Producer: "let's see how outlandish and crazy we can get the bad guy's lightsaber!"
Yes Man: "ok, how's a cross, with four blades sticking out each end?"
Abrams: "wouldn't that totally get in the way and potentially harm the holder of said blade?"
Producer: "looks great! Baddie will be able to fight four people at once!"
Yes Man: "great idea!"
Producer: "give four people lightsabers to fight this guy!"
Abrams: "uhh..."
Producer: "And let's make the bad guy's blade shoot blaster bolts too!"
Yes Man: "wow, this will blow everyone away!"

Why not cut to the chase and give us the Lightsaber Missile? It explodes in mid-air and rains thousands of tiny lightsabers on its target?

What'd you think of Star Trek Into Darkness? That might give you a good reference point when it comes to how Abrams handles classics.

Absolutely loved both his treck flicks, thery're the only treck related things I've gotten into. So I'm not sure how the hardcore fans accepted it.

But if he raped the lore like it seems like he's thinking of doing here then that's a no-go.

I loved the first JJ Trek, but was disappointed by the second mainly because of Kahn. The movie would have been fine if Cumberbach was just another villain, but making him K and having the same things happen as in ST2 made it all ridiculous. But I really don't blame JJ for that. Including Kahn stinks of production company interference. And it almost felt like JJ wasn't too invested in the movie (probably the SW contract was happening in the down low at the time) and was just doing a job. None of his other movies have even a hint of the problems ST:ID had, so I'll let his track record speak for him. He did do a hell of a job making it look great and play out in the most exciting way, so at the very least it was engrossing and entertaining.

I still trust JJ and think he'll give us a great SW movie.

I'm not a Star Trek fan but I quite liked the first his two Trek movies but I thought that the second was a turgid bore fest & I was relieved when it was finally over.

I've not seen Super 8, I've never fancied it, but I also disliked his Mission: Impossible 3 & loathed Lost so, what with Disney's involvement too, it's fair to say that my expectations for The Force Awakens couldn't be any lower than they already are. I'm somewhat bewildered by certain film critics suggesting that the new films will be better than the prequels because of Abrams track record. :huh

Seems like nearly all of his films received a stronger critical reception than the prequels did, so it's not so surprising that critics would think that IMO, even if you disagree with critics.

Yeah, that's true. So fair enough, buddy.

I did just have a quick look on metacritic & Revenge of the Sith is rated similarly in score to Into Darkness, Super 8 & Mission Impossible 3 though. It's only Menace & Clones that are rated particularly low in score.

ROTS is barely watchable if you forget it's star wars.

This has to be better then Phantom and Clones or my faith in these star wars movies are gonna plummet even more.

Abrams can get good performances out of his actors. And a lot of the cheesiness of the prequels was the dialogue. I'm confident Kasdan will have snappy dialog.
