Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I can't wait for the onslaught of news like the casting, the title, as well as merchandise. Oh my, 1999 was insane.

Then in an instant, all that good will, anticipation, excitement, everything that was good, instantly deflated as soon I saw the words "taxation of trade routes" in the opening crawl.

Taxes introduced into a space opera, the fun was over.

Funnily enough I actually think ROTS has one of the coolest openings scrolls. "War!....Evil is everywhere...there are heroes on both sides..." etc, lots of cool and interesting bits that made me wonder what was going on off camera the way the OT scrolls used to make me feel.

Too little, too late. :(

Imagine Friday the 13th part 1 being about Mrs. Voorhees killing the counselors because she was upset that the counselors weren't paying attention to the tax code. :lol

Maybe so, but I still strongly believe that if George had announced in 1997 that he didn't have it in him to do another trilogy and would instead make one single prequel episode and then Episode III is what we got, no TPM, no Jake Lloyd, Jar Jar, or "I hate sand" speeches, that audiences would have embraced it and eaten it up as one of the OT.

Sure it had a couple awkward dialogue scenes but so did ROTJ. We just watched ROTS with the TPM/AOTC backstory firmly in our minds and it tainted everything. If you take ROTS by itself and just imagine awesome backstory when Palpatine references the death of Anakin's mother or Padme talks about their "time on Naboo" then it holds up surprisingly well.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I'm not sure I could possibly watch it like that but next time I'll try.

I find that it helps if you watch the OT (or at least ROTJ) shortly before to have "correct" SW in your mind and then watch ROTS with that point of reference.

Just remove the killings of the younglings, empire doing back flips and cackling, grevious, battle droids, padme's broken heart death, silly space battle, lava jumping, lame jedi deaths, lame treatment of royal red guards and the Nooooo, and it would be good. :rotfl

:nono

Replace the Kashyyyk troopers with guys in suits, give Anakin and Padme some decent balcony dialogue and remove the "nooooooo" and ROTS becomes a slam dunk of a SW movie. Not ESB good of course but those three things alone would have made it awesome.

I do have issues with a number of the things you mentioned but they aren't dealbreakers and don't bring the movie down like the three I mentioned IMO. And I love Grievous!

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

The wookie battle is so bad I removed it from memory.

ESB you feel the atmosphere, from the frigid whites of hoth to the deep blacks of space to the warm hues of cloud city. The characters felt so real.

ROTS I feel the digital. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

OK Jye has convinced me that it will not be possible to consider ROTS 'good' in any sense or way of viewing it.

I can actually watch TPM in isolation and find it a decent space adventure movie though. Its a waste of time as part of the broader Star Wars universe but OK on its own.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

EP3: The wookies are slaughtered on their home planet.
EP6: The Empire gets it's @ss handed by Teddy Bears.

That's why I suggested watching ROTJ before it, not to go immediately from ESB to ROTS. ROTJ has some bad 2D background with actors performing bad dialogue against a bluescreen (Han and Lando's goodbye anyone?) which segues nicely into ROTS. ;)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Remove from ROTS (in no particular order):

Oh no! there are buzz droids on the outside of my spacecraft! If only I had some kind of mystic telekinesis type power to push them off!
'Use the Ray Shields" then "Ray shields!'
Obi-wan defeated by a set of stairs
Lizard Riding
Greivous riding the buzzsaw thing from the old GI Joe
Killing Younglings
Face melt Emperor
Yoda giving up
'Noooooooo!'
Twirl part of Ai Vs. Obi lightsaber battle where they don't actually hit each other...also the rest of that battle
Oh no! I just gave birth to two children! I have nothing left to live for! *dies*

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

$10 says Jye was there for the opening of TPM, AOTC, and ROTS waiting in line for an hour (or more) with his Star Wars shirt and cheapie extendable lightsaber, cheering for the movies. :lol

I always felt that if Lando took one more step, he would have hit a wall! :lol

Worse, I slept out in the NYC streets for this garbage. :rotfl

Those sidewalks were hard, cold and unforgiving, you know, just like the PT. :rotfl
