Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I mean ****, I would honestly take Brett Ratner or Michael Bay over George Lucas at this point.

I would take Uwe Boll over George Lucas. I would take TOM SIX over George Lucas.

The Primary problem wth Lucas (in my eyes) wasnt that he was a poor director (not saying he is great) the main problem was that he was an abysmal writer. Had he not touched the script/story in the first place, he might have turned out something decent out of the prequels.

But that is hypothetical anyway, I, Like many am relieved he has nothing to do with the next movie.

JJ Abrams And Family 'Reluctant On Move To UK To Shoot Star Wars VII' - Entertainmentwise
And if anyone is curious, this is another report from June 11. One thing is for sure, his kids will loathe Star Wars for having them move to UK and looks like they already do. Hopefully things will fall in place by later this year.

Lucasfilm responds:

"There is no truth to the rumor," a Lucasfilm rep told us. "JJ is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year."

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Well this got out of hand.

This morning when writing about the potential new writers on Star Trek 3 I dropped a small rumor I had been hearing for months, and had repeated to me again at Comic-Con this weekend - that JJ Abrams was considering or threatening to pull out of Star Wars Episode VII, most likely because of disagreeing about where to shoot and being uncomfortable with the really tight development process (Disney wants the movie out in 2015). I buried the rumor at the end of the piece because I thought it was interesting and I keep wondering if Abrams dropped out of Star Wars would he go back to Star Trek. If. But if I thought the rumor had serious substance I would have, you know, made it its own article.

That rumor took on a life of its own. It's my fault; I didn't put enough disclaimers and weaselly language around the paragraph, and I should have been more specific with what I believe, which is that at this point it's unlikely Abrams will jump ship from Star Wars. It's not a winning move for him, and if he was going to do it he would have done it this spring, when I first heard the rumor. By this afternoon the little rumor - which other journalists and even industry types took to Twitter to say they had heard as well - had turned into sites reporting that Abrams was leaving Star Wars.

For some reason Lucasfilm felt compelled to issue a statement denying this. The LA Times says:

“There is no truth to the rumor,” Lucasfilm said in a statement issued Monday. “J.J. is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year.”

OK! I buy it. They certainly wouldn't lie, and any statement to the press about a JJ Abrams property must be completely true. I feel weird that dropping this little unverified tidbit started a chain of events that led to Lucasfilm having to issue a statement, especially since they could have just ignored it all and simply gone about whatever dog and pony show they have planned for the upcoming European Star Wars Celebration, which is happening this weekend.

As for the real rumor - not that Abrams is leaving but has considered it? I still buy it. I probably should have written that whole paragraph less from a 'JJ could leave' angle and more from a 'there has been friction between JJ and Lucasfilm/Disney.' I'm looking forward to the book being written about the Bad Robot Years, because there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that will make for interesting reading one day when it can be revealed.

I guess this means I won't be getting the set visit, huh?

Christopher Nolan to direct Star Wars. Real World Force powered characters standing on ceremony and Rear World Cocaine lines for Leia to clean up.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

He's perfectly fine. Star Trek is the best Star Wars movie since Empire. The hate for Abrams is insane. His only problem, is he keeps working with ****ty writers. Himself sort of included. Super 8 is two really good movies that shouldn't have mixed together.

But whatever. Star Trek is great. Star Trek 2 is OK. But saved ONLY and I mean ONLY by Abrams direction. The writing was awful. But Abrams knows how to make a scene move. He can make an action scene exciting and interesting. But the writers he works with cannot write for ****.

Michael Arnet can. You give someone who can write, and someone who can direct, you put them together and you have gold.

The only other person who could make a Star Wars film is Brad Bird. But he's busy. So. Abrams all the way.

:exactly: We'll said, both of you. I agree 100%.

AGREED. The Prequels were EXTREMELY frustrating to watch -- it was like they decided to shoot first drafts of the scripts (which, given Lucas' apparent reluctance/inability to sit down and actually write the damned things until shooting was almost scheduled to begin), that's basically what they were. I really wish he'd written his first drafts and handed them over to a better writer.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

The problem the prequels gave the OT is they were supposed to show these two great friends who would die for each other falling out as one of them was brainwashed by an evil dictator.

What we got was a whingy teen who rebelled against everyone, who cried his eyes out when he didn't get his own way and treated his friends like *****. And we were supposed to care about him?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Apparently Ryan Gosling is being lined up to play the son of Luke Skywalker. Just a rumour at the moment.

DiCaprio was rumoured to be in talks for a role but that has since broke down.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Aren't both those actors retiring for a while?

Yes, I certainly read something about Gosling wanting to take a back seat and maybe do a little directing. I think I remember reading the same about DiCaprio as well.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Zac Efron is up for a role as well? WTF IS THIS SHYYYT!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Zac is actually becoming a fairly big actor now. He's ditched his High School Disney crap. He's mostly in indie dramas now.

:exactly: They were a complete and utter failure at their primary story purpose. They made the originals better only by way of being a total contrast in quality.

everyone wants to be in Starwars and it attracts the worst of the worst in Hellywood....but must be initiated first

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Unknowns or very respected actors is the way to go.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Since Episode 7 was announced I thought either (or both) Ryan Gosling and Micheal Fassbender would be the only famous actors I'd actually want to see in a role. Otherwise let's go with unknowns.
