None of this Force Awakens stuff is doing anything for me. I don't get it.

The little beepy boopy rolling baby droid, foreign feeling characters and locations that looked like they were ripped from those ludicrous Star Wars fan films I'd see playing on VHS at conventions during the 90s/early 2000s, Michonne from Walkind Dead doing a voice over about . . . hope? :lol But hey, people are eating this stuff up. Good for Disney and the box office.

I somewhat agree with you- how these previews are marginally better than the TPM previews is beyond me- and what a disaster that proved.
I'm hoping for a great film but too many folks already got this waaaayy too high in their expectations.
I think Rogue one might be a better film..

I think it looks spectacular and light years ahead in quality compared to the PT and it might even equal the OT in quality.

SW with energy.

I get a huge Frodo/Galadriel vibe from Rey/MysticalMysteryVoice.

This is more LOTR than Hobbit.

Party poopers......enjoy they ride, the little things etc.. :rotfl I prefer to think the cup is half full versus the opposite, negative approach of half empty. I'll have fun with it and it sucks who cares. It's a film...

By the way, how's work? :horror

So, what exactly is part of the new canon?

The movies, The Clone Wars, comics and books from 2015 onwards plus a couple from last year (eg Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir).

Video games etc would be on a case-by-case basis, but anything that obviously messes with continuity would be non-canon.

I'm cautiously confident, but yes, it's hard to tell how much of my response to the trailers is genuine awe vs. nostalgia.

I showed it to my 7th and 8th grade classes this morning and their jaws dropped at the scene with Rey and Kylo's saber. They loved it.

wish I had a teacher like you when I was in 7th grade. :lol

I love what I've seen so far from TFA.
I have realistic expectations, but I just want to enjoy the whole celebrate SW again. That's what everybody should be doing DeFabio. :lol

The film will almost certainly be entertaining. Probably good, maybe excellent.

It won't get anywhere near the OT because:

1. It's 2015
2. We're (mostly?) adults

I think it's obviously premature to hype it up as this incredible film because we have no real way of knowing.

Equally inexplicable to me, are the dozens of comments ripping the film apart based on...trailers, posters and action figures.

That makes no sense. But whatever works for you, I guess.

I will say that at the moment I'm almost more excited for Rogue One, because:

1. OT Stormtroopers
2. OT aesthetic on a big, contemporary budget.

But again; we have no way of knowing until we sit down and watch a movie.

I agree 90% with your post. I'm actually not sure about Rogue One. Love the idea of it, but I think it's being made on a fraction of the money TFA cost.
That's what they are doing with the spin offs I think. I thought the first stills released looked like TV miniseries rather than SW? I think that's why Edwards got the gig. Make something look expensive on a smaller scaled budget.

Entirely possible; but of course -- big budget doesn't = great. So we could be in for a pleasant surprise...or not.

And in the end that's the only thing that matters. Not a bunch of 30 and up geezers trying to recap their youth because it ain't never going to happen even when you think it is indeed happening. For example, TDK made me feel 5, but it doesn't even come close to how SW made me feel when I was 5.

The prequels. I was 27 years old when TPM came out and I had a good enough time with it. The kids loved it though. It wasn't until they grew up (and started reading the internet?) some began to realize it wasn't that great but hey, it did it for them when the world was still full of wonder and that is all that matters.

The wide eyes and open mouth of my astonished 7 year old daughter is all I will need for this to be a homerun. I tend to be much more forgiving of films when I see my little girl enthralled by them.

Has anyone checked out the Japanese trailer for TFA

I like the scene with the tie fighters with the Suns in the background

Agreed, being able to see the excitement in my boys faces when they see it on the big screen for the first time is all I need. Sure I'll be disappointed if it sucks, but won't matter as long as they enjoy th experience

I put the new trailer in front of every movie we have playing today. Kids and adults are loving it. I am trying to temper my expectations....but it's really difficult when the movie looks this good! I love Luke disappearing and the Force fading into a legend that some say does not exist. I love that Han is carrying the torch saying it's real. I am truly trying to not get too excited, but I am loving everything so far I have seen. Now if only I could hibernate for 5 weeks.

The box office predictions for the opening weekend for this are varied from pessimistic low balling ($125 mil) to bordering on outlandish ($600 mil), but most seem to think this will rest on the all time charts between Titanic and Avatar. It would be kind of cool to have Star Wars number 1 again, not that it really means anything.

I don't think it's going to beat Titanic or Avatar. The Phantom Menace couldn't do it, and that film was the first new SW movie in 16 years. Then again, Jurassic World found a huge audience...for some reason, so I guess anything is possible.
