Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

Dooku should have been in ALL THREE movies as well. He should have been on the Jedi council when they first bring Anakin in. It's amazing to me how poorly thought out in advance so many of these characters and plots seemed to be.

Now on that I would be inclined to agree. All the convoluted Syfo Dyas nonsense was just so out of the blue.

I agree. It was all but meaningless to discover he was Yoda's Padawan. I could tell how badly Lucas was trying to use that as Dooku being a badass, but without there being a whisper of history between them, it fell flat - especially from the "GASP!" reveal aspect it was intended to be. Even flatter with how easily he got spanked by Anakin in RotS (a fight which also made Obi Wan look like a total *****).

Dooku as ambassador to the grasshopper people was pretty lame too.

FF from that - to playing laser ping pong with X-box Yoda channeling a kangaroo. :lol

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (12/18/15) Discussion Thread

Nah - he was fine. :lol

He harmed the story by being an unnecessary over-complication. The OT has us all believing for 16 years that Yoda trained Obi-wan and Obi-wan trained Anakin. There was no need to muddle things with another jedi never mentioned before. Not only was there no need but it ****ed things up by delaying the beginnings of the real story (that of Anakin and Obi-wan) for an entire film. As a result there was only 1 film to develop their relationship (in which they get separated for a large part because he also had to write the love story with Padme) before things went bad. Just poor decision-making all 'round by Lucas.

And to anyone who intends to pipe in with the rationalisations that allow for Qui-Gon - I KNOW! I've heard them all before. Doesn't alter my point though - pointless, detrimental character. Albeit one that is well played by the always watchable Liam Neeson.

I don't actually disagree with you for the most part - you're right, he was an unnecessary inclusion.

That said - he owned the role, & quickly became one of my overall faves out of the whole mess of a trilogy.

But in that sense, he perfectly personified the prequels.

Exactly sirs. Just, if they were remade (including being rewritten completely) I wouldn't have him there.

Anakin and Obi-wan would meet in the first film, spend much of the film in eachother's company and actually have the friendship Alec Guinness' Obi wan talked about. The Padme romance..well the second film would be fine for that I think with a bit of foreshadowing of the Anakin/Vader situation. And the $h!t would hit the fan in the third.

I think that the aura he had about him as a Jedi was very effective, as I believe it was for McGregor. I actually think the Phantom Menace got a lot of the "feeling" of Star Wars right at some level (such as the opening scene that led to the assassination attempt on the Jedis), though the odd story and dialogue made it all a moot point after awhile. The sequels to me, feel less like Star Wars on that level, and yet still had a disconnect in that I couldn't connect to the characters, understand motivations, feel that the story was very compelling or logical, etc.

But that has nothing to do with Qui Gon Jinn. That's just Liam Neeson. I agree that Qui Gon should never have existed. Neeson could have still had a role though. Give him Sam Jackson's part (laughably miscast as an enlightened Jedi Master) and let Obi-Wan and Anakin do their thing.

Over the years as I've been able to just camp out on a steady diet of the Harmy trilogy I'm realizing that almost the entirety of the PT is either flawed fundamentally or in its execution. That wasn't the case with the OT. You had a couple moments where something was flawed in its execution (Han and Lando's awkward conversation about getting a scratch on the Falcon) or fundamentally (ewoks) but never, or hardly ever, both.

But the entire damn PT was pretty much botched in one of those areas (and often times both areas) from beginning to end. I challenge anyone here to pick a scene from the PT that was fundamentally sound in a "good for the story" type of way that was also skillfully executed.

He'd go alright actually - as long as he's a creepy alien, or smart alec rag tag galaxy hopper or something.

I'll ****ing throw kahkah at the screen if there's more wind bag senators or politician types taking over this new series. :cuss

He needs to be an intergalactic hipster.

Code:
Dooku was just in Clones because of Lord of the Rings. George Lucas was scared and intimidated by the LOTR films, just like he was about Titanic. He cast Lee because of Saruman. That's why by 2005, Dooku just got the axe in the first couple of minutes. Lucas' competition was over and he didn't know what to do.

wasn'tt that intended as forshadowing for a scene that was removed from the film?
Lando's death by not making it out of the death star alive?

George Lucas makes me sick. Just seeing his face makes me sick....:ohbfrank:..... Yet I love Star Wars so much..... when it comes to SW I feel conflicted and troubled most of the time :gah:

I hate him yet I love his creation...

Search your feelings, crows, you can't do this. I feel the conflict within you. Let go of your hate.

I don't know what was a bigger disappointment for me.

PT or TDKR.

Both ruined a good thing didn't they. :lol
