Disney isn't playing the nostalgia card, they are simply recognizing what their built in audiences want to see and making good enough films (<-----and that is the defining "key role" at play here) that new and casual fans get brought on board as well.

But they are playing a nostalgia card. It's just a nostalgia card that's part of a poker hand that also includes good acting, good effects, good stories and good film-making.

Speaking on RO here, but I don't think just having a story be about the rebels vs empire constitutes nostalgia at all. It's just the setting of that time and therefore everything visual flows from that. Not every World War II is a nostalgic piece about that time and trying to make you think of some other movie success. It's literally just a time period, that's what the rebel/empire is, a time period in the SW universe. And obviously the one we know best, so therefore the predominant part of what SW really is.

If you don't like "nostalgia" here's another word for you: "familiarity".

Edwards himself said that whenever he thought the movie mightn't work, he just looked across at the Stormtroopers, X-wings and AT-ATs.

PT's just as full of "familiar" elements based on nostalgia: from the troopers to the jedi to the sith to the stardestroyers to the speeder bikes, Darth, 3PO, R2, Chewbacca, Yoda, on and on and on and on...

And the other director Gilroy waiting to come over and rip up his storyboards and start again...

JJ was right about making a film for the fake fans, cause not one SW geek I know liked the film. So go to Hot Topic and get your dumb OG SW shirt and wear it feeling cool.

Maybe if the new heroes were better. Rey is a walking "Mystery Box". I'm only interested in her past and who her parents are, if she's a Skywalker. I don't really care about her as a character.

Finn being a Stormtrooper was pointless beyond moving the plot forward. Could have done something interesting with that. Don't care what comes next for him.

The only new character I actually liked was Emo Ben. I'm curious about his past, what led him to fall, and where his character goes in the future.

Before TFA came out I was mostly interested in what Luke was up to, who the Knights of Ren are, if Rey is a Skywalker/Solo.

I'm only looking forward to 'The Last Jedi' because Luke will have a larger role and that Rian Johnson directed it. Hope he can tidy up the mess JJ made.

Big problem for TFA was not introducing its own cadre of interesting characters. Too much reliance on the old guard. Now the only real curiosity is old Luke.

Like Sachiel said, Finn is pointless and uninteresting in the way they chose to develop him (and he's the only one with a good backstory). Rey might be interesting, who knows? To me, she's just the stand-in "Luke" character. Maz is such a repetitive Yoda that she's uninteresting. And Poe... well, underused to say the least, but he's no Han Solo, so I don't really care if he shows up either.

Other than Luke, there's really nothing pulling me into this new one.

They desperately need some new and interesting characters.

I guess my point is I only want to know if she's a Skywalker. :lol I don't find her to be compelling beyond that.
