the antagonists... with the galaxy in a state of flux even years after the Battle of Endor, the enormous planet sized armies of Mandalore invade the already weakened Coruscant and it's surrounding ties. what remains of the Empire and the Rebellion are no match for this race of countless warriors and the galaxy soon finds itself threatened by a new regime.
Luke is in the early stages of training his apprentice and Han and Leia's children have begun study of their own… but how can a Jedi Master and a handful of students even begin to be a match for the Mandalorians? the only chance the galaxy has is for what is left of the Empire and the Rebellion to unite… years have been spent dealing with the politics of restructuring the senate and the various treaties associated with the pursuit of peace, but now it is a time for action. now it is a time to put negotiations aside and ally. both sides would be face with compromise. Han, Chewbacca, Lando, and 3PO set out to find and convince the now hermit recluse and possible true hero / anti hero of the saga, Boba Fett to help strengthen their pursuit. grizzled and disheveled, only he could provide the invaluable training and insight of his ancestral culture that the Imperial Navy needs… that is if he has not already sided with the Mandalorians.
the Sith resurface only within the shadows at this point… much as Obi Wan was able to influence from beyond the grave, Palpatine has found his way to reach out as a force ghost… perhaps his chosen apprentice will be veiled to keep us guessing, but we will know it is one of Luke's pupils. the dark side will be explored to mirror the way the light side was with Skywalker's training in the OT… Ian McDiarmid's role will very much be the yang to Alec Guinness' ying. we will see the force from a new perspective…
most importantly, the film will reveal that while the Sith were destroyed in the OT, life within the galaxy has been anything but ideal. there were no award ceremonies this time… the old players are struggling within their element and through them we gauge the fallout. Han won't be "called back" to action… he never left the action. as leaders, Leia and Lando have had the weight of the world on them… they are frayed… the film should hit home the hardship of rebuilding a Republic and be a direct continuation of the toil they have faced since the destruction of the Death Star. it was only the first step towards freedom… and perhaps the most straight forward one. to counter this, the scenes involving the Sith's return should feel somewhat spiritual and reflective… the force will once again have the mystery it did when it was originally explained by Obi Wan in the first film… it has to seduce. the audience should once again fall into it… we need to find the magic of it once again.
