Stupid question.... but was TFA in 3D at the theaters? If not... isn't the only reason Avatar is the top grossing movie because it was only available in 3D.... which cost more money? That is how it was at my theater anyway

It was released in 3D as well. It also had 6 years later of ticket inflation to help pad and a world full of Star Wars fans behind it.

Avatar just had James Cameron.
