Me to, the haters can **** off

X3 i really like what i'm seeing so far.

Originally, Abrams turned down the opportunity to direct the film, but later changed his mind after a chat with Kathleen Kennedy herself:

Undeterred, Kennedy persuaded him to helm Star Wars: The Force Awakens by asking a simple question, one with the potential to upend our core beliefs about the galaxy far, far away. “In the context of talking about story and laying out what we were thinking, I said one thing to him,” Kennedy recalls. “‘Who is Luke Skywalker?’”

Abrams, who’s 49 now but was only 11 when the original Star Wars debuted in 1977, decided he needed to know the answer, even if he had to devise it himself. “He said, ‘Oh my God, I just got the chills. I’m in,’” Kennedy says. “I mean, it really was almost that quickly.”

Abrams says his wife also helped him get over his hesitation. “You rarely get a chance to be involved in something that you would typically be an audience for. Katie, my wife, said, ‘If you want to do this and you don’t, you’re going to regret this.’ It was really about being willing to take that leap, and jump into the possibilities of what these characters are doing, and where they are.”

There were a lot of possibilities on the table when Abrams signed on, but no finalized story. Lawrence Kasdan, who had written The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, was developing a young Han Solo standalone movie, which was just recently confirmed but began development years ago. He joined with Michael Arndt, who’d won an Oscar for the script to Little Miss Sunshine, and Simon Kinberg, who wrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith and X-Men: First Class, to break down trilogy possibilities with Kennedy.

“[They] had just been hypothesizing and throwing out a bunch of what-ifs, but there was no story in place,” Abrams says. “It was, without doubt, a formidable assignment. There were so many options and so many paths that could be taken. Even when we were in debate — and sometimes it was frustrating and heated — it was always thrilling, because it seemed almost everywhere you looked there was something potentially extraordinary, which felt very much like the DNA of Star Wars itself.”

With Abrams on board, this story team began asking questions. They knew they had Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher already committed — so that gave them Luke, Princess Leia, and Han Solo to play with. “My guess is that any question that anyone would be having was among the endless questions we were asking at the very beginning,” Abrams says.

On Finn and Rey:

Is there a piece of information that’s being held back there about their names — perhaps because their last names are ones we may already know?

Abrams isn’t ready to reveal their full identities, but did confirm that this theory was getting warm. “I will only say about that that it is completely intentional that their last names aren’t public record,” he says.

Thought this was pretty funny. Lucas drew his names from literature and ancient meanings.
JJ from his assistant and his child's teddy.

Says a lot really. :lol

Rey means King. I think Rey will be the next Chancellor.

Finn is similar to an old Irish warrior similar to Robin Hood. Takes from the rich gives to the poor. I have not read many spoilers, but if he is part of the first order and turns I would imagine he takes from the First Order (rich) and gives secret/supplies/info to the poor (what ever the new rebels are called)

Ren means ruler

Poe is a name JJ pulled out of his ***, even then, I am reaching with all these, so he probably pulled them all out of his *** or his alphabet soup spelled Poe, Kylo and Rey.

Being an Irishman, I must point out that it's Fionn, pronounced F-yun. Nothing to do with the name Finn at all.
Fionn actually means white, bright, fair, blond... so not sure that was a particular reference here with Boyega.. :lol and he was famous for being a super intelligent and ferocious warrior rather than a Robin Hood type. As he had eaten a magical Salmon of Knowledge as a child.
:lol

I think JJ just pulled them out of his arse personally. I actually don't have a problem with them at all, think they are fun.
But very un-Lucas in many ways. That is still my only real concern for these movies, love or hate Lucas, he knew what felt like Star Wars, because it came from his mind and tastes.

"Ren" means clean in Norwegian, so perhaps they are a cult of OCD hygienist cleaners?

Maybe he meant claims of "unoriginality".

But yes, Disney went so far as to say creators would be encouraged to draw on the EU for inspiration.

More in the way of the writer's prestige and pride than litigation, rather than just copy the character straight down to his/her underwear they have merged aspects of Jacen Solo with aspects of Starkiller but at the same time trying to keep it fresh and feeling new.

Ren left home young (like his grandfather) but was it of his own decision or was he kidnapped by Snoke (borrowing from Starkiller)? Seems to be very obsessed with his grandfather, clever enough to build his own lightsaber and is driven by hate, anger and jealousy. All in all it sounds like he's going to be a good villain who'll eventually find redemption.

Ah, my mistake. I am rusty on what little of Irish mythology/history I know. That dude has a pretty funny name like McCool or something if I remember correctly?

I agree about Lucas, he knows Star Wars.

I don't mind the names, but having some sort of symbolism behind them adds a little to each for me.

yeah me too.

Actually the Irish character is called Fionn mac Cumhaill, which has rather hilariously been turned into Finn Mac Cool by the US, or so i've just read on Wiki. :lol

Most of the first names in ANH are common in various parts of the world. Owen, Luke, Ben and Leia are not uncommon in the UK and US. Han isn't uncommon for the Far East either.

They became quite common in UK and other parts of the world after 1977 I guess ;)
