Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I think it's going to be a "best of/flashback movie", like the old TV shows used to have.....

Luke, Han and Leia, C-3p0 and Chewie get locked in the Millenium Falcon's Walk in Freezer.

They radio R2-D2 for help and just sit around recalling past events, "remember when we rescued Leia from the Death Star"?..and they flashback to that, "remember the Hoth Battle"? ..so on and so until R2 rescues them...Roll Credits , the fans go nuts!!

I hated it when shows did that... That damn Riker episode when he got stung in the leg...

Why are you not working in Hollywood?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Won't happen. I hope they completely disregard the 30 years of EU writing - and they will. :yess:

and they piss off alot of fans, and then the whole thing dies.

I expect abrams, will do what he said already

" honor it, but not revere it"

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I could see them disregarding
Chewbacca's death
but the rest of the material seems pretty good, at least for a loose adaptation.

considering we've heard NOTHING of mayhew coming back for this movie, I don't think they're gonna disregaurd that.

I don't think we'll get much more than a cursory " we lost chewie" Like we did with Henry Jones Sr in indy 4, hoiwever.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

When I was a kid things were a bit more lax with spoilers before movies were released. Marvel Comics published a magazine format comic of The Empire Strikes back and Scholastic published a Return of the Jedi Storybook. Both of these were released before the films were in theaters and I read them both before seeing the films.

I enjoyed reading Empire and the end left me feeling like "holy sh-t! They must have left part of the ending off. That can't be it!"

I didn't enjoy reading Jedi. I was about halfway through reading and looking at pictures of puppets and I felt like "No f---ing way I waited three years for this??!"

I've waited ~30 years for a new, real Star Wars movie. I've set the bar high.

I wouldn't write Chewie out just because the actor's not returning. Nobody would ever tell the difference if it was a different actor, or CGI. However, he does die in the EU, so I think that will stack heavily in favor of him either dying or not showing up. It might be cool, however, to give him a heroic sendoff, and at least have his death in the film. Probably won't happen, but who knows. We have no idea what direction they'll take this thing yet.

I thought Kathleen Kennedy & Disney already said that a million times but people keep thinking they're going to film Darksaber or the Thrawn trilogy :dunno

NO, they said they're not going to adapt the novels into films.
People keep misconstruing that this means they're going to throw all of it out.

I'm of the opinion that while they will not be making the books into films ( which is all they've said so far) I doubt they will simply toss it all out. At best, I'm expecting vague little nods.

I don't expect the entire EU to make it out of this intact. but things that don't DIRECTLY conflict with the directio nthey want to go will likely make it.

Examples
Calling the new government of the Galaxy The Galactic Alliance.

Adding the Chiss Race ( Thrawn's people) to the films somewhere

Having Han and Leia married, and have had children who are now grown.

Possibly have some of those choldren already dead and gone. ( In the EU, there are three children, two of which are dead, and one Grandchild by the Now-dead son)

Have the sith Present in the Galaxy.

Luke REbuilt the Jedi Order from Obi-wan and Yoda's teachings.

Luke's family? ( EU: Luke has a dead wife, and a son whom he named after Obi-wan [Ben])

Like I said, Little, Vague stuff.
TIme has passed since the end of ROTJ. Things will have happened. LOTS of things. The Easy path of least resistance is to pick and choose from the EU, and have things that are little nods, not flat out saying that none of it happened. But instead, suggesting it MIGHT HAVE.
This allows people who Care about the EU to go on caring, and those who don't to simply go on ignoring it.

Look at avengers for example.
We don't know BLack Widow's backstory. She HAS one. it's hinted at, but they've not told us in the film what it is. If you WANT to go grab some comics and fins out, you can. If not, that's fine too.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

So is it safe to say from we are hearing (from the casting calls), that the OT characters will not have major roles? Will they be like older Spock in Star Trek?

I'm expecting Cameos at best from MOST of them, with an Obi-wan-ish/Spock-like role for Luke.

Chewy needs to be there hes part of the gang..

Chewie was also VERY OLD in the OT. While I'm not expecting them to come out and say he was hit with a moon by the Vong, I am expecting his character to be dead. Likely replaced by a new alien, or Wookie.

Possibly Lowbacca.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Considering how the EU was dismissed when writing the PT I don't know why anyone thinks it will be used to structure the ST.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

As long as they ignore this pure crapola:

Have the sith Present in the Galaxy.

Luke's family? ( EU: Luke has a dead wife, and a son whom he named after Obi-wan [Ben])

I will be ok with vague nods to one or two of the rest of what you wrote.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Curiosity peaqued.

What do you have against the re-emergence of the sith?

What do you have against ben Skywalker?

There wasn't all that much EU stuff for the PT time period so it wasn't going to screw up much.

This. there was VERY VERY little about that point in time. TBQH, I can't think of much that was messed with.

for that matter, Coruscaunt was created by Timothy Zhan for his Thrawn novels.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Reemergence of the Sith negates everything leading up to Vader tossing Palpies into an abyss. It reduces Vader and Luke's victory to a mere vanity.

Luke is essentially a monk, like Ben and Yoda. No children, thank you very much. Aside from that, it is stupidly unimaginative and over sentimental for Luke to name his kid Ben or Leia to name her son Anakin. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid and sappy sentimental crap.

Of course they named their son after the guy they joined a rebellion to fight. Don't you remember all the soldiers that came home from WWII and named their kids Adolf?

I agree. From the descriptions posted, the EU stuff sounds good enough to adapt loosely.

And I wouldn't have a problem with the OT actors being relegated to mentor roles, like Obi Wan was in SW. There's nothing wrong with them aging gracefully and with dignity. I would, however, have a problem with them running around acting like they're in their 20s and 30s, pretending they haven't aged at all.
